Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza in recent days as the Israeli military has launched a new phase of its assault on the Strip, dubbed “Gideon’s Chariots.”
On Sunday, the IDF announced it was conducting “extensive ground operations” in northern and southern Gaza, and medical sources told Al Jazeera that at least 144 Palestinians had been killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza since dawn.
The Palestinian news agency WAFA described overnight Israeli attacks as “one of the bloodiest nights since the beginning of the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza.” The news agency reported that at least 20 were killed and 100 were wounded by attacks on tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in the al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis.
The purpose of Israel’s new offensive is to capture more territory and flatten every remaining building in Gaza with the goal of a full military occupation. Israeli officials have said another goal is to “concentrate” the Palestinian civilian population into a tiny area in southern Gaza, although a leaked Israeli military proposal suggests another plan could be in the works.
Under the proposal, which was obtained by The Sunday Times, the IDF would force all civilians into three strips of land in the northern, central, and southern parts of Gaza. The civilian areas will be separated by four IDF-occupied military zones that civilians aren’t allowed to enter.
The Times report said the Israeli military could carry out the plan if a ceasefire deal with Hamas is not reached in the coming days. According to Axios, US envoy Steve Witkoff presented a proposal for a 45 to 60-day ceasefire and the release of 10 Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
The proposal also involves Israel making a commitment to work toward a permanent ceasefire, but Israel has violated a similar deal before. Hamas has also maintained that it will not agree to a deal without an upfront commitment to a ceasefire. CNN reported that Hamas had agreed to release nine hostages in exchange for a two-month ceasefire, but the report was quickly denied by a Hamas official.
What the article omits is that the ceasefire must be under Israel's conditions, since they have the upper hand and winning this mess that Hamas created purposely and voluntarily on October 7th, 2023. Israel is not going to give Hamas even the appearance of one small victory for what they have done, and I don't blame them.

The continued occupation of territory outside the borders set in that 1947 UN Partition Resolution should have been good for arrest warrants starting in 2015 when the state of Palestine joined the ICC and that territory came under its jurisdiction. I mean, maybe a 30-day grace period to allow time for Israel to withdraw to within its borders, but pretty quickly.
Right next door- Syria with 12 million displaced and over 500,000 civilian casualties, there would be some welcome relief if those most responsible for the heinous and barbaric crimes committed against civilians during this conflict were held to account by the ICC.
Second, Arab leadership, including Palestinians, rejected the 1947 UN Partition Resolution (Resolution 181) for Palestine, and chose war instead and they lost. Egypt then occupied Gaza and Jordan occupied the West Bank. They tried war again in 1967 to gain everything, and again lost, and this time under new management.
Is Syria a member state of the ICC? Are any of those accused of war crimes in Syria from ICC member states? If either, the ICC has jurisdiction. If neither, it doesn’t.
Arab rejection of UNR 181 does not nullify UNR 181 any more than my rejection of the speed limit near my house nullifies that speed limit. The only real consequence of acceptance or rejection of UNR 181 is that the Israeli regime agreed to the borders set in it as a condition of UN membership, since when those borders remain unchanged.
At present, Israeli forces occupy an ICC member state’s territory and are therefore under ICC jurisdiction for crimes related to that occupation — just as Hamas members are under ICC jurisdiction for crimes they commit anywhere, even non-ICC-member-state Israel, because they are nationals of an ICC member state.

One bizarre aspect of US discourse on Gaza is Israel admits they intend to starve Gaza and destroy it all so that residents are either forced to flee or live in small "concentrated" camps (paid for by US workers).
