Hungarian officials have said they’re still pushing for a Christmas ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine despite a rejection from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he had proposed a Christmas truce, but Zelensky shot it down. Orban said on Friday that Russia had agreed to the proposal, and he thought it was still possible.
“One of the parties agreed, and the other apparently refused, but the possibility is still there,” Orban said, according to Russia’s TASS news agency. “Let’s stop the war, which has led to nothing, for at least a few days.”
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto also said Hungary was still pushing for a ceasefire and that Russian officials responded “positively” to the idea.
“We told President Vladimir Putin about that and informed several Russian government officials, who responded positively and openly, showing their willingness to consider the proposal and negotiate,” Szijjarto said, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.
“Unfortunately, the Ukrainian president rejected this opportunity for talks, but we hope that common sense and humanism will somehow prevail and as many people as possible will be able to celebrate Christmas in quiet, calm, and safety at home in eastern Europe,” he added.
During the first year of the war, Russia proposed a truce for Christmas, which is celebrated by Russian Orthodox Christians on January 7, but the idea was rejected by both Ukraine and the US.
Zelensky wisely rejected it because every time Russia agrees to a truce, it uses it to attack Ukraine when their guard is down.
It's a shame some sects of the "antiwar" movement are abstaining from criticising Russia or its "interesting" conduct in Ukraine
I'm glad you say that because I think about the same. I will not be surprised if Russia sends large amount of funds/donations to this site through 3rd party donors.
It's too suspicious. The name is antiwar and not one single peace activist shows up to honestly speak up against all wars. Putin and other dictators are protected here.
They have been documented to do such before, so yeah
Well, I'm a peace activist who shows up to honestly speak up against all wars. I've not endorsed any side in any war for decades. I've just opposed the wars, and the regimes conducting them.
It would be nice if Russia sent large amounts of funds/donations to the site, but I've never seen any evidence that that's happened. And seeing as how the site has been investigated by the FBI, etc., I suspect that if it had happened we'd have heard it shouted from the rooftops.
Biden/CIA
Trump. New/Old boss, same as always.
Please provide an example because the rest of the world knows of none.
Can Orbán stop trying to solve Ukraine's problems?
Hes not very certified in foreign affairs
It was all the certified experts who caused this war and refuse to end it. Orban is the only western leader trying to make peace and other leaders hate him for trying. They use their media outlets and army of paid on-line trolls to mock him and anyone promoting peace. Hungary and other nations are likely to leave the EU and join the prospering east as soon as Russian troops reach their borders.
Russia is not prospering, nor is Belarus.
Hungary is a pathetic lackey who is ruinining our joint European Vision of peace and stability.
Hungary is not advocating for peace, they are advocating for Ukraines’ surrender.
And so long as I live, Russia will never border us from Lviv Oblast, Kalaningrad is more than enough border.
It’s projection. Merkel admitted that Minsk was a ruse for Ukraine to do what Ukraine is claiming Russia will do.

Belousov: Russia must be prepared for conflict with NATO in Europe in the next 10 years
Russia should be fully prepared in case of a military conflict with NATO in Europe within the next decade, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said at an extended meeting of the department's board.
"The activities of the Ministry of Defense are built taking into account the following key factors… ensuring full readiness for any development of the situation in the medium term. Including a possible military conflict with NATO in Europe in the next decade," Belousov emphasized.
According to him, the risk of such a development of the situation is not excluded in connection with the decisions taken at the NATO summit in July, as well as US doctrinal documents.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said NATO countries are forming strike groups of troops near Russia's borders, and the number of American troops in Europe has already exceeded 100,000."
After skimming the Anti-war piece, it's rational to conclude that a ceasefire and peace agreement are irrelevant if the Russians are on a perpetual war footing and the distrust with NATO won't abate.
Compare the spending of the US and Russia on their militaries each year and THEN tell me Russia is militaristic and aggressive.
Russia is militaristic and aggressive
budget does not determine aggressiveness but I'm pretty sure, invading neighboring countries, killing their people, taking their land, making nuclear threats, and telling Ukrainians their identity and country does not exist, is pretty fucking aggressive.
So I'm telling you, your Russia is really militaristic and aggressive.
If you support Russia you gotta act the cult
Yes, yes, Russia has 800 military bases circumventing the world.
OMG! Russia is everywhere. /s
The roots of the dispute is the Christian schism between the Orthodox and Catholic churches, with C. Hitchens having correctly noted that Nazism is the political expression of the European Catholic right. So central is this to the conflict that Ukraine has banned Orthodox churches from the country, including the 1000 yr old native one.
The two countries do not have the same liturgical calendar/Christmas. This seems a basic "how" of it all I have yet to see any article mention. Is the proposal a one-day ceasefire for Catholic Christmas or two days split by two weeks of fighting or 16 or so days of ceasefire? Seems the type of thing someone might mention.
Have you heard of occhams razor
Putin should take notice as to what happened with during the "truce" in Lebanon.
