With most of the political leadership in other NATO member nations lash US President-elect Donald Trump for calling the alliance “obsolete,” he doesn’t appear to be alone, with top NATO commander Gen. Denis Mercier saying he agrees that there are parts of NATO which are absolutely obsolete.
Gen. Mercier is France’s Air Force Chief of Staff as well as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, and says he believes NATO is far too focused on deploying troops abroad, and sending expeditionary forces into various countries, singling out Afghanistan in particular.
Mercier argued that NATO should revamp its anti-terror efforts to focus on helping countries develop their own long-term plans for counter-terrorism operations instead of just deploying NATO troops around the world.
The Supreme Allied Command Transformation (ACT) is meant to focus on future threats, and its express purpose is to modernize parts of NATO that are approaching obsolescence. It is not wholly surprising, then, that the commander would see significant parts of NATO that are obsolete, though the fact that he was willing to public affirm as much right now reflects a major break with the political leadership, which is desperate to present NATO as both relevant and irreplaceable.
.
Good. Trump’s courage is starting to prove contagious.
I totally agree, Rick. Trump’s courage is definitely beginning to prove contagious. The fact that Supreme Allied Commander Denis Mercier is on the same page as Trump is evidence that NATO is definitely obsolete and sorely needs to be scrapped.
NATO was established at the beginning of the Cold War to counteract the Warsaw Pact. It was never established to wage wars of aggression around the globe. It wasn’t until the Zio-neocons seized control of it that NATO’s mission changed, for the worse. Since then, NATO was no longer the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; it’s now the North Atlantic Terrorist Organization – a tool used by Israel and its chief vassal, the US, to wage aggressive wars worldwide.
What Trump must do, once he’s in office, is to pull the US out of NATO; then, that terrorist organization will fall apart and vanish. With the USSR long gone and Russia as an Orthodox Christian nation once again, there’s NO need for NATO; therefore, abolish it.
Hence this ridiculous obsession to demonize Russia. If they manage to show that Russia is the USSR, NATO suddenly regains its purpose. Of course things are quite different now, what the world needs is something akin to a Warshaw Pact II to limit the corrupt idiocy of the deranged Western establishment.
NATO is not relevant to anybody accept to the United Nations and the NWO to them it is irreplaceable and very relevant
NATO have done a good job to prevent a close cooperation between Russia and Germany in the last quarter of century – it was the reason it was created in the first place – remember “US – in, Germany – down, Russia – out”. In other words, the purpose of NATO was to keep Europe under American control and prevent any possible alliance between Russia and Germany because it would be a challenge to US elites hegemony. So it worked fine, but it pushes Russia closer to China.
Now China – Russia alliance is a reality and it is much worse for American hegemony than German – Russian alliance because: 1- It is much stronger from any view point. 2- The West excluded from it. 3- it is much more attractive for the independent countries like Iran, Vietnam, Uzbekistan because China is counterbalanced by Russia and they feel safe. 4- it ends the rule of the multinational corporations. 5- it can eventually shift the economical and political centre of the World to East Asia and the West may find itself in a weak and subordinate position.
The General makes excellent points, especially about sending too many NATO troops abroad. But let me remind you, Sir, that to Americans, ‘abroad’ means Europe, too. America is sending way too many troops to Europe.
I believe that all the good general is trying to achieve by his comment is simply to co-opt Trump’s comment to a much narrower scope, in the hope of later diffusing the whole thing.
They seem to want to prevent the entire EU massese from waking up to this revolutionary idea.
No worries people – the main stream media wil largely dismiss this sentiment as one that is vocalized by a Russian sympathizer…
The case against the obsolescence of NATO was well made in 2008:

Trump is a Putin stooge, as are most on this blog. NATO needs to be stronger than ever to oppose the resurgence of Russian imperial ambitions.
