The US is considering a package of sanctions on China to deter Beijing from invading Taiwan, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
The sources said that the discussions on the sanctions were in their early stages and didn’t detail possible measures Washington could impose. But they would have to go beyond the sanctions the US has already implemented on China in recent years. The report also said that Taiwan has been lobbying the EU to take similar action.
It’s not clear from the report if the US would impose the sanctions before any Chinese attack on Taiwan or if the threat of the sanctions package is meant to be a deterrent.
The report comes as the sanctions imposed on Russia after the Ukraine invasion are largely backfiring on the West as the US and Europe are facing soaring energy prices and Moscow is profiting more from oil sales than before the war. The US economy is much more intertwined with China than Russia, so any major sanctions against Beijing would likely hurt the US more than the measures targeting Moscow.
The Reuters report said that the sanctions were being considered after China launched its largest-ever military drills around Taiwan in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visiting the island. Beijing made clear it would have a significant response to Pelosi’s trip, but it didn’t stop her from going.
China has kept up the military pressure on Taiwan as US officials continue to visit the island. Since Pelosi made her trip in early August, five more US delegations have traveled to Taipei.
It’s too little and too late. We are witnessing the last days of these U.S. as the worlds sole power.
It’s already over. U r not seeing the final days of the unipolar world order but the beginning of the multipolar world order.
I expect HiMars would be more effective
The Biden administration hasn’t learned anything from the consequences of the sanctions it placed on Russia. But as those consequences take effect over the next few months, it will become increasingly difficult to convince his own voters that he’s acting in their best interests.
Presume you mean inflation, but all indications are they don’t really care, are confident they can manage “the people”. Nor will the prospective sanctions be related to Beijing’s posturing toward Taiwan. More likely they’ve been long part of the program of escalation toward provoking Xi to take over Taiwan, … another Ukraine.
The world is uniting in hatred for the US government and the other five-eyed monsters. China is eventually going to be forced to write off the one percent’s debts to it so it might as well cinch up its belt and blockade now.
What if China decided on a one year moratorium from producing products for U.S. markets. What if Vietnam and Indonesia do the same. I would expect prices of products in the U.S. to rise exponentially, due to having American labor, at higher wages, doing the assembling.
“US Considers Sanctions on China to Deter Taiwan Attack,” I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Does this make any sense to anyone?! It reminds me of a tale about, “Cart before the horse.” If “Since Pelosi made her trip in early August, five more US delegations have traveled to Taipei” not going to provoke China to invade, then this must be next on the list. The exact same formula as with Ukraine. Then, we will have WMD false flags again and everyone will scream “unprovoked aggression” in unison. Really nauseating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cart_before_the_horse
We have had preemptive wars now we are going to have preemptive SANCTIONS. What will the lunatics in the US come up with next?
I’m sure they are plotting and planning right now…
‘The White House is focused on getting countries on the same page…’
We were and (officially at least) still are on the same page: there is only one China.
Even the US isn’t stupid enough to punish itself with broad sanctions on China now.
“Even the US isn’t stupid enough to punish itself with broad sanctions on China now.” I’m sorry to disagree, my friend. Example: we are depleting the strategic petroleum reserves to keep the price of oil low enough for the democrats to win the next elections. Anyone complaining? Is that a good enough example? I have many more.

Scary stuff.
You mean we haven’t pirated enough Iranian oil?
Syria’s oil helps a little, and stealing a few tanker loads bound for Venezuela helps, too. Did the 1% keep all of Venezuela’s Citgo to themselves when the US stole that?
I wasn’t initially pleased with your partisan characterization, but that is a great link, good example, and fair conclusion. While fracking and drilling even more is no solution, living in denial a little longer by tapping the reserve so much is strategic only on the level of party politics. Yes, we are stupid enough to not reasonably manage our unsustainable practices.
Taiwan being played for a patsy again after our total betrayal of Taiwan in 1979. Ever since Nixon/Kissinger, Taiwan has been treated as a pawn to be toyed with.
Imposing sanctions on China PRIOR to its invading Taiwan as a deterrent ?
Wave after wave of sanctions imposed on Russia following the 2014 invasion of Crimea convinced Russia that ultimately it just did not matter anymore.
Russia felt it had little left to lose and in fact maybe something to gain by disengaging with the west and engaging with China in the East.
China has learned this lesson very well and all things being equal has no wish to have sanctions imposed on them as it likes being part of the global economy. This is what is currently affording Taiwan “some” protection.
If the US goes and imposes sanctions on China now then China may well also come to the belief that the US can no longer be dealt with rationally
China may feel it then has little to lose by invading Taiwan.
When goods stop crossing borders, soldiers will
We are not sleep walking towards WW III
We are participating in “Pickets Charge”
LOL the EU is already facing a doomsday winter with the Russia sanctions in place, and now they want to do the same to China? It’s never been so much fun watching so many nations cut their own throats to please their masters in Washington (who, by the way, are cutting their own throats as well).
My girlfriend takes off her dress and panties to avoid rape. She is Taiwanese.
If I hear the phrase “US sanctions on (insert nation of choice here)” one more time, I’m gonna puke.
