The World Bank said in a new report that Ukraine’s reconstruction will cost at least $411 billion over the next ten years, a number that will rise as the war drags on.
The report said the $411 billion figure should be seen as a “minimum as needs will continue to rise as long as the war continues.”
World Bank Vice President Anna Bjerde previously estimated the reconstruction would cost between $525 billion-$630 billion, but the report issued Wednesday was more precise and was produced jointly with the US and Ukrainian governments.
After the new report came out, Bjerde said Ukraine’s reconstruction will take “several years” and will require public investments “complemented by significant private investment to increase the available financing for reconstruction.”
American investment firms and banks are looking to cash in on the reconstruction project. Bankers from JP Morgan Chase visited Ukraine in February and signed a memorandum of understanding with President Volodymyr Zelensky and agreed to help raise private capital for a new fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction.
In January, Zelensky addressed the US National Association of State Chambers and said American corporations would find “big business” in rebuilding Ukraine. “Everyone can become a big business by working with Ukraine. In all sectors — from weapons and defense to construction, from communications to agriculture, from transport to IT, from banks to medicine,” he said.
The new estimate from the World Bank comes as there is no sign that the fighting in Ukraine will end anytime soon. China recently launched an initiative to try and foster peace talks between the warring sides, but it’s not yet clear if it will lead to real negotiations.
War is BIG BUSINESS. PEACE is cheaper, it just takes the effort…
Unless they surrender to Russia, they’ve sold their country to the banksters. There’s no other way out of the debt they’ve accumulated.
Is it not less than the foreign debt of Greece?
https://tradingeconomics.com/greece/external-debt
If so then Ukraine is a lot better positioned to pay it back, even if they had to borrow the money.
borrow money to pay back their loan?
N o I meant borrow all the money quoted to rebuild externally as opposed to financing much of it from the domestic workforce/population.
That said, all countries borrow money to pay back loans – when they rollover debt.
But you can bet your rear end, in couple decades, they’ll be better off as a nation than Russia will.
You can’t possibly know that and you’re just talking out of your ass.
Yes, out of my ass, I’m giving an opinion, you dummy. Why don’t you go attack the pro Russia crazies here if you are so antiwar? Again, you hate to hear predictions like that because you don’t want Ukraine to have a happy ending. That would ruin your anti US narrative.
Just move to Russia if you hate US so much. End the suffering.
And I gave an opinion that you were talking out of your ass. But yes Don, I want Ukraine to be annihilated because I hate the US. That must be it. It couldn’t be what I have been repeating over and over until I’m blue in the face and that is that Ukraine is being used as fodder by the west to weaken Russia. And that’s not an opinion but fact. A fact you continue to ignore while pushing for more Ukrainian deaths. That’s your happy ending.
It’s too early in the morning for such talk.
Start your day with a smile DJ.
Well that is if they do not surrender to the Russians 🙂
Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq are MUCH worse off than … well pretty much anywhere else.
We did not clean up the depleted uranium that we used in Iraq, what evidence is there that we would clean it up in Ukraine???
Depleted uranium shells will be used by the Ukrainians when they feel their usage justified – they will clean up the battlefield to the extend they feel it is needed. NATO used 30000 DU shells in Kosovo while the lingering effects are not clearly known Kosovar specialists working there judge that the lingering effects of the Chernobyl accident are still larger.
So while using DU shells in Iraq was and remains a problem because there is little rainfall to wash the dust into the ground, that is much less of a problem in places with substantial rainfall.
As for the countries you think are doing worse – well Iraq is doing much better than under Saddam:
https://tradingeconomics.com/iraq/gdp
Afghanistan absolutely thrived while under US occupation and has only dropped after the US left.
https://tradingeconomics.com/afghanistan/gdp
Libya was never invaded – and hence they have been left to their own which is the problem!?
Is that all? A drop in a European without natural gas bucket.
Ludicrously small amount of money needed to actually “build back” to any kind of functioning nation, especially with the industrial east of the country gone; but a very nice chunk of change for the western companies that will get the contracts.
Isn’t this great? Our military corporations get to profit from breaking the place and civil corporations profit from rebuilding … a nice cycle of crony capitalism.
“Crony Capitalism” makes me itch…
Biden: “Where do I sign the check?”
China fostering peace is quite laughable. The country that want’s “no limits” on it’s relations with tyrants and human rights abusers and no laws getting in the way of tyrants taking more for tyrants. Is America’s vision for the world better if not one flawed in execution and history? I’d argue, yes. Yes it is better to require human rights and rules based order over guns based order and sheer show of force.
You may be right JC4P.
“Yes it is better to require human rights and rules based order over guns based order and sheer show of force.”
$886 billion.
Well, what do you propose China and Russia would do if that were zero dollars? I’m just asking as a lifetime advocate of shrinking our budget. The worst thing we’ve done is invade countries like Iraq and Afghanistan in my opinion. It’s sets the wrong example to the rest of the world and then puts you on hollow ground to accuse Russia or China or any other country for invading a sovereign nation. Everyone can find a just cause if they choose too. Leaders much choose diplomacy and peace, regardless, of military force and budget.
Then we should stop promoting proxy wars, coups, police actions, sanctioned killings on the other side of borders, etc… Right? Or is that what you call a rules-based world order?
Your comment about the US stands in opposition to the fact that out of the 230 odd years, Uncle Sam has been at war in all but about 15 of them.
Please explain.
The “Butterfly Effect” comes into play as it relates to the situation in Ukraine. Ongoing events brings home changes to the value of the American dollar and your wallet. Large and small events worldwide dictate changes in your home town, i.e. Inflation!
Follow the money and you will find the “casus belli” for the Ukrainian war’s continuation.
“The ‘casus belli’, a Latin term describing a situation said to justify a state in initiating war.”
Silly platitudes like fighting for Ukrainian democracy or freedom are often bandied about. Another platitude is a war to foment regime change in Russia and displace Vladimir Putin or this war is about “Bleeding Russia” and weakening it, according to Lloyd J Austin.
Here is another story if you follow the money.
“World Bank Says Ukraine’s Reconstruction Will Cost at Least $411 Billion – The estimate is a minimum and will rise as the war continues”
FYI the “World Bank”: The bank is headquartered in Washington, D.C. in the United States. It provided around $98.83 billion in loans and assistance to “developing” and transitioning nations. Although part of the UN it is run by America.
“American investment firms and banks are looking to cash in on the reconstruction project. Bankers from JP Morgan Chase visited Ukraine in February and signed a memorandum of understanding with President Volodymyr Zelensky and agreed to help raise private capital for a new fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction.”
Now you see part of the reason the puppet king, Joey Biden, and his handlers do not want to end this war in Ukraine. The more destruction the better for American business contracts after the war.
If Russia takes all of Ukraine, then Russia will rebuild Ukraine with the help of China and Germany. If there is a peace settlement any areas under Ukrainian control will be rebuilt with lucrative contracts for American companies paid for by American government funding.
Joey Biden’s brother had one of these contracts to build housing in Iraq after that war to the tune of several $1.5 Billion.

How much will Hunter Biden and the Biden family rake off of reconstruction in Ukraine?
How much will American Oligarchs and their families make off of reconstruction in Ukraine?
Bottom line American taxpayers will be left holding the bag for financing much of the reconstruction of Ukraine if any part of it remains. As for all of the weapons; there will be a price tag demanded from Ukraine in land and production of products for many years.
Can you imagine the American National Debt after America pays for rebuilding Ukraine?
While American and European Oligarchs sit on high salivating at the potential spoils in Ukraine like vultures waiting to swoop in; the people of Ukraine are paying the price for the spoils to come.
Sequere pecuniam. (Latin for “Follow the money.”
If Russia prevails, will the West still send aid?
Yes, they will. The West might be a monster to you, but they do a lot of great deeds and provide a lot of assistance to developing countries around the world.
Still waiting for Santa and the Easter Bunny?
Yes, just like you.
I guess that strongly depends on what you mean by Russia prevailing – if there is no free independent Ukraine, then certainly no, the West will not help the Russians rebuild what will then be part of Russia.
Russia should be responsible to pay for all the damages they have created and compensate victims of its one year invasion… but we all know Putin won’t pay for S!it.
Russia is already reconstructing all the Russian regions it annexed. All four of them. Demolished structurally not sound buildings, renovating soud ones, rebuilding infrastructure, hospitals and schools. Data is available, but if you do noy care to look up -/ it does not exist,
Oarticulsrly idious were Ukrainuan orphanages that Rusdia rescued chikdren from.
If you are really this allergic to learning facts — here is something you can trust: BBC report on Ukrainian orphanages. On tied up chimdren to grown men still kept in children’s cribs, deforming thei lummbs.
If after that you do not THANK Lutin for rescuing them. you have no heart.
Pfff, Russia isn’t rebuilding jack. Russia is broke, they won’t have money do anything. The Donbas separatists are already regretting this deal with the devil. In Mariupol they built one building for show only prior to Putin’s visit.
What they are doing in Mariupol is demolishing and covering all the evidence of war crimes. They didn’t bother pulling the civilians and soldiers bodies from basements.
And Russia didn’t rescue any orphanages, they straight up stole those kids, many others were taken after Russia killed their parents.. You are repeating Kremlin BS propaganda as usual.
Putin is a war criminal.
Don Julio is a troll. So there 😉
And you are an idiot.
Of course, 10% of that price tag is earmarked for the “Big Guy.”
