After failing to sell the American public on a full-scale invasion of Syria, President Obama let the matter drop, briefly at least. Now, officials are mulling ways to escalate their military involvement in the nation again.
Earlier in the week, the talk was of dramatic escalations of arms to rebel factions and possibly the establishment of a no-fly zone. Now, the talks are also said to include the possibility of “limited” US strikes.
The theory is that such strikes would be palatable to the American public, especially if they focused on al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Officials are said to be exploring the “risks” of such a strike sucking the US military into deeper involvement in the war.
Which of course is likely the whole idea. The administration was so determined to invade in the past they argued that American public opposition was irrelevant, and after finally relenting in the face of such overwhelming opposition, many in the administration would like nothing more than to backdoor America into the war after all.
The U.S. has caused, facilitated or incited enough killing and destruction in Syria. It should just get the hell out and stop. Let the Syrian people decide their own future, and in the meantime stop trying to delegitimize the elected government of Syria. Just lease that country and its people alone.
No money, but always money for wars! Something is dreadfully wrong.
The administration is already using the backdoor by supporting and arming the so- called "moderate rebels," and elements of al-Qaeda. Its just a matter of time before they cook up some elaborate story and walk through the front door.
If the strikes are 'aimed' at Al Qaeda, why is the administration still fighting Assad?
And how 'palatable to Americans' would the strikes be without any UN sanction?
The Russians won't buy war of aggression on Syria, no matter how limited it's cracked-up to be.
With or without a UN sanction, it makes no difference – they are both unpalatable to the American people. The American people understand (well, some do) that any UN sanctions are basically what the US/EU has been able to cram down the UN throat. It's time the American people realize that the function of the UN is no longer "peace" but WAR under the disguise of peace-keeping. The UN has out-lived its usefulness, if it ever was.
Some day I might get a rational explanation why America, a mass murdering and vile creature ruled over by a tyrant, feels that it has the right to insinuate itself into other countries and carry out their ubiquitous destruction and mass murder on the people of those unfortunate nations. For my own satisfaction, I am convinced that it is the malevolent Zionist entity that is the cause of all wars. Am I being too expansive in my assessment? I don't think so!
America, get your stinking nose out of other countries business and internal affairs!
Obama is hardly a tyrant. Tyrants are usually strong willed and with a firm control of the people – or they are no longer in charge. Obama is weak and constantly pulled this way and that by people with contrary agendas. I'm convinced that the MICC (military/industrial/congressional complex) has cajoled him into much of the failed foreign relations. He's more afraid of displeasing his generals and the Congress than he is the American people.
Tyrant? Not even close. But I do agree with the rest of your comment, if that matters.
With Ukraine in flames on Putin's doorstep, Obama feels emboldened to revive military action thinking the Bear will be too preoccupied to react.
Of course, if this calculation is wrong, we could be in a nuclear confrontation over Ukraine and Syria. Way to go Barack.

Sadly – prior to our 'involvement' in Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and Afghanistan – Christians were NOT being persecuted and killed as they are now.
"Limited strikes" is what was rejected before. We were told it would be just cruise missiles from a group of destroyers.
The American people objected, by an overwhelming percentage that turned Congress, because that would have been just the first step.
Now we are back to the same thing. They'll just keep suggesting it until they can get it past us. They want war in Syria, as a step to war on Iran. They won't stop.
The problem is we didn't prosecute these guys for what they did in Iraq. They just keep doing it, because they keep getting away with it. They need to go to jail.
