A US Navy spy plane flew over the Taiwan Strait on Thursday as China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was conducting drills to the south of Taiwan.
The US Navy’s Seventh Fleet announced the flight of the Navy P-8A Poseidon, and Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said the plane flew on the south side of the median line, an unofficial barrier that separates the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
China said it tracked the US aircraft and accused the US of hyping the incident. “The troops of the PLA Eastern Theater Command have tracked and monitored the US aircraft in the whole course, and handled it in line with laws and regulations,” said a spokesperson for the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command.
The US frequently sails warships through the Taiwan Strait, which China views as provocations. Surveillance flights have typically been less frequent but are becoming more common. The last known US flight over the Taiwan Strait took place in April.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said PLA ships and planes conducted a third day of drills on Thursday. The ministry also said it detected Chinese aircraft crossing the median line, a barrier the PLA used to avoid but now regularly crosses.
The PLA started regularly crossing the median line after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visited Taiwan in August 2022. Her visit provoked China’s largest-ever military exercises around the island, and the PLA has kept up the pressure as the US and Taiwan continue to boost military and diplomatic ties.
If anybody in charge in China reads this, here’s some advice. Let Wash. waste all the money trying to provoke China to fire the first shot. All those provocations cost millions of US dollars. Don’t fire the first shot so the MSM can imply you’re the bad guys. Wash. and it’s lackeys in the media can’t fool all the people all the time.
I agree with you and Bob Marley–“You can fool some people some times but you cant fool all the people all the time.” But, I’ve been wanting to tell him that from talking to my neighbors and family, it appears they can fool most people most of the time. (Sarcasm alert)
damnit i am flipping all yalls off damnit
Don’t go flipping me. “I shot the Sheriff, but not the deputy.” I know I know. Not “Some of the busiest rhymes ever made by man.”–Young MC. LOL
“Wash. and it’s lackeys in the media can’t fool all the people all the time”
but what if the people are already fools?
Should China be cool-yes.Are these flights a provocation-no-they reinforce Taiwan’s freedom.
Taiwan is not part of the USA, and the actions of Wash. are putting them in danger of invasion. What has the American people got out of all these wars of intervention since WWII? We pay for it, it’s OUR MONEY and we have no say in how it’s spent, even if millions are slaughtered for the imperial aims of Wash. and US corps. WWIII is coming as I type.
The US is hyping the incident says the Chinese as they were hyping the “incident” themselves
The median line runs north and south, so how could the spy plane fly south side of the median line?
It runs SW to NE.

a predominant north and south line is what separates Taiwan and China.
I gave you a link to a map that includes a compass rose. Here’s a picture:

Let me know If you need more assistance.
You didn’t give me jack crap.
i would appreciate some more assistance.
i like these maps that you posted – i live in N. Los Angeles and when i look at a map i see ten thousand roads all leading to no-where.
Sorry, can’t help with L.A. I think the best option is a GoFundMe campaign to finance an escape.
China is West of Taiwan. See it? So it wasn’t south of the line. It was SE of the line. See that too?
You’re being ridiculous, unless, of course, you’re simply stunningly geographically ignorant. That would just be sad.
The median line in the Taiwan Strait runs from southwest to northeast, as I said. You barely need map-reading skills to see that.
Your claim that the median line runs north and south is wrong.
I’m going to stop now. You should have stopped a few posts ago. 🙄
Look at the troll.
You’ve post over 90 times today with this account you just dusted off.
Are you paid by the post or the word count?
The line in the article was incorrect:
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said the plane flew on the south side of the median line, an unofficial barrier that separates the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Almost 90 posts in 8 hours….
Does trolling pay well?
Does politely correcting an erroneous post and then getting a bit snarky when the OP goes full-on stubbornly stupid count as trolling to you? I think you should work on reading comprehension. And counting.
Dude, you are a troll and your history verifies it.
90 posts in a 8 hour shift is impressive but it sure identifies you.
Does correcting the article rankle you that much? Now settle down and admit that the article was incorrect and stop being so bull-headed.
OK, one more time: I politely pointed out that your post “correcting the article” is wrong.. You wrote:
“The median line runs north and south, so how could the spy plane fly south side of the median line?”
That’s not true. I explained that the median line actually runs from southwest to northeast, which it indisputably does. It’s easy to see that with a glance at a map. Given that reality, it’s also easy to see why Dave DeCamp might cite directions as he does in the post above the line. It isn’t really accurate, but it’s no less accurate than your insistence on a north-south orientation for the median line.
You decided, or for some reason felt compelled, to double down on your error (which was no big deal to begin with), and I responded to your stubbornness less than politely.
You are still wrong. And you and at least one other poster are unable to stop arguing and/or typing nonsensical accusations of trolling. The bullheadedness is all yours. It’s weird.
Edit: Using Google Earth Pro, it’s trivial to measure the approximate heading of the median line, beginning at the southwest entrance to the strait. I get a forward azimuth of 36 degrees, which we would typically refer to, casually, as NNE, never simply as N.
why are you beating your head against a wall ?
just give up. hey remember when i suggested a sandwich?
I’m not hurting my head. I’m just amusing myself, exploring how far the OP will go to avoid recognizing a trivial error. Humans can be quite silly about these things.
In any event, I’m satisfied in this case: The OP will never stop. S/He can’t.
Don’t overestimate your stupidity. The line is far more in a north/south direction than east/west, unless you can’t read a map. Now buzz off.
dude OMG what – hey do you like sandwiches ?
The dude is a troll.
Look at his history.
3 years ago someone created the account and made a single post on a very obscure website.
A few months ago they started making a single short post every few days on this site until this morning when the count was in the low 30s.
Now the account has over 120 comments; 90+ comments were made just today with maps even.
They are someone’s payroll and you must be interesting to them….oh oh…lol.
hold it …. are you suggesting that the commenter known as Dissident51 is a troll ?
damnit. i have been laboring under the illusion that all of my internet friends are in fact my real friends in real life.
damnit. hey everybody, all-yalls are invited to my birthday party – even the buzz-kill guys such as Colin, Julio and Righteous Thinkerer
There are trolls, and some can be quite fun but this guy just threw up almost 90 detailed posts (some with maps even) in a single 8 hour shift .
This is on a account that barely had 30 comments that morning.
He must just got hired because most are not this obvious.
The US Navy’s Seventh Fleet announced the flight of their spy-plane
“hey everybody check out our spy-plane – look how sneaky we are!”

China should do what Russia did with the U2 spy plane SHOOT IT DOWN .
The U2 spy plane was shot down over Russia. Shooting down a plane over international waters is likely to be deemd a little more provocative.
Yes. Instead of shooting it down, China should fly a spy plane as close to the U.S. as the U.S. plane is to China. Let’s see how the hypocritical U.S. responds to that.
