Russian Strikes in Kharkiv Kill 10 as Ukraine Launches Hundreds of Drones at Moscow

The mayor of Moscow said 620 drones were launched toward the capital

Russian strikes in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region killed at least 10 civilians on Tuesday as Ukrainian forces launched another major drone barrage into Russian territory.

According to Oleg Synegubov, the governor of Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast, the two Russian missiles struck the village of Pechenihy, damaging a cafe, private homes, shops, and setting multiple cars on fire. He said that at least 10 people were killed and 18 were injured in the attack.

In Russia, the Defense Ministry reported that overnight, its air defense forces shot down 791 Ukrainian drones over multiple Russian regions and the Black and Azov Seas, which came just two days after Ukraine fired more than 800 drones into Russia in a single night, one of the largest attacks on Russia of the war.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said 620 of the drones fired overnight Tuesday into Wednesday were launched toward the capital, and 180 were intercepted in the Moscow region. The Russian news agency TASS reported it as the largest attack against Moscow over the past two years.

No deaths were reported in Russia on Tuesday, but at least three people, including a child, were injured in the Moscow Oblast, three were injured in the neighboring Ryazan Oblast, and five civilians were wounded in the Belgorod Oblast, which borders Ukraine.

Overall, civilian casualties in Russia have risen significantly this year as Ukraine has ramped up its US-backed long-range drone attacks, which have led to heavier Russian bombardments of Ukraine, causing a spike in civilian casualties there. A Russian Foreign Ministry official said on Tuesday that over the past week, Ukrainian attacks have killed about 70 civilians in Russia and Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine.
