With the decision on the long-promised July 2011 dradown likely just weeks away, the Pentagon is pushing not only to keep this to a bare minimum, but to ensure that the most recent escalation of the war continues through the fall of next year.
The delay was reported to be extremely politically convenient for the Obama Administration, as it would allow the president to time a withdrawal for immediately before his 2012 reelection bid. The Pentagon insisted this was not a consideration in their recommendation.
And indeed, the plan is more about delaying the drawdown than anything else. Several drawdown dates have slipped over the past few months and officials are already openly talking about keeping troops in Afghanistan well beyond the end of 2014, supposed the current “end” of the war.
This would mean setting “Fall 2012” as the end of the surge doesn’t mean it will actually happen then, it rather ensures that it won’t happen before then. In the year and a half between now and then, plenty of excuses to keep it going even longer are bound to come up, particularly in the endlessly war-torn Afghanistan.
Once again no US combat death reports from the major media or AntiWar or Democracy Now about the near continuous flow of combat death reports within Afghanistan as reported at the DOD website. Amazingly each and every occasional Iraq casualty is dutifully reported by the Corporate media, by AntiWar, by DemocracyNow, but for some reason the steady stream of body bags from Afghanistan is not a news story. At least six US soldiers have died in Helmand province within the first sixteen days of June, 2011. Helmand is where the US regularly boasts about important gains. Four US soldiers have been reported killed in three separate incidents in the last three days including two soldiers in
Helmand. The number one international news story concerning the United States is routinely blocked by major media. We know why corporate media stuffs these important figures. Why does AntiWar?
If you check pressTV.com, an Iranian news source, they list each and every single casualty as they happen.
Looks like a rough average of 25 to 30 per month for the Obama Administration with more recent months being deadlier.
Do any of our generals or admirals have any brains? – are they all rear end kissing politicians with NO regard for the troops?
Afghanistan has always been and will always be – the graveyard of soldiers and of empires – there is NO winning a war in Afghanistan – whatever 'winning' is suppose to be for the US/
Oops – I forgot – it is building the gas pipeline through that country by Big Oil.
Hey, why stop on 2012? Keep on going till the pipe is completed.
They keep making dates with no intention of withdraw is to calm the public.I agree its about a oil pipline but much more also. They want Iran Pakistan and than thats if they can win witch is unlikely just look at Afganistan and Iraq. But if they did try Russia and China now tyhe real end game is them so you think they will let that happen. My bet is as soon as Pakistan or expecially Iran is attacked Russia and China will jion the fight against the US.These are illegal and immoral wars and also imosible to win.The US could never win a war with China expecially with Russias and the others named helping. In the end it will go nucular and no won will win .But you can bet the people that started the wars will be underground hidding. The American military needs to realize and I think they arew starting to that there government could care less about them.
