The US military is attacking Syria tonight, after talking up the idea of unilateral military intervention throughout the day. Preliminary reports are that more than 60 Tomahawk missiles have been fired against various targets inside Syria.
Russian deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov warned earlier in the day of “negative consequences” if the US followed through on its threats to attack, and now that they have, the big issue is the potential fallout if any Russian military casualties are caused in the US strikes.
President Trump’s campaign stance, moving away from the US trying to impose regime change on Syria, appears to have been totally abandoned in recent days, and earlier today he informed some members of Congress that he was considering a military attack on Syria.
The shift in Trump Administration policy is publicly being justified by a bombing attack in northwest Syria Tuesday, allegedly a chemical weapons attack. President Trump insists Syria has “crossed many lines,” and is insisting that his position on Syria has changed, adding that “I now have responsibility when it comes to Syria.”
US, British, and French diplomats were pushing for UN action against Syria now, though a Russian veto at the Security Council is assured, with Russian officials saying the resolution is based on “fake information.”
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley insisted the UN has “consistently” failed to act against Syria, and warned that states would as a result be compelled to act unilaterally without UN authorization. Haley added that Syria’s “illegitimate government” was committing “untold atrocities.”
All of this sounds remarkably familiar to the statements by US officials when the Obama Administration was planning to attack Syria, and while it’s not clear President Trump is willing to risk war with Russia by launching such an operation, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s warning that Russia needs to reconsider its continued support for Syria, suggesting that at the very least the administration is fine with continuing to raise tensions with Russia over the matter.
The gas attack incident, however, still has a lot of questions, with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons still just starting to probe the incident, and is well short of assigning responsibility. US officials, along with British and French officials, immediately had a complete narrative fitting with their interest in moving against Syria, and are refusing to consider any possibility that runs counter to that, including Russia’s suggestion that a conventional air strike had caused a leak in a rebel chemical cache.
The Pentagon claimed they’d detected the bombs on radar and confirmed they were from a Syrian warplane. Of course, because chemical and conventional bombs don’t show up differently on a radar, this still does not discredit Russia’s version of events.
The shift in US policy, however, really began before the alleged gas attack even took place, as in the days ahead of it, officials were again demanding Assad’s ouster, and rebel officials were reporting that the previously halted CIA arms shipments had been resumed recently. This is just serving as a justification for being more public with it, and hyping a war of regime change.
Obviously, all of the same problems with the US moving against Syria militarily, which Trump pointed out in presidential debates, are still problems, and that may ultimately deter an American attack. Either way, the Trump Administration is looking to rebrand their official stance as a hostile one, and one which is likely to please other NATO members, who see it as a chance to forestall any normalization of US-Russia ties.
Boy were we ever fooled by this con man
Ah no, we weren’t.
If you may have been fooled it is time for some introspection.
You are so right.
Sure glad I didn’t vote for warmonger Hillary (sarcasm)
Justin Raimondo, howbow dah?
Syria was the end-game of A Clean Break.
The Zionist swine have prevailed.
No, not the Zionists, the US is starting to prevail on their goal of war with Syria and then Iran. Supporting poor little Israel can by sympathized with. US aggression throughout the world can’t be excused.
Well, unless they stage a gas attack by Assad, then nearly all Americans buy into another war.
Thanks Raimondo for being on the wrong side. And thanks for killing a big part of the credibility this site used to have!
But the endgame is the US support of Israel, that pissant country,
Notice the incredible hypocrisy of Netanyahu with his condemning of anyone who would kill innocent children!!!
Israel is no more than an excuse for the US presense in the ME that’s all about it’s oil resources.
Poor little Israel. You have to be kidding.
Of course I was. But N.Korea really is the poor little country that is at great risk of having millions of it’s people slaughtered under US bombs.
Well, at least until they get their nuclear deterrent and the means of delivering a few across the Pacific. Then they become China’s version of poor little Israel. The smart money is on N.Korea making it there but in good time as China is measuring the progress very closely.
Oh, and nobody is going to dick around with N.Korea unless China says so.
“Thanks Raimondo for being on the wrong side….blah..blah blah..” WTF!!
Oh I see its Don the troll framing things as if there was a right side for US to support, but declines to name it.
Yaa Don, Trump is a dissapointment.. with Hillary’s policy now his guide… It sure looks like it’s going to be a long four years judging from this complete reversal in the first 100 days..
Yeah, there’s no doubt in your mind at least that Hillary is Trump’s guide. I’m almost at the point of guessing that your choice for president will be the cause of the world not making it through 4 years. If he fu–s with Russia, you and your worthless ilk will be slobbering all over Hillary to come to your rescue.
Sigh!! The Syrians aren’t worth the cost of the missiles needed to blow them to hell.
You mean the US isn’t worth the nuclear warheads to bring about the long awaited second coming.
Pending.
Donald Trump is… “not a Christian” – Pope Francis 2/18/16.
Neither is Francis. Well, Catholic anyway.
Can we put an APB out on Raimondo??? It’s omelet time!!!
Be careful of what you say.
Why, because Trump has shown himself to be a slick-willy con-man? He’s all over the fucking place on foreign policy. Many were warned and they did not take heed. We must now hope that actionable intelligence was sufficient to not take out anything or anyone Russian. An administration I wouldn’t trust with a potato gun is now charged with making smart decisions on Syria. Air strikes alone are not going to solve this problem.

The President must get Congressional approval before
attacking Syria-big mistake if he does not!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August
30, 2013
And furthermore…I wouldn’t trust anything that spewed forth from a pathological, serial liar, which Trump has demonstrably shown himself to be MANY times already…and many more times to come…
What will we get for bombing Syria besides more debt and a possible long term conflict? Obama needs Congressional approval.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2013
I’m warning you for your own good. It’s not hard to translate what you said into you promoting assassination.
We don’t do that here on this site.
Trump is a fraud just like all the others. And, if big mouth Maxine Waters wants to find justification to impeach this fraud, this is it. Trump unilaterally and illegally launched an attack on Syria without any congressional declared war let alone UN resolution. Trump is now an official war criminal.
Trump stands alone. Enough of the damage control in favour of Trump. It’s not going to change the fact that you fuc-ing warmongering pigs got it wrong on him.
Moderators …. do we have to constantly allow profanity and this trash-mouths constant attacks?
Pigs that try to silence others who don’t agree with them. Their own worst enemies.
Go back to Canada.
Who’s this “we?”
Fortunately for Don, foul-mouthed idiocy is not against the rules at this site.
comrade said it was o.k.
Discus has a feature called block user. Pull up Don’s profile, click the three dots and choose Block User and you will no longer need to read his words. This morning is likely my last time reading his comments.
If we live until tomorrow, which we likely will at least, how will Raimondo spin this in Trump’s favour.
It’s got to be that the neocons, whatever, forced Trump to do it.
Or will it be something so fu–ing sick that he’ll try to say that Syria was actually responsible for the gas attack?
Oh wait, Trump is right now stumbling through the speech that he’s been told to give on this. He seems to have got all the war talking points right so far!
I refuse to watch that a**hole.
This is hugely popular and finally, the leftist media are saying some good things about Trump.
Trump truly is making America great again! Americans are coming together like never before!
Making America great again with military means has nothing to do with it. Right?
What now? This is great betray by Trump to those who voted for him. Sad and infuriating.
Only stupid people would have been surprised of course. Probably a little less than half of us on this site expected to to come soon, if not that soon! The evil orange pig hasn’t even been president for 100 days yet!
Neither you nor I can control the actions of Donald Trump. I too am quite disappointed.
So it’s happened and now it’s time to look ahead to what will happen next:
First of all, Russia’s reaction will be gauged. They’re all predicting that Russia will step aside right now.
And so, if there’s no big response in kind from Russia and/or China then the next step for the US is to stage another gas attack to blame on Assad.
This is not a one-off US attack but Russia and China are standing in the way of another US war so there needs to be some caution shown. If Russia reacts strongly, which is entirely likely, then all bets are off.
The number of Russians killed will be important for how Russia reacts too, and the smart thing for Putin to do is to claim quite a few of theirs killed.
On thing is pretty well for sure and that’s that there is very little chance of the truth getting through that Syria made no gas attack.
Anyway, Raimondo is sure to put an original spin on it soon.
Right now, the US media seems to be celebrating the fact that they have got away with it so far without a Russian response.
Russia sending in it’s only warship back to Syrian borders…If you’re in Syria whose protecting your borders while NATO forces are building missile defense shields and super sonic laser guided nukes pointed at you from Germany.Don’t forget about NATO Putin you had 8 years of weakness under Obama now you’ve met you’re match.Tread carefully make calculated moves you know you’re money you’re influence and your military can only take you so far.You agreed to take Assad’s chemical weapons out of Syria you didn’t…Sick it up….Or face the wrath off-the-wall FREE world
suck it up or face the wrath of the free world…
Ah, remember this as the birthday of the Trump-Al Qaida alliance.
Al-Qaida again stages a false-flag chem weapon attack. Obama/Kerry fell for it, and now Trump/Tillerson have too. Only Obama tried to somewhat acknowledge the constitution, while Trump just attacked another country’s military that was in no way threatening or attacking America’s military and did so with no debate and without any congressional approval. Although I’m sure the Members of the Knesset in DC would have approved if asked.
And the happiest people are ….. ISIS. Trump just attacked the main military force that’s been battling ISIS. And did so with a push from Al Qaida.
Thus, the birth of the Trump-Al Qaida alliance, and the cheering you here is the fanatics from ISIS.
At this point, I don’t care if they impeach him. Pence is bad, but we just saw that Trump is just as bad as Hillary would have been as well.
Looks like the swamp just drained the Oval Office!
My bad. Voted for the SOB. Just as bad as Hillary or worse.
What makes you think vote was ever counted? Doesn’t matter anyway. The masters decide who their next puppet will be and which script will be read. So relax, you had no part in this mess.
It takes us weeks to investigate a blown up Mosque with USA bomb fragments at the scene. Yet somehow, someway we came to the conclusion Assad was responsible for the chemical attacks within hours. And then the emperor, the Donald, decides to send in some cruise missiles so we can “stop the carnage”. I guess the non interventionist decided the way to stop carnage was with more carnage.
That way you can avoid the debate about it completely.
I am sure you noticed also the “White Helmets” with NO GLOVES or other protection, but still with the white helmets and tweets, managed to get the news out very quickly.
We voted for Trump and got Hillary’s foreign policy. WW3 possibly was started on the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into WW1. The globalists hve won. There is no hope. He was either blackmailed into this or he was a liar to begin with.
Raimondo must be pleased. His man has finally come through.
Very good.
Way to go Trump; Assad is as big of a terrorist as anyone and the pansy russians and assad don’t fight ISIS to begin with. The russians and ASSad can only gas little babies, thanks for showing everyone good rules.
Tommy is a terrorist supporter
He is no christian
but a warmonger
babbling,bubbling
about what he knows naught…
In fact, Tom is likely a very good Christian.
Way to go Tom! You represent the majority of your country. And you serve a real definite purpose on this site.
Aw, poor Bashar, maybe the pansy russians can wipe his eyes, these
creeps are pretty good at fighting little girls but not ISIS. Maybe the
David Pukes are all mad at Trump as well. Maybe putin looking for little boys will help.
If any Russian troops were killed in the attack, hopefully Joint Base Andrews and a few others will get the same treatment, tit for tat.
My country’s administration has completely lost it’s mind,
Scott Adams may persuade you to believe otherwise.

The Wench of Babylon doesn’t want to stand in the shadow and presses to the fore:
“Hillary Clinton calls for U.S. to bomb Syrian air fields”

Also, Richard Spencer of the Alt-Right declares betrayal:
Brace for interesting levels of civilian unrest at home.
Betrayal? Not really for those who suppoted Trump because their priorities didn’t include any antiwar sentiments. You were told time after time that the way Trump was intending to make America great again was with military force. This attack is only the continuation of the process he started when he became your president.
Weren’t you told about Trump changing the ‘rules of engagement’? Didn’t you choose to ignore it?
Liar & Fraudster-in-Chief Donald in office less than 3 months and has already kicked his base supporters to the curb in favor of the Washington Consensus. McCainiacs are ecstatic!
The Syrian army is claiming 6 deaths from the attack. At $1.4 million cost per Tomahawk cruise missile, that comes to $90 million for the attack, or about $15 million per casualty. Not exactly cost effective.
I thought Trump was some sort of a great businessman. Numbers don’t lie; he isn’t.
I appreciate reading the comments on this site as much as the articles because they are for the most part intelligent and respectful. So, please pardon my ignorance, but why is it so clear to some that this chemical attack was staged by the US?
John,
Good question.
Some people here seem to be heavily invested in the notion that pretty much every attack conducted by any party other than the US (or Israel) is a “false flag” secretly conducted by the US (or Israel).
To this mindset, everything the US (or Israel) has ever done, is doing now, or ever will do is wrong and evil, and therefore anyone opposed to the US (or Israel) at any time or for any reason is a saint (and anything wrong or evil done by said saint was actually secretly done by the US (or Israel)).
To these particular people, the actual evidence is of no more importance than it is to the hawks who insist that it absolutely, positively, must have been an intentional chemical attack by the Assad regime. It’s not the evidence that matters to these people, it’s controlling the narrative and being able to hold on to their beliefs.
All that said, simple “cui bono” reasoning makes it seem unlikely that it was an intentional chemical attack by Syrian regime forces. There was no way such an attack served Assad’s interests and it wouldn’t have taken a rocket scientist to figure that out in advance.
These particular people are driven, among others, by the numerous lies which the Bush administration produced for its attack on Iraq and Obama about Qaddafi. That is still a truly worrisome fact. Can one believe anything Obama claimed and now the Trump administration claims about Libya, Syria, Iraq, or Iran?
Of course the lies of Johnson and Nixon on Vietnam can fill another textbook. Plus Reagan on the little island in the Caribbean.
And JFK with the Bay of Pigs.
And McKinley with “remember the Maine”.
There are probably many more presidential lies in our history.
And that does not include the lies which these presidents as candidates uttered.
Lies produce cynicism.
It’s always important to separate those who blame the US for everything, from those who refuse to place the blame on Syria. There’s a big difference and your comments do nothing to keep that point front and center.
The thing is Thomas, we get enough defense of the US on this site and so more of it isn’t being asked for now. Maybe leaving the question unasked until the evidence comes out would be more appropriate.
And so here’s a prediction that I feel completely comfortable in making now. It will never be proven that it wasn’t done by Assad. At least not to Americans. Your comment about it not being done by Assad is just as safe!
I detect John’s purpose is more in finding his country guilt free than it was in pointing out for us that some jump to unwise conclusions. That we’ll determine for sure when he makes further comments.
“There was no way such an attack served Assad’s interests and it wouldn’t have taken a rocket scientist to figure that out in advance.” That right there is the crux, Assad’s not stupid, he’s not going to launch an attack that he knows will give the US a reason to intervene.
I am not among those who claim that the attack was staged by the US. There are currently investigators on site. That seems logical when a crime has been committed. Will they report soon?
Supreme International Crime — like the 2003 attack on Iraq — http://www.twf.org/News/Y2005/0704-SupremeCrime.pdf

I find it odd that a good number of the cruise missiles seem to have missed their targets. Some accounts suggest that more than half missed.
That just doesn’t fit the claimed accuracy of the tomahawk missile.
Could it be that the Russians detected the incoming salvos and activated their electronic jamming mid-attack?
Satellite images confirm maximum destruction and everything on that airfield pummeled to dust Russian envoy at the U.N. complaining about USA aggression worried about direct confrontation Russia just bombed a hospital in Syria to hide evidence of gas after civilians get rushed there for treatment and as of right now America contemplating grounding Assad’s Air Force no fly zones on Turkish border where USA has large Airbase and nuclear weapons on Russia’s borders…Like I said Russia can beef up Assad’s air defenses but what can they really do surrounded by so much military hardware from so many Nations Israel Saudi Arabia U.A.E.Kuwait Turkey Iraq Quatar…Good Luck
Allow me to introduce yet another hypothesis. It was known that Iranian members of the Revolutionary Guard were stationed at that airfield. There are rumors that a secret sarin lab was there too. Is it too far fetched to suggest that the RG and their supporters in Iran wanted to embarrass the currently more moderate government of Iran by helping with a sarin attack?
The basic chemistry for making sarin, which was first synthesized by IG Farben in 1936, is not complicated but the actual production needs a good chemical laboratory because the very dangerous HF gas is involved. Such a lab can be hidden in a concrete bunker. Or underground. My problem. How did they get the needed base chemicals into that facility undetected?
And let me introduce you as a lying and ignorant fool who doesn’t have the capacity to learn. Even the completely braindead should be accepting this as a US made setup for war by now.
I hope the investigation shows that the Syrian gov’t didn’t carry out the attack, wouldn’t that be the icing on the cake?
The Syrian government didn’t carry out any gas attack but you’ll never see that icing on the cake. That’s not taking into account that it can never be admitting that it was a setup. And that’s a lesson in propaganda’s power for you.
That’s true.
So all it takes is one alleged gas attack by Syria and suddenly Trump out-neocons Hillary, Obama, Bush and all the other scumbags.
Still not finished trying to make the comparison to Hillary with your psychopath corporate billionaire president?
The Russians not using their advanced SAMs was NOT tacit approval, it was avoiding tipping their hand about the capabilities of their latest missiles in order to inflict maximum damage if the US launches an all-out attack. The real question now: What are we all going to do condemn this naked aggression by the US and prevent more from happening?
Keep telling yourself that…Who’s rushing full steam ahead to Syria right now…Gotta go protect his puppet.Sad when you have to rely on Putin for protection from the world.Trump’s not Obama and is unpredictable that is scary for Russia knowing they can’t defeat America militarily and knowing a nuclear strike will end it’s existence. That’s what happens when you piss off the world. It’s a new day and Putin helped his worst nightmare get elected..Russian spy master my ass…
Make no mistake Eagle, as you talk tough, a nuclear strike on Russia ends your life too. Do you have little children? If so then consider buying the suicide injection that’s been produced just for the situation you are envisioning. It’s the only known cure for stopping unendurable radiation sickness and It’s said to be quite painless because it’s made to be easily administered to children. The adult goes last of course.
You’re always right on target with your comments. But I noted: you must have meant “…….What are we all going to do {to} condemn this naked aggression…….”
Which is a good point!
It seems the answer is ‘nothing’ because both major parties are supporting Trump’s attack on Syria. It doesn’t matter a bit that at least some of them know that Assad didn’t use chemical weapons, it only matters that they are afraid to say so.
They’re even afraid to say that there is still an investigation to be carried out by the UN. My Canadian P.M. said that to begin with but has now backed off on that opinion. He’s now sayint that he has heard evidence to say that Assad is guilty. And that’s a bloody lie of course.
What are WE ALL going to do? Leaders usually get dragged along eventually to doing the right thing by public pressure. Lets bring that to bear sooner rather than later. IDEAS?
Americans who care, don’t be lulled into thinking this is just one attack that had something to do with the use of gas on the Syrian people. In truth it has nothing to do with a gas attack that may not have even happened and even if less likely that Assad was involved.
It was a setup to justify US bombing and asserting a US military presence in Syria. The US is not going to allow Russia and China to take control of Syria, and much less Iran. And peace was coming dangerously close.
You Trump supporting as-holes have been told time after time that Trump would do this but you wanted to stick with Raimondo. Now your hopes in Trump are destroyed and Raimondo is limping away like a poisoned pup with his tail between his legs.
Maybe it’s time to pitch in and help restore the credibility of this site now. Maybe some Americans can do some good for the antiwar cause?
At least in time to oppose their country’s war in Syria which is coming soon!
It’s worth noting that Raimondo in his new piece is trying to say that the spooks made Trump do it.
Raimondo has become irrelevant.
Truth is, Raimondo’s dog ate his homework.
“Raimondo has become irrelevant.”
If he’s so irrelevant then how come you can’t seem to STFU about him for more than a few minutes at a time?
Because criticizing him for being so wrong on Trump is a good thing to do isn’t it? If you prefer that I didn’t then please say so.
It’s not that complicated: Either he’s relevant or he’s irrelevant. People who are relevant get criticized. People who are irrelevant get ignored. So make up your f–king mind already.
Calling Raimondo irrelevant could help in making him more ignored. Saying he’s relevant will just draw more attention to his nonsense. Also, it shouldn’t be all that difficult to understand that Raimondo has become irrelevant in pursuing the antiwar cause. He’s still relevant as it pertains to doing damage to that cause.
In any case Thomas, it’s the spirit of the antiwar effort that I support and I expect that you do too to some degree.
Do you wish that I stop criticizing Raimondo?
I don’t care who you criticize. I just figured I’d see if I could get some consistency out of you, since I have no way of getting thorazine to you.
Raimondo gets accused of voting for Trump in one of the comments on his piece.
And Raimondo says: “It was a vote for Trumpism – not Trump.”
Well now Thomas Knapp, ain’t that a peach!
There is only one solution to this travesty: IMPEACH TRUMP!
Trump’s attack on Syria has put that possibility further away from happening as opposed to closer. The Repubs are pretty solidly with Trump on it, as we suspected they would be and the Dems are sort of for it even as they are starting to use it against Trump in a convoluted way.
And there’s also the very strong theory that’s being floated that a good part of Trump’s motivation for doing it had a lot to do with boosting his popularity ratings.
And now you think the people would want to impeach him?
I don’t think that a US House member would suggest that unless 25% of the House was already inclined. I’d say right at most 10% might agree with such a plan. Call me a pessimist.
No, your right. But sometimes it’s fun to dream.
The non-existent chemical weapons of the Assad government (meticulously documented when the previous “red line” was crossed in 2013) have conveniently come to work again just as Trump had renounced overthrowing Assad. How can the “West”, with no investigation and no evidence, continue to fool the public with their shock and horror while their devastation of Yemen has no end?
You aren’t making yourself clear rose, even though you probably intend well. So to put it straight: The red line wasn’t crossed in 2013 and Assad’s chemical weapons don’t exist in Syria now after Obama and Putin carried out their elimination. Hoping that’s what you really meant?
In any case, Trump’s soon to be future attacks on Syria are going to put the lie to any of his supporters who continue to hang on to hope in him. Or at least pretend.
Like Raimondo suggests, somebody made Trump do it! LOL
Trump’s popularity is soaring with both major parties. And the story about Assad using gas has been repeated so many times now that there is no hope of the truth ever surfacing and being accepted.
Trump is calling for all nations of human decency to help with his war on Syria which is coming soon.
Russia and China are the wildcards this time Americans.
