According to a report from CNN, the US military is preparing for classified war games it will hold this summer. While the enemies will have fictional names, the exercise will simulate a global conflict with China and Russia.
Pentagon officials told CNN that the war games will be headed by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Miley. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will be briefed as the exercises play out.
The scenarios that could be simulated in the war games include major cyberattacks, a Russian advance in the Baltics, confrontation in the Arctic with Russia, incidents with China in the South China Sea, and a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
The Biden administration is currently reviewing its military policies, including a Pentagon review of US posture in Asia, part of an overall review of the military’s China policy. The results of the war games could have an impact on troop numbers around the world and could be a factor in making decisions on military budgets.
Anonymous officials speaking to CNN hinted that the results of this summer’s war games will not look good for the US, which means they will be used to justify more military spending. One former US Defense official told CNN that in previous war games that simulated conflict with Russia and China, “We found the Blue Team, the US and allies, kept losing.”
US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) has its hand out for an additional $27 billion in funding between 2022 and 2027. Included in INDOPACOM’s wishlist is a plan for a network of long-range missiles in Asia and a missile-defense system for the US base in Guam.
The outgoing head of INDOPACOM, Adm. Phillip Davidson, has been hyping the threat of China to secure this funding. His replacement, Adm. John Aquilino, is following the same script and told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is “much closer to us than most think.”
Besides Asia, the US military is looking to expand its presence in the Arctic, the Baltics, and the Black Sea.
No need to war game really.
Russia would crush any invasion from NATO in Europe.
Russia and China combined would stomp the US military in Asia.
Not further budget increases would change that outcome one bit as the Pentagon already sucks US taxpayers dry and cannot win anywhere against anyone.
Poor US. Coups being overturned, regime changes not going through and trade wars lost.
I do hope the US tries something silly with Taiwan though. Funny to watch Chinese military effortlessly destroy whatever the US sends over there.
Once ICBM’s and SLBM’s are launched , ground and other forces met nothing, everyone will be dead.
The USA is messing up quite consistently with all those failed wars. Still, I don’t think there’s much China can do against Taiwan in non nuclear terms. Geography is quite strongly against them – landing from the sea has always been difficult.
You are correct:
That’s a very clear & comprehensive explanation, thanks!
“a Russian advance in the Baltics, confrontation in the Arctic with Russia, incidents with China in the South China Sea, and a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.”
You’d think even pretending to go to war with China or Russia would involve an actual threat to our homeland.
Every senario is framed to make it sound like China or Russia are the bad guys, but all of them actually still involve the USA sticking it’s nose into other countries business.
A study would show that our army needs to be ten times larger to even consider fighting both these nations.
It’s large enough to defend America against both Russia and China. The problem the asymmetry – they’re setting the standard on absurdly difficult terms – fighting Russia and China on their own turf. It’s just not possible, not with 10x the resources.
Sadly for the American people, there is no military technology that can protect the USA from advanced hypersonic missiles.
It’s not the hypersonic missiles that are the problem. It’s the politicians who would put their people in the way of those missiles.
Armies will not be fighting it, missiles will. Not having any missile defense to speak off — we at the disadvantage. Having our navy in far away forward positions, they are vulnerable. Sub-drones cannot be defended from.
Why are they playing these games when we know exactly the score? I assume there is just one purpose (besides bigger budgets) — squeeze allies cum vassals into spending more, and forcing them to take bigger risks by provoking Russia and China.
For as long as money is to be made, and the sheep is only too happy to rock-n-roll to the slaughter, why stop? When the show starts, they will be watching it from the Caribbean.
i got an idea. Why dont we try to grow up and act like adults with our neighbors instead of socialpathic gangs in a city neighborhood? Seriously. No wonder why advanced civilizations dont come here, would you?
Are they oblivious? How many mass shootings in the usa of late? It feeds on itself.
A “global conflict” with Russia and China, eh? How does one wargame thermonuclear annihilation of mankind?
There is no “winning” and “losing” of such a war, unless one is some kind of Dr. Strangelove or Buck Turgidson.

“We found the Blue Team, the US and allies, kept losing”
Still not learned the first thing about modern warfare? Everybody loses.
Generals are always “fighting the last war”. The war for the future is against the global warming enemy. Fortunately Russia and China are smart enough to see this, so, as always, the US will have to be the aggressor here.
Global warming isn’t a war. It’s a matter of gradually adjusting economy and society to a changing world.
The science says that “gradually” is delusional. The house is on fire around us and it suggests we put it out with a glass at a time from the tap.
I disagree. “The house is on fire” has a direct scientific meaning that definitely does not apply to the globe generally. The crust of the earth is not catching fire, that is not an accurate description of the global warming phenomenon. Average temperatures are estimated to rise by a few degrees over the next century. Temperatures are very unresponsive to short term measures, and local measures have a very small impact compared with globally adopted ones. Therefore it is logical to coordinate action globally and implement changes over a period of decades, maybe half a century.
It seems to me that there is a groundswell in Europe that resents the presence of foreign military forces on European soil. Many people would like to get the monkey off their back along with the target that comes with it.
