The Biden administration on Friday took the step to directly sanction Russian President Vladimir Putin over his assault on Ukraine.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the decision was made after consultations with the US’s European allies. The US, the EU, and Britain will all impose sanctions on Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The Treasury Department detailed the sanctions and said they apply to Putin, Lavrov, and other members of Russia’s Security Council. The sanctions freeze any assets they have in the US and ban Americans from making transactions with them.
The US typically doesn’t sanction world leaders it has diplomatic relations with, although there are a few exceptions. But sanctions on heads of state are usually a precursor to the severing of ties, stricter economic sanctions, or military intervention.
Leaders the US has sanctioned in the past include North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and Moammar Gadhafi, the late Libyan leader. During the Trump administration, the US sanctioned Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as part of a broader economic war against the two nations.
The US announced sanctions this week on major Russian banks, Russia’s sovereign debt, and Russian “elites.” President Biden said the purpose of the sanctions is to “limit Russia’s ability to do business in dollars, euros, pounds, and yen to be part of the global economy.” Notably, the US and its allies have yet to try and ban Russia from the SWIFT payment system.
Judging by Putin’s recent actions and rhetoric, there’s little reason to think sanctions will deter his attack on Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Friday that the sanctions will cause problems for Russia but that they can be overcome. “Undoubtedly there will be problems, but they will not be insurmountable,” he said.
History shows that economic sanctions do little to change the target government but can cause significant harm to the civilian population.
Joe Biden has failed, he could have stopped this war before it started, he is getting some bad advice or he is just insane for letting this thing go this far, lots of people are getting killed Joe, call Putin up, find a way to stop this thing before its to late, it won’t hurt to swallow your pride, Putin wants a way out also, he will cooperate.
I hope that you are right Bella…
LOL Putin couldn’t care less. Peskov is right. Alexander Mercouris has been analyzing the sanctions for months and believes they won’t be significant impediments to future Russian economic growth.
Western powers have realised Russia is largely immune to sanctions

The US/Anglosphere is more likely to spark bank runs against their banks as every nation even remotely fearful of coming under US crosshairs pulls their money.
At the very least, the US, UK and Canada have ceased to be attractive locations to bank more money for everyone else in the world.
Oddly enough, crashing the Western banking system is in line with the WEF Reset.
The only problem is, the rest of the world has banking systems.
Yeh they sanctioned my grand dad s well lol.
What morons, if they knew sanctions would’ve worked, they would’ve done it 10years ago. Let the west put up the iron curtain. With gas cut off from Europe, the people will heavy price and will lead to more unrest.
Washington is used to talking to small countries like Panama, Iraq, Libya etc. where you give them ultimatums or impose sanctions. Heck, Iraq and Libya we just accused them and bombed them.
Its about time that Biden realizes that Russia is neither of the small countries.
They might be a giant gas station and have a lilliputian economy but, they have nuclear weapons.
Sanctions is a feely goody thingy, that is all. Has Biden and European vassals really thought it thru what effects a Russian crippled economy would have?
They tried it with Germany after WWI
Russia has been Rehearsing Sanction Resistance for years and most likely getting hints from allies like Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea and China…!
