The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement today criticizing the US extension of the Iran Sanctions Act, saying they are “disappointed” in the US move, and fear it could jeopardize the entire P5+1 nuclear deal between the international community and Iran.
The bill which extends the act became law today, without President Obama’s signature. The overwhelming majority of both houses of Congress passed the bill, presumably veto-proofing it, but Obama still didn’t want to have his signature on the matter.
Despite Iran’s warnings about the bill, and the new concerns from Russia, the extension doesn’t technically violate the P5+1 nuclear deal itself, as it imposes no new sanctions on Iran. Rather, the bill makes it more straightforward for future presidents to impose such sanctions on Iran, nominally in the case of a violation by Iran.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani argued that the lifting of the sanctions should’ve obliged the US not to leave a potential snap-back in place. He did, however, confirm that Iran will continue to comply with all of their obligations under the deal.
It doesn’t matter if Trump or Obama or Bush or Clinton are in the White House. Israel still rules Washington.
The US wanted to control actions of Iran, not make peace with Iran.
It got some actions it wanted, and then continued it war on Iran.
That is foolish, because it won’t keep what they gained. It will lead to things they don’t want. But being foolish has never stopped US policy. If anything, it seems to reinforce US policy.
Somehow being foolish feeds into “if you knew the secrets I know” and helps further the foolishness.
This bill has nothing to do with the security of our nation. It is a bill intended to punish and humiliate President Obama for having signed the nuclear agreement with Iran. The Democrats who voted for this bill were patsies for the revengeful GOP. Have they no shame?
Given the new situation with Iran the only politically correct position would have been “let’s allow this antique to expire. When Mr. Trump is president we will be open to a discussion and consideration of a revised law which must take into account all new developments since the old one became law”.
