Israel continues to bomb Syria with impunity and targeted the western Syrian city of Homs with airstrikes that flattened a building in a residential neighborhood early Wednesday morning, killing several civilians.
Syria’s SANA news agency said a “number” of civilians were killed and injured but didn’t specify how many. “The aggression led to the martyrdom and injury of a number of civilians, and some material losses to public and private property,” a military source told SANA.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a total of 11 people were killed in the Israeli attack, including seven civilians, although the number is not confirmed. SOHR also said two members of Lebanon’s Hezbollah were killed in the attack. Israeli missiles also hit targets outside of Homs in the countryside.
Israel has been bombing Syria for years and has significantly stepped up its airstrikes in the country since October 7. Israeli strikes have killed several members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which risks provoking a major war in the region.
An IRGC advisor was reported killed by Israeli airstrikes in Damascus last Friday. Later that day, the US launched a series of airstrikes in Iraq and Syria that the US military said targeted the IRGC and affiliated militias. About 40 people were reported killed in the US bombing, but there’s no sign any Iranians were killed.

I also support the right of any country to expel foreign invaders, but I don’t want to be the one footing the bill and don’t think that my country should be using Ukrainians as cannon fodder for a fading hegemony. If Europe wants to fund project Ukraine, let them. The U.S. has better uses of its resources, rather than making Russia an enemy. What I also support is an immediate ceasefire and talks to settle the Ukraine question to both Russia and Ukraine’s satisfaction. I support the de-escalation of the conflict by ending American aid so that Ukraine will be forced deal with long term geopolitical realities rather than transitory political fads in Washington, D.C.

It seems to me that if Ukraine had guaranteed Russian speaking Ukrainians’ rights that would have went a long way towards preventing a Russian invasion. Obviously there’s no way to litigate this particular point at this late date. As the Chatham House analysis I linked to above points out it basically comes down to what degree is Ukraine a sovereign nation. I think we can all agree that Ukraine is just as sovereign as Canada or Mexico is sovereign. How does anyone think that the U.S. government would react if either of our neighbors concluded military pacts with Russia or China? What if Russia or China planned to put medium range nuclear missiles in Mexico or Canada? How would the U.S. react? I think the Cuban missile crisis provides us with that answer. Does this mean that I support Russia’s war in Ukraine or “want them to win”? No, obviously like any normal human being who has not been propagandized by the MSM I abhor war in all its forms. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t understand the Russian perspective, nor does it mean I am not able to see that they have legitimate security concerns re Ukraine (especially given that the last time they were invaded through Ukraine they lost something like 27-40 million people). Either way the quicker Ukraine gets to the negotiating table the better the outcome for all involved…well except for the war profiteers and money launderers that is.

Once they’re finished in Ukraine Russia will have a huge surplus available to ship to anyone who needs defending from the US. They’re apparently already sharing lessons learned with China and Iran, who build their own systems already.
They have already given the Syrians S-300s, but they seem reluctant to give anyone else their S-400s. I could be wrong, but I don’t think there are any non-Russian operators.
Russia’s annual military spend is 1/3 of China and China’s 1/3 of the US. The US spends 40% of world’s total military spend. Russia has universal health care and US bridges are falling down 🙂
re US military budget: US is a dying empire. It’s now in a stage transitioning from finance to carion capitalism, merchants of death. Guns are now almost the principle way of apropriating working class wealth. The point is not as with Russia and China that it should make for a successful military; peer to peer it were easily defeated; so it sticks to killing defenseless targets and civilians.
