Ukraine and the US have reached an agreement on a minerals deal after the US backed off on one of its more contentious demands, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
The report said that the US had dropped the demand for it to have the right to $500 billion in potential revenue from Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and other natural resources, an idea that Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky has publicly rejected.
The agreement, which was finalized on Monday, will establish a fund where Ukraine will put 50% of its proceeds from rare earth minerals and other resources, including oil and gas, and the fund would invest in projects in Ukraine. The activity of Naftogaz, Ukraine’s largest oil and gas company, and other state-owned enterprises that currently fund the Ukrainian government will be excluded from the fund.

It’s unclear what percentage of the fund will be owned by the US as those details will be worked out in follow-on agreements. The deal also doesn’t include explicit security guarantees from the US, which was one of Zelensky’s major demands.
“The minerals agreement is only part of the picture. We have heard multiple times from the US administration that it’s part of a bigger picture,” Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine’s deputy prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, who led the negotiations, told the FT.
Ukrainian officials told the FT that the agreement has been approved by Ukraine’s justice, economy, and foreign ministers, and they’re hoping Zelensky will go to Washington for a signing ceremony and a meeting with Trump. Later on Tuesday, Trump said that Zelensky was expected to visit the White House on Friday.
“This will be a chance for the president to discuss what the bigger picture is. And then after it, we will be able to think of the next steps,” a Ukrainian official told the FT.
Zelensky’s rejection of the Trump administration’s initial rare earth offer was one of the reasons why President Trump lashed out at the Ukrainian leader and called him a “dictator” for not holding elections. Trump was also frustrated by Zelensky’s complaints about not being invited to the talks between the US and Russia that were held in Saudi Arabia last week.
Feb 20, 2025 Putin: Russia Has Never Walked Away from any Peace Deal with Ukraine. I'm Ready to Speak with Trump

Fascinating. I've never heard an American president talk off-hand with such intelligence.
If he don't stop the killing, he is no better than Biden. We will see.
A week after Trump described Zelensky as a "dictator" and blamed Ukraine – not Russia – for starting the war, Ukraine has agreed the terms of a major minerals deal with the US.
Without confirming that an agreement had been reached, Trump said on Tuesday that in return for the deal Ukraine would get "the right to fight on".
"They're very brave," he told reporters, but "without the United States and its money and its military equipment, this war would have been over in a very short period of time".
Asked whether supplies of US equipment and ammunition to Ukraine would continue, he said: "Maybe until we have a deal with Russia… We need to have a deal, otherwise it's going to continue."
"We want to get that money back," he said. "We're helping the country through a very very big problem… but the American taxpayer now is going to get their money back plus."
There would be a need for "some form of peacekeeping" in Ukraine following any peace deal, Trump added, but that would need to be "acceptable to everyone".

Agreeing in principle without nailing down the thorniest details is not really agreeing to anything at all.
Yes, there's the small matter of military defeat and destruction.
It may be MAGALANDIA is fooled by these antics, Putin certainly isn't, and will serenely continue to deplete US power, home & abroad.
I wouldn’t say that the Russian mililtary has been defeated or destroyed. Its three years of abject military failure has outed Russia as a third-rate conventional military power, but it’s still in the field and fighting.
Assertions. Not many ex-military I've read agree with your assessment.
Keep’n the faith were admirable, weren’t the wherein so squalid.
To be fair, Iraqi insurgents / Al Qaeda, and the ragtag Talibanese demonstrated that, after the Shock & Awe is over, the US Military is wildly and ridiculously over-rated, itself.
Did not Trump tell the EU to fund rebuilding Ukraine,
what is left of it. After all the Europeans started all of this. They did it Biden had nothing to do with it. Americans are parasites, blood suckers, then they leave and impose sanctions on Ukraine for having lost the war for them.
Geo W & Obama started it with the Maiden Coup. By rights, the US owes huge reparations to Russia, and should be required to restore Ukraine.
So true, they lost this war big time too, and as always, they walk away and make others pay the bill.
… and clean up their mess. You’ve gone to the essential hatefulness of our elite.
And, oh by the way, the present UkraNazi government is not legally constituted.
"…and there will be 10% for the big guy"
BlackRock can handle it, they are ready.
Feb 25, 2025 CNN ADMITS Ukraine War Is All About MONEY!
On occasion during the course of the Ukraine War corporate media mouthpieces like Brian Stelter, Joe Scarborough and Erin Burnett have revealed the truth about the war — specifically that it’s all about money and channeling U.S. taxpayer dollars into the pockets of war profiteering weapons manufacturers.

It sounds like they will treat Ukraine as Clinton did to Russia under Yeltsin, robbing the wealth of the nation while the people starve. Zelensky is in no way prepared to deal with grifters of Trump's caliber.
Trump is a conman and is all about making a deal about money. Zelensky is a grifter but not big enough for the American grifter.
I think the Ukrainian oligarchs make trump look like an amateur in comparison. Those grifters have managed to take a country of 52 million people, with immense resources of every kind, and turn it into a ruined semi-country of maybe 28 million, with shut down factories and mines, and now the devastation of three years of war to boot. All while making themselves immensely rich in the process.
You said it well, you are so right.
The US dropped demands for 500 billion potential Revenue boosting hopes for stronger ties & long-term security commandments. Zelenski & Parliament voted new law. What is New law? Ukraine's parliment including the opposition voted unanimously to affirm Zelinski's mandate that no elections can be held because of war starter by Putin & general elections will beheld as soon as war ends." – Dina, Military Summary Channel
