House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has invited other members of Congress to join her in a visit to Taiwan next month, signaling that she still plans to make the trip despite the fact that the US military thinks it risks provoking China.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Wednesday that Pelosi invited him and Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), who chairs the committee.
McCaul said he couldn’t go to Taiwan due to a prior engagement but expressed support for the trip. “Any member that wants to go, should. It shows political deterrence to President Xi,” he said. “But she should also pay attention to the military if it’s going to cause a blowback and escalate things.”
McFaul’s comments are the first on-the-record confirmation that Pelosi is planning to visit Taiwan. Pelosi has declined to discuss her travel plans, citing security risks. McFaul said that the trip is planned for the congressional recess in August but didn’t provide exact dates. It’s not clear yet if Meeks plans to join Pelosi for the trip.
The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that if Pelosi goes to Taiwan, the US will increase the movement of its forces in the region. Officials said fighter jets, ships, and other assets would likely provide protection for the military plane that would be carrying Pelosi.
US officials think it’s unlikely that China would respond by taking action against Pelosi’s plane and expect the response to consist of flying planes near Taiwan or sailing ships in the area. Either way, Pelosi traveling to the island clearly creates a major risk, which could lead to an accident between the two militaries.
China has repeatedly warned that it will have a strong response to Pelosi’s trip, something the Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated on Wednesday. ” If the US side insists on making the visit and challenges China’s red line, it will be met with resolute countermeasures. The US must assume full responsibility for any serious consequence arising thereof,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.
The Washington Post recently reported that the Biden administration fears Pelosi’s trip could spark a major crisis across the Taiwan Strait and said officials are warning her not to go. The administration maintains that they can’t stop Pelosi from visiting the island, which China doesn’t believe.

Now we are sailing an entire aircraft carrier group into the Taiwan Strait just so Pelosi can have her photo-op moment.
So much room for miscalculation and war to start. Biden and Pentagon have both warned against it…But Pelosi goes and invite a bunch of Republican hawks? What on earth are these people thinking? And even outside the warzone, a war over Taiwan would immediate devastate the world economy and make this “record inflation” look like peanuts not to mention the huge loss of life that would occur on both sides of the Strait. And that is if we’re lucky that no one presses the nuclear button.

I thought about many tactics China might do if Nancy does decide to travel to Taiwan. Moments before touchdown China might launch missiles at every airport landing strip in Taiwan.

They could force the plane down before it reaches Taiwan or prevent it from landing near Taiwan.
Depending on China’s ECM capability, if it’s anything like the Russian’s, they could just electronically shut down the airport.
Personally I suspect they might just send another huge wave of jet fighters into the ADIZ as they have been doing just as her plane approaches, just to show Pelosi how vulnerable she is. It’s what I would do. And maybe keep them in the ADIZ as long as she’s in Taiwan.

It helps to take attention away from her husband’s business dealings. And as old as she is, she will not have to pay the consequences for her bellicosity. We do need another theater of war desperately before the mid term election, Ukraine does not look good, Europe, the EU, is crumbling. Exactly why I suspect China will send a huge wave of fighter jets into the ADIZ when Pelosi arrives. They will demonstrate that a handful of US jets are zero threat to China. They can also put one of their new aircraft carriers and their new “super destroyer” into the area, as well. China can conduct demonstrations just as well as the US can. Some years back a Chinese sub surfaced in the middle of a US carrier group without being detected. Reproducing that would be another nice lesson for the US.

Pelosi going to China shows just how progressive the democratic party isn’t. The curtain, if it ever needed to be pulled back on these right wing, racist elements within the democratic party, has now been done. This trip is Mike Pompeo type of stuff. The bluster of Ro Khanna saying that “those people can’t set Nancy Pelosi’s travel schedule.” And he’s considered a sensitive progressive?? A military escort for a Pelosi trip? What could she possibly add to a conversation between China and the US in terms of diplomacy? Her only success has been to profit off her insider knowledge of future government contracts. Children have the wheel of the car.
While some are lamenting that there are no safeguards to prevent miscalculations with China as there were during the Cold War, the Biden Administration is bent on provoking China as much as they can. Not sure I understand the policy.
China has clearly committed itself to do something in response to her trip. There are too many Americans who would like to provoke something with China, for various reasons, but all rather like what happened with Ukraine.
Also, far too many American leaders are prone to self delusion and underestimating any opponent.
However, China may be too careful to be manipulated and used in that way. It may be careful to be provoked into doing only something it wants to do anyway, something for which it needs an excuse.
What does China want to do, that it has been holding back from doing to avoid initiating trouble? Do they really want to “invade Taiwan?”
Perhaps they’d like the chance to demonstrate their ability to close its air space at will.
Perhaps they’d like the chance to take a new direction with North Korea, or Iran, or both.

In my opinion, the US shouldn’t have a “side” in any dispute between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China. Simply not our business.
On the other hand, if Regime A tells regime B that someone from Regime B visiting regime C is a “provocation,” the only reasonable response is “well, then, Regime A is obviously run by spoiled, petulant children; we should hand out candy bars to them and tell them to go play and come back when they grow the hell up.”
China and Russia are “grown up” and they are kicking US ass economically and militarily, and it is the US who is whining about which is why the US is using Ukraine and Taiwan to start wars with Russia and China which the US stupidly thinks it can win.

You are correct that the US has no business in the China-Taiwan dispute – nor the Ukraine-Russia dispute.
Its more like Person A tells Person B that you are stepping on my toes and Person B responds he is not that heavy and he is not gonna move because A is not really bothered but is being petulant. Person A for sure is not gonna distribute candy but a smack in the face.
