The US and its allies in the Group of Seven are preparing to support the proxy war in Ukraine for years to come, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
One unnamed official from a European G7 nation told the paper that the war could last six or seven more years and that the allies need to prepare financially to keep fueling the conflict for that long.
US and NATO officials have been saying publicly that they are preparing for a long war. “Most wars last longer than expected when they first begin. Therefore, we must prepare ourselves for a long war in Ukraine,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Sunday.
At the recent NATO summit in Vilnius, the G7 nations pledged to negotiate their own bilateral security deals with Ukraine to provide long-term military support. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Biden administration is looking to reach a deal with Ukraine to tie the hands of a future president who may want to wind down support for the proxy war.
While the majority of Congress still supports funding the war, a loud minority of Republicans in the House are making it difficult to authorize the $24 billion in additional spending on Ukraine that the White House has requested. The White House wants the aid passed before the fiscal year ends on September 30.
Opposition to the policy is growing among voters, as a recent CNN poll found 55% of Americans were against Congress authorizing more spending on the war, including 71% of Republicans who were asked.
I find it difficult to believe that anyone who knows anything really thinks the key European NATO nations are going to support this disaster for anything like six or seven more years.
I wonder what odds the British bookmakers are giving.
Well, British arms dealers just had hoopla weapons convention in London, declaring “War is health of arms industry.” Meanwhile, in US Lockheed Martin just told stockholders revenue will go up 32% in next five years. They are counting on a long war.
The Brits are mad-dog supporters of the war, as usual, and will probably be the last to back away. On the other hand, Germany is exceedingly unlikely to remain committed to sacrificing its economy and standard of living for years into the future. Nor are most other European nations.
And the Us can’t continue this mess without European support.
Perhaps not but they will certainly try.
I don’t think it’s at all certain they would try if Europe backed away. Support in the US is weakening also.
But the Neocons have no reverse gear.
That’s true, but without European support, they couldn’t do much more than sponsor annoying guerrilla attacks that wouldn’t likely amount to serious trouble for Russia and whichever parts of the former Ukraine end up remaining with Russia.
Well, they made the Afghanistan caper last 20 years … 7 may be a low estimate here …
On the other hand, they are fighting against a side that knows and has the means to fight back this time. Perhaps Russia also has a say as to how long this thing goes?
And it all started and ended with a big bang.
The Afghanistan misadventure had minimal impact on Europe. The Ukraine disaster is having a huge impact on Europe. Apples and oranges.
Russia has a great deal to say about the duration of the war, of course, but if the US and European NATO members insist on continuing it, Russia won’t be able to truly end it — except of course in the same way the US-NATO can always end it, by taking action that might end everything.
Yes, Afghanistan lasted much longer. That military campaign shouldn’t have even started, but that’s another topic of discussion.
The difference is that Ukraine is right in collective Europe’s face, or, up their a$$ depending on how you look at it. Culture and geography make this an inaccurate comparison to the Afghan war(s).
I think this winter will be telling and dependent on Russia’s movement and action along the front. They know this type of battle far too well.
In addition, Poland stepping back on support has made this more interesting as well. If this snowballs with the EU, it will have a definite impact. It would be great to see the US at this all alone.
Zelinsky’s latest spew at the UN is pure desperation. His statements and specific demands for action against Russia were preposterous. He has lost his mind and now only playing emotional cards because that’s all he can, or ever did, bring to the table as a puppet leader. His days are numbered.
Tick, tick, tick……….
Whatever the odds are,I would take the chance that the Europeans want to survive despite their fiefdom as the US servant.
The US/NATO WAR MACHINE CAN KISS MY A—. Keep playing with fire and someone is going to get burned. (Maybe ALOT of US.)
Fire + wind+ radiation = death and destruction of humankind, animals and the planet.
in 7 years Russia will have Odessa Kharkov and most everything east of the Dnieper.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you.
Newsweek is a bastion of news?
I can not believe anyone actually said that. Next comes Time magazine,The NY times and CNN.Happy reading and hearing nothing but lies.
And patriotic US capitalists will have broken the US into little pieces too small to resist theit plundering ways.
I want to wish Rand Paul the best. I hope he succeeds.
I can’t wait for the other Senator from Kentucky to take a powder.
Soon enough your dream will come true.
Which is exactly why I didn’t want this war to start. Once the US Neocons smell blood of a nation, they never stop and we also never stop believing them. Look at Korea, Iraq, and Syria. The only difference is Russia has over 6,000 nuclear weapons that will likely end all of us. I know, I’m an idiot. But, you listen to intellectual giants like Biden, Victoria Nuland, and Hillary Clinton all day. So, humor me for a second. Anyone here thinks Russia and China decided to stop producing more nuclear weapons? (Sarcasm)
Russia is currently China’s lapdog and will continue to be. (Countries are paying for Russian goods with the yuan and not the ruble!) Russia only has the nuclear threat left to use and they probably couldn’t get their nukes to work anyway. But you tankies keep trying!
Whatever the F–K that means.. Russia is waiting for the right moment to close this show with it’s force!
HAHAHAHAHAHA! OK!
With some people truth goes in one ear and out the other without hitting the brain.
China will never be Russias lapdog. They are not yet the savior of Mankind. But at least they are moving in the right direction making alliances with the Global South. They have flaws with how they treat minorities. So does the US. Some things never change in this exceptional Nation.
“Russia is currently China’s lapdog.”
Did you miss that?
You and Don Julio are in the same class to be laughed at for your ignorance and stupidity.
Says the ignorant and stupid person…
Not if they are using their noodles.
These are intelligent men??
Many species of animals are smarter.
Such as Dung Beetles.
The Elephant is stronger,Cheetah is faster,The Mamba is more deadly but not by much.
Such as Dung Beetles.
If they add two more members they can say the war will go on for nine more years.
You are hilarious but I am not laughing. It is our present and future with which they are playing.
Does it ever end?
George Marshall said that a democracy can’t fight a seven years war. Of course, one can question just how democratic the NATO nations are. Also, Marshall referenced a high casualty rate as the sticking point. But, in this war, so far, at least, the casualties are only being suffered by the proxy state, not its allegedly democratic backers.
Ukraine War Could Last for Seven More Years
wait, what? OMG wait, what! OMG wait, what? OMG you can’t even make this sh*t up.
who invents this BS!? OMG who invents this BS? question mark, what.
reply = i give up. i don’t even know how to be a real adult in the room any more.
damnit.
We don’t have any adults in the room anymore. Maybe Noam, but he’s the only one left . And jimmy Carter. Hey that’s two. Course they’re both in their mid- nineties… sigh
i like Mr. Carter. i hope he is still kicking
Neither the US nor the EU have a choice on when this war ends. It ends when Putin either decides to negotiate – which isn’t going to happen until the Zelensky regime no longer exists and neither does the Ukrainian military – or decides to finally do the major advance the Russians need to finish it.
Since Ukraine will no longer be capable of withstanding a major Russian advance within the next 3-6 months, unless the Ukraine military does a coup on the Zelensky regime, they are going to be annihilated by next summer. This might be extended if Russia decides to wait further over the winter until spring to finally crush the Ukrainian army – which I think would be a dumb move, but they might do it.
As I have established in my Substack posts, Ukraine is losing 60-100,000 troops per month and can not possibly have more than another 250,000 combat capable troops remaining on or near the front lines. Do the math.
