Israeli Officials Hope Hagel on Board With Iran War
Hagel's Past Opposition to War Could Be Turned to Israeli Advantage
After an initial reaction of shrill, almost hysterical hostility, Israeli officials are reexamining the Chuck Hagel question with the former senator’s nomination now seeming a foregone conclusion, and are hoping to turn lemons into lemonade, at least where Hagel’s past opposition to aggressive warfare is concerned.
A lot of the old concern about Hagel centered on him not being on board with invading Iran out of the blue, but Israeli officials now say they’re willing to give Hagel a chance on the matter, feeling him out to see if he might be brought on board with the war.
The change of heart centers on the notion that if Sen. Hagel can be gotten to, and convinced of the value of attacking Iran, his previous opposition would be a big chance to respin the war as even more legitimate in having brought even the doubters around.
This redefines the Hagel nomination and confirmation progress not around his past lack of hawkishness, but around how readily he can be repurposed as a “reluctant hawk” whose acquiescence can take the wind out of the sails of war opponents.

This sentence say it all " …but Israeli officials now say they’re willing to give Hagel a chance " . Yes – Read it again : our official need "chances" from a foreign government .
Does anyone need an explanation as what is wrong with this ?

Keeping in mind that Hagel is a politician and as such there is the ever-present propensity to bend with the flow (of money usually) and give up long-held beliefs and stands…given all that…Hagel strikes me (what do I know) that the Israelis are going to find Hagel unlikely to be "repurposed." Keeping in mind that as SECDEF, Hagel would be the Pentagon's mouthpiece of an Obama policy. My belief is that Hagel would decline the nomination if he was going to have to advocate for something he doesn't believe in. Of course, he is a politician and the history books have a strong allure. We'll see.

What War with Iran ? Nobody wants war with Iran , Not Israel and definately not ot the United States . To pull a bad tooth out of a patient you don't need to kill them . Israel defanged Iraq and Syria without starting a war . Iran can not be allowed to get a nuclear bomb . This is a simple tooth pulling . Whose talking about starting a war . Hagel maybe a good choice especialy for not starting a war .

I think it's a shame to the umpteenth degree, but it's a situation the US has to withstand because it doesn't have the balls to confront and tell Israel to go to hell.

Hagel is already changing and saying things that AIPAC surely loves.

it is reassuring to read that an official of the us fedgov will be given a 'chance' by a foreign power. i feel so much more secure knowing that foreigners must be satisfied with the filling of official positions. after all, we are nothing but schmucks and chumps who always pay in blood and treasure and never considered in the final deal, so why should our well being ever be considered?

I read Israel was going to use their veto power against the US for nominating Chuck Hagel, and instead gave 3 candidates to chose from. This is Israel Zionist controlling the USA to fight their perpetual wars, at our expense, with out blood and life, and our reputation. We are seen as expendable, ie, subject to use, not worth salvaging or reusing, and open to sacrifice in the interests of gaining an objective, especially a military one.
This now our life, you are a slave too Israel.
