Pretending as usual that months of haranguing the Maliki government into allowing US troops to remain didn’t happen, the White House today insisted that it would “certainly consider” any “requests” by the Iraqi leadership to keep troops in the nation.
White House spokesman Jay Carney insisted that the administration’s position, in the wake of the deadliest day of attacks in over a year, was entirely unchanged and that it was simply a matter of waiting for Iraq to request to see if the US would remain or not.
Of course top Iraqi officials including Prime Minister Maliki have repeatedly ruled out keeping US troops in the nation, but after the administration ignored these comments and kept pressing for an “answer” Maliki has moved toward favoring “some” troops, particularly as violence is on the rise.
Though President Obama declared an end to “combat operations” in Iraq a year ago, combat continues nationwide, with US warplanes launching attacks against targets in the nation without cooperating with the locals, spawning complaints from the parliament and making parliamentary approval for the continued occupation all the more difficult.
It will be interesting to see what the "O" folks cum up with…. I see they let that Grainer MORON (the directer of torture photos and vids at Abu Gharab]] out EARLY….. Probably hoping tp stir up trouble that THEY will be needed to control…….. I don't think it's working…. This is a sophisticated polity….. Not easy to con with cheap tricks… A million dead because of NeoCon lies and forgeries…!!!
Is anyone surprised by this. Why the pathetic charade. Any chance the Iraqis grow some gonads and tell the US to get the hell out already?
No need to tell the U.S. to go… The window of LEGAL occupation runs out at midnight 12/31/11……… No need for the unpleasant "bums rush" Bye, bye….
Since when has "legalities" made a serious difference to the MIC? If they want, they'll just ignore the deadline – for the good of the Iraqis…
What, did the US have to twist its own arm for this?
Please, stop with the puppet shows and shadow plays and just tell the truth for a change. We're staying in Iraq regardless of what the Iraqi government or people say, and we're not leaving until we're driven out by force. We have economic interests that we are beholden to our corporations to protect, and it's cheaper to pay out a military life insurance claim than it is to secure these economic interests through normal business channels. As long as our economy stays depressed, we will have a virtually endless supply of soldiers with which to impose our will on Iraq and the rest of the world. Our politicians have staked their careers on the propaganda they have sold to the American public, and for them to reverse their positions would make them at best distrusted and at worst (for them) unelectable. There is too much money at stake, too much pressure from Israel, and too many unanswered questions (questions that will hopefully, in their eyes, be forgotten the longer we stay in Iraq) for us to back out now.
Is the decline of the United States of America really worth all of this? Is it really worth it?
I agree 100%. The entire White House should stay in Iraq. Michelle, Barack, their two daughters, Hilary, and the rest of the warmongers should move to Baghdad. They can live in the new 500 million dollar embassy.
it should really be the Pentagon's new base of operations, after all, they run everything now anyway.
Everyone else is just a Pentagon apologist at this point, running cover for the warmongering operations wherever the Pentagon deems it neccessary
… if Iraqi parliamentary approval for the continued occupation is not forthcoming, the US and the Maliki government will simply ignore it. US troops are in Iraq to stay, unfortunately.
So I assume the Iraqis will pay the costs?
We, as people are so fckd.. We are laden with this cost, life and treasure.
This situation calls for a national referendum. The politicians don't get it,
but I think that it is ridiculous for the Iraqis to "invite " us to stay there.
Each and every social economic or political problems facing the people in Middle East for last 60 years is simply because of US and EU falsified democracy and their fight over the peoples wealth in Middle East.., the fashion simply continues for US and EU capitalism and its militarism regime (NATO) agendas for the region, is simply for the reason for US and EU hegemony in conquering the entire area for their wars with other nations political and social economic systems.., is simply protecting the tyrants as Saudis and UAE because of their economical investments in US and EU and their oil, is simply slaving the people of Middle East and rest of the world by occupying their countries while stealing peoples wealth. Is a militarism disease spreading itself to north African nation for the same reasons using the terrorist groups and allies as Muslims Brotherhood and their supporters as Saudis and UAE. This is new trend in segregations used by US and EU politicians whom are supporter of neo fascism.
Consider staying in Iraq? I thought that staying there was a foregone conclusion given the full court press from all the media personalities, think tanks and alike warning of a calamity if US withdraws. Naturally, a suitable exuse would be found, and the soldiers will just change their functional name, say to advisers, trainers, etc. Did anyone think that was not going to happen? Just more money down the drain, but as the ever newer commitement are made all over the globe, this is not surprising. Just recently, more money was given to Kyrgizstan to replace its air traffic control with US one, to the tune of few hundred million dollars. Such petty cash expenditure occur on daily basis all over the world. The logic eludes me, as we watch US towns sinking into depression. But then, what do I know.
Surprise,Surprise, well at least the arms dealers are happy!
The US was never going to leave. The only way we will get all are troops home in other wars and places like Germany,Japan and closing all the empires bases around the world is if DR Paul gets elected. He will if the elections are not riged against him or they don't assasinate him like JFK and many others.Ron Paul may be Americas last hope of avoiding a cival war were many police and military will stand with the people like the constitution says is law if your government becomes tyranicle withch happened a long time ago.We are just starting to feel the negative results that will get much worse if there is not as complete change to following the constitution the law.Ron Paul 2012.Im Canadian but see how important it is he becomes President.
I do hope they received an engraved invitation with an RSVP request.
Good manners are so important when dealing with the countries we invade.
This is a joke, we are in a super-glue operation!
you don't really think they never considered staying until now????
Do you know what happens when you do armed robbery at a gas station? You are not welcome back. Pretty simple. The Bush/Cheney criminal clan has gone off and left us holding the bag. I suggest we ditch any flake running who says "More war!", and throw as many of them in prison for something so the world knows America, and not the racist entities loyal to the City of London, are back in business.
Ron Paul is the only hope of such a withdrawal which means the chances are slim to none.
