Israeli Airstrikes Hit Syria, Three Civilians Reported Wounded

The strikes targeted the Syrian city of Homs

Israeli airstrikes hit targets near the western Syrian city of Homs early Saturday morning.

According to the Syrian news agency SANA, three civilians were wounded in the strikes. A civilian fuel station caught fire and a number of tankers and trucks burned as a result of the strike.

“The Israeli enemy carried out an air attack with a number of missiles, from the direction of north Lebanon, targeting several positions in the vicinity of the city of Homs,” the SANA report said.

April and March saw heavy Israeli bombardment of Syria amid a political crisis in Israel over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul. A few days before the strikes in Homs, Israel shelled southern Syria and later dropped threatening leaflets in the area, warning Syrian soldiers against cooperation with Hezbollah.

At the beginning of April, separate Israeli attacks in Syria killed two members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and two civilians. In March, Israel twice targeted the Aleppo Airport and temporarily put it out of service, halting earthquake aid flights into the Syrian city.

While Israel frequently bombs Syria, Israeli officials rarely acknowledge individual airstrikes. Israel frames its operations in the country as part of its campaign against Iran, but the strikes often harm civilians and Syrian soldiers.
