Vice President JD Vance on Sunday said that Americans who are opposed to another war in the Middle East shouldn’t worry because President Trump isn’t “dumb.”
The vice president made the comments in an interview with NBC News, where he justified and defended President Trump’s bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, which was carried out without congressional approval, making it illegal under the Constitution.
“I certainly empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East. I understand the concern, but the difference is, back then, we had dumb presidents, and now we have a president who actually knows how to accomplish America’s national security objectives,” Vance said.
Vance claimed the conflict will not be a “long drawn out thing” as the Trump administration is insisting that it wants negotiations with Iran. But the administration disrupted previous diplomacy by backing Israel’s attacks on Iran and then by launching its own airstrikes this weekend, giving Iran no reason to trust the US.
Vance also said that the US will work to “permanently” dismantle Iran’s nuclear program. He repeatedly claimed in the interview that Iran had a “nuclear weapons program” despite US intelligence saying there was no evidence Tehran was moving toward a nuclear bomb before Israel’s attack.
