While a lot of the focus in post-regime change Ukraine has been on neo-Nazi parties, today’s eye-opening comments come from the moderate Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR), as one of their members of parliament is calling for the nation to launch a new nuclear weapons program.
MP Pavlo Rizanenko dubbed Ukraine’s post-Soviet disarmament a “big mistake,” saying the nation thought it was getting a pledge for unconditional military aid from the United States and Britain as part of the deal.
The Budapest Memorandum had all the signatories promising to respect Ukraine’s political independence, but did not oblige any of the signatories to attack anyone else.
At its founding, Ukraine had 1,900 nuclear warheads. The last of those arms were exported in June 1996, and Ukraine is now a non-nuclear weapons signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Ukraine’s interim government is arguing that Russia’s deployment of troops to the Crimea to secure a referendum on secession violates the memorandum, though Russia has a pact with Ukraine to keep up to 25,000 troops in the Crimea.
Hitler spoken, he also wanted to have a nuclear weapon, what is scary is that they might get it.
They can forget it.
Russia will NEVER allow them to develop nukes. Putin will pull an Israel and bomb their facilities, THE BIG DIFFERENCE BEING, the threat from Ukraine will actually be real, especially when you consider they were a nuclear power under the Soviet Union and now have a government made up of Nazi's.
They were not a nuclear power. All the nuclear weapons in Ukraine at the time, were Russian weapons and they were taken back to Russia.
Hitler was informed about a nuclear capacity, is reported to have said that he wanted a 'complete destruction' , but did not adequately support its development. He had set his sight on the V-weapons. The German effort led by Heisenberg was puny compared to ours (see Hitler's scientists by John Cornwell).
Give neo-fascists like this nukes? Sure that's wise??
Confusing situation…supposedly these guys are anti-Russia, antisemitic, Ukrainian nationalists…so how is Yatsenyuk, a jew, in charge?
They will not have free and fair elections…something tells me with this these "nationalists" with their privatization goals will lose.
Yatsenyuk is a technocratic figurehead, meant to put lipstick on the fascist pig so as to make the resulting fascist and neo-Nazi stew more palatable to tender Western bourgeois sensibilities.
Great, a nuclear power right on Russia's doorstep under the control of fascists and neo-Nazis. (Svoboda currently heads the Ministry of Defense in the post-putsch regime.) What could possibly go wrong?
Has this bright light thought about what the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine would mean? Clearly not.
The ability to place nuclear missiles in Ukraine was one of the reasons for US destabilization. Expect nuclear missiles to be delivered shortly after neo-nazi / fascist rule is consolidated, and it's clear Russia won't militarily challenge the new regime. The missiles will be under NATO (US) control, served by NATO (US) missile crews. Crazy? Yes, but when has that stopped the warmongers in DC. And having supplied the neo-nazis with nukes, US hawks will return to wailing about Iran's non-existent nuclear weapons.
And, why on earth would NATO want that? They don't get their missiles from North Korea, so it isn't like they have to be close to hit anything. With a modern missile, it really doesn't matter so much if the attacking missile is in the Ukraine, Germany, UK or Nebraska.
What NATO had been trying to do is to put anti-missile defense systems close to Russia. But, that's a little different from this trip down bizzaro-world's yellow brick world.
The closer the missile the shorter the time to the target. Believe it or not, Russia also has ABM systems, so shortening the time in which Russia can respond accomplishes a great deal. By your logic nuclear armed submarines would also be unnecessary, but the US maintains a fleet of them.
Nazi's with nukes. Obama's legacy to the world.
Let's see how double standardy the US can get. Let's sit and watch as the US helps Ukrainians make nuclear weapons while denying Iranians the right to enrich uranium to medical isotope level. I think we all know that's exactly how this will play out.
