Members of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) report that they have been told by Western officials that they believe President Bashar Assad must remain in power to prevent an al-Qaeda takeover of the country.
“Some do not even seem to mind if he runs again next year,” noted one SNC member. That’s not sitting well with the SNC, but it may not matter.
Western diplomats confirmed the shift, saying that the rebels have been warned that any “transitional administration” would have to include a major presence from Alawites, and that Assad could stay as president with “diminished powers.”
If the rebels reject that plan “they will lose most of the West,” one diplomat said, reflecting the dwindling confidence in the secular rebels’ ability to accomplish anything on their own.
This appears to be only one of the possibilities the West is exploring, with both the US and Britain openly talking to Islamist rebels about backing them as the new “pro-West” rebels.
And for what?
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read in my entire life…
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read in my entire life…
I believe the "Syrian People" will decide…as was always the "goal"…not the so-called "West"….
Why has the 'issue' of Assad even "running" again in a 'fair' and 'open' "election" been 'out of the question' for certain idiots (who will remain nameless) so far? Is Assad somehow 'not allowed' to play the "democracy" game, in his own Country mind you, as Assad might actually "win" it? WTF???
Direct quote from the linked article:
"Some do not even seem to mind if he runs again next year"
Well…I never… Assad on the ballot… Letting the "Syrian People" decide for themselves, instead of Interventionist Ditz and AW.C? This is preposterous!
PS. I can assure you Obama is not telling anyone that "President Bashar Assad must remain in power"…
The propaganda is just getting down right absurd at this point…
The Assads, Father and Son, have been winning every election in Syria going back all the way to 1971.
And the only way to stop that was by killing as many Syrians as possible using outside terrorists masquerading as Syrian supporters of freedom, right Amir?
Right. The Assad Family, and their Shabiha goons, Lebanese Hezbollah terrorists, Islamic Republic Mollah Regime thugs, Shia Iraqi sectarian death squads, and Tsar Vladimir (former) KGB backers haven't killed anybody. And even if they have, they've only killed members of the CIA-MI6-Mossad-Zionist-AIPAC-Turkish-Saudi-Qatari-Jordanian-French Conspiracy, right Belphegor69? No Syrians have been massacred by the Assads now nor ever during the last 42 years of their democratic rule. The Assad Hereditary "Republic" and fascist-derived Baathists are rather cute and cuddly, isn't that right Belphegor69?
If you don't like Assad Amir, then don't vote for him . This is how "elections" work. Also, US citizens are killed all the time by "their own government"–both within the US and abroad–in the name of upholding "the rule of law" and "keeping Americans safe"–including fighting the so-called "Global War on Terror"–killing virtually the same exact people Assad is, who may or may not be actual US Citizens… This is how so-called "democracy" works Amir, welcome to "reality".
Just as a hypothetical Amir: if third party "observers", such as UN observers or a combination of so-called "Western" and "Eastern" observers, 'oversee' and monitor the upcoming "presidential elections" in Syria, will you then be 'okay' with the "Syrian people" choosing their own leadership? ,
Do you actually think this is how elections work in Syria? That the "Syrian people" have been electing Assad the Father and Assad the Son over and over and over since 1971?
Almost reminds one of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Yemen, Uzbekistan….
Except – what the?! Those are all supported by the USA! How can this be?
Let me try to think through this.
Clearly, because the USA is waging a terrorist war of aggression against Assad, it means the USA is against dictatorships.
But then, the USA supports multiple dictatorships in the Middle East and around the world.
It almost seems that the USA is not against dictatorships, but rather is against countries that are not subordinate US clients…
This is big news!!!!
Since when are Ditz and AW.C interventionists? Ditz was just reporting what he heard, not interjecting his personal opinion. You must be reading a different site than I have.
…Since some seem to be pushing the narrative that "Assad must go" with "activist" so-called "journalism"…
The flaw with this particular piece mainly lies in the premise(s). For example: first we are 'told' the so-called "West" is now saying that "Assad must stay"; then we are told Assad might be "allowed" to participate in the upcoming 2014 elections. In addition to this "information" being suspect in and of itself, it seems to conflate participation in an "election" with a mandate by the so called "West" for Assad to stay in power…it further implies that participation in an "election" will translate into an automatic "win" for Assad for whatever reason (perhaps the so-called "West" suspects this is what the "Syrian People" want?). It also completely ignores the proxy war currently being waged by the so-called "West" and it's Middle Eastern regional so-called "allies" by funding, arming, and providing other "support" to the mercenary terrorists fighting in Syria.
There are other 'issues', which I will not get into at this time other than this is part and parcel of a larger "narrative" being pushed–which I already mentioned.
While the Saudis barbarians massacrien people of all beliefs, while the Syrian people still preserving their statehood knowing that it was the western geopolical interests that brought the war upon them, who els would the west turn too for peace! The Saudis barbarians, the Wahhabis the Salafis and their affiliated groups Al-Nusra or Al-Queada, they already have tried that.
Syria constitution is based on democratic value and respect for its people, people of all belief are presented at the parliament, the system have more respect for its people then the majority of western politicians would understand what democracy is about, they are not interested in political trickery, or devious wicked ideas wanting conquer Lebanon or other country as west dose, so who els would the west-they turn too for peace but the legitimate government of Syria.
Now having said that, the idea that west is telling these barbarians "Assad needs to stay" is yet another wicked idea, Syrian rebels and the barbarians losing the war, the west knows that, the idea is wicked because the west knows that Syrian war is not nor is going to be winnable by either Saudis barbarians or the rebels. Syria is not Yugoslavia nor is Libya, although the western regimes still can taste the blood of the Yugoslavian and Libyan people, yet, Syria is not either, they need to end this war sooner rather then later, either way, before barbarians are able to establish the Saudis kind of "democratic" stat and coming after them.
The "West" has proven again that their machinations to reorder the world to match some think tank's vision of the world (revolving around the west, of course) is doomed to fail. Every time the West meddles in affairs not their own, people – and sometimes civilizations – die.
I'm not an isolationist – more an non-interventionist than not. It's time for the "west" to bring it home and let the rest of the world sort out their own problems, realizing that the "West" are responsible for most of their problems.
Has anyone checked the Doomsday Clock lately? Retribution is going to be such a beetch!
First time Western officials say something reasonable.
Israel recently announced that their preference was for Assad to remain in power given the fundamental Islamist alternative. No new found wisdom in DC, just new marching orders from Tel Aviv.
These regime-change scumbags, desperate to destroy another nation for reasons unclear, appear to have learned the errors of their ways, after Iraq and Libya.
The Brookings Institute's "Which Path to Persia"? from 2009 is the liberal interventionists' handbook, the way PNAC was the guide for nutty neocons.

"desperate to destroy another nation for reasons unclear"
The reasons are actually super clear: US policy is almost entirely dictated by representatives of private corporations. Why do corporations do what they do? For profit. Therefore (and this is also extremely well documented) why does the US government do what it does? For profit.
Also, I did a little exploration/analysis of the criminal, US Government/Dianne Feinstein/Exxon Mobil-funded aggression-against-Iran handbook, "Which Path to Persia", here: http://empireslayer.blogspot.com/2013/10/if-iran-…
And here is a political science study out of Princeton (which also references several other studies) showing that the US government ignores the vast majority, near 70 percent, of the US population, and responds to people with wealth, AKA corporate interests: http://www.princeton.edu/~bartels/economic.pdf
Oh goody. Now we can resume sending Canadian citizens like Maher Arar to Syria to be tortured on our behalf. Let the fun begin!!
Ohh well. I have news for Sunnies and Shias, according to careful study, all religions are Man made, with the help of ET,we call Angels. So Islam, Christianity
And judism all wrong, fake… wake up
Western countries perceive their interests, while the Syrian people who care about the country's governance is done in the best way possible democratic and Assad's no way people should be part of this government.
Why the West fears is by faith that the local population and have it supports. This comes from the fact that the West is not engaged in the construction of a state as the local population but do not love them.
