A new analysis piece from the Associated Press takes a closer look at what’s been happening with US-Pakistani relations over the past two weeks, with officials making enormous allegations and at times even talking up the prospect of invading Pakistan. Is the US trying to scare Pakistan into acquiescence, or are they just so confused that they’re throwing conflicting statements out without a broader plan in mind?

I have to admit that even for the USG, what has been going on between the USG and the Paks is something that might come out of a Timothy Leary bad dream. This is so bizarre that this has to be orchestrated. This cannot be just a case of "stuff happens." The question is, to what end?

The whole idea is to put Pakistan in a no-win situation. If Pakistan attacks the tribal area at the behest of the US administration then there is a potential of a civil war. No one in Pakistan believes that the US has any real threats from those tribes. If, on the other hand, Pakistan refuses to attack its own tribal area the US will attack — first the tribal area and then the rest of the country. That will certainly ruin Pakistan.
