A revival of the Iran nuclear deal now seems unlikely as the US has characterized Iran’s latest response in the EU-mediated negotiations as “moving backwards.”
Iran delivered the text early Friday morning Tehran time and called its response “constructive.” But in comments to Politico, an unnamed US official slammed the Iranian response as “not at all encouraging.”
“We are studying Iran’s response, but the bottom line is that it is not at all encouraging,” a senior US official said. “Based on their answer we appear to be moving backwards.”
The US official wouldn’t detail the contents of the text, but a European diplomat also shared the negative view of Iran’s response. The diplomat told Politico that Iran’s answer was “negative and not reasonable.”
It’s not yet clear if the US view on the response means that the Biden administration will end the talks on reviving the Iran deal, known as the JCPOA. The negotiations have dragged out throughout Biden’s presidency as he has refused to lift all Trump-era sanctions on Iran.
The Biden administration’s apparent rejection of the response could be related to the pressure it has been under from Israel and hawks in Congress to abandon talks with Iran.
Before Iran submitted its response, US officials said that they were “closer” to a deal after Iran made several concessions. Based on recent media reports, the only outstanding issues were related to guarantees for if the US withdraws from the JCPOA by reimposing sanctions, as it did in 2018.
Iran was also looking for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to close its inquiry into traces of uranium at undeclared nuclear sites. A US official said that Iran dropped its demand to end the IAEA investigation in order to revive the deal, but Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said this week that without settling the issue, “talking about an agreement would be meaningless.”
It has taken US 2 years and can not guarantee that the next administration will not revoke the deal. Everyone knows that the influence of Israeli lobby on US administration will make the likelihood of fair negotiations an impossible task. So no guarantees, no removal of Iran’s special forces from terrorist list, non removal of Trump Era sanctions nor the removal of old accusations that Iran had traces of Uranium even though that case was closed in 2015.
Who in their right mind (Iranian or any sane country) would accept such a deal by US who walked away from the original deal?
This failure also exposes IAEA’s bias toward Iran and the flaws with the whole NPT and its rule.
In effect, the JCPOA’s failure will unravel the entire commitment and responsibility in maintaining nuclear safe guard and trust among nations. Western bias toward Iran while ignoring Israel is with an estimated 200 nukes has shown the real face of Westetn Hypocrisy.
That’s an important point about the trust among nations engendered by the NPT, which first started unraveling because the nuclear weapons-holding states dragged their feet on sharing nuclear energy technology, as they had committed to do. This is all Iran ever wanted. The US did this even while looking the other way as Israeli intelligence robbed them blind and developed an undeclared weapons stockpile. The next break became when a country that did share technology, Canada, allowed India to develop a plutonium bomb based on CANDU reactor technology. India’s archenemy, Pakistan, followed suit. The difference in outcomes of Libya’s relinquishment of nuclear technology versus North Korea’s maintenance of same is obvious to all. Only when the nuclear weapons-holding states fully commit to the terms of the NPT without prejudice will we see any change in the continued unraveling.

It’s incredulous to think that an agreement is not in both countries’ interests. But then why sign a deal when others can scupper it? Nations go to war over interests, but history shows that states are forced into conflicts that will ultimately obliterate those interests.

I’m sticking with my prediction that the US uses massive conventional bombing on the excuse Israel would otherwise use nukes, and besides which the US is headed into the ditch anyway, and then we add Israel to the congressional and presidential oaths of office and the pledge of allegiance, and replace the fifty stars on the flag with a star of David.
Kind of hard to comment since we don’t know the details of “moving backwards” or “negative and not reasonable” or “not at all encouraging”. But since Iran was the only one in compliance when King Donald withdrew the US from the deal, it’s safe to assume that no matter what Iran’s response might have been Israel’s wishes prevail once again.

The deal is not possible. Iran does not want it on US terms, and US will not have it any other way. The deal is not about the bomb but about the control of Iran. Iran signed 25 year deal with China and 20 year deal with Russia. It became the ninth decision making member of SCO. If US cannot get a meaningful control of Iran — what is the point. Some say US can swallow pride and do it for the sake of getting oil and gas.
But is it so? But with Iran-Saudi relationship all but normalized, and rock solid Chinese and Russian support — why even hope of having a “generous” deal with Iran by enticing it into energy deal to undermine Russia or OPEC+? That will not happen.
Thus LESS likely deal with US. Unless desparate EU pleads for a less perfect deal. Why would EU want it, knowing full well that Russia and China have higher influence in Iranian energ policy?
For the sake of appearances. To tell angry electorate that hope is on the horison. Even if it is not.
The deal revival need a pause… Let this winter passes by and EU would freeze to death, then in spring the EU wakes up from hibernation to face its reality…!

It would obviously be reasonable for Iran to seek more airtight guarantees for the day if/when Donald Trump reoccupies the White House and immediately begins a war. He could be in power in just 27 months. As for the IAEA stuff Iran is likely still flexible, at least according to Trita Parsi.

Antony Blinken goes back and forth with Israel about this and basically says what they think is what matters.
There was never an intent to make the “Iran deal” a reality – even though it strips Iran of nuclear power and forces them to burn coal and oil for heat, which fills their cities with smoke. They had to sacrifice their health so their economy could survive. But not even this is allowed by Blinken, who only listens to Israel.
The Obama administration never had any intention to keep to the deal, and then Trump made his move. All of the sanctions are cruel and illegal, and Iran should not be “punished” for its independence and sovereignty which the USA pretends it cares about when it is an “ally” like Ukraine!!
