An official with the North Atlantic alliance says the bloc has exceeded its goal of placing 300,000 soldiers on standby for a potential war with Russia. The announcement comes as NATO members significantly escalate support for Ukraine, bringing the alliance closer to direct war with Moscow.
On Thursday, a NATO official told AFP that member states have 300,000 soldiers ready to deploy for a conflict with Russia in the space of 30 days. “The offers on the table from allies comfortably exceed the 300,000 that we set,” the official said. “Those are forces which allies have said to us, ‘They are available to you as of now at that level of readiness.’”
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said the number of NATO soldiers at high readiness is significantly greater than the 300,000 benchmark. “Allies are offering forces to NATO’s command at a scale not seen in decades. Today we have 500,000 troops at high readiness across all domains, significantly more than the goal that was set at the 2022 Madrid Summit,” he said on Friday.
The alliance hit its goal as its members significantly ratcheted up support for Kiev in recent weeks. The US and several other nations also recently gave a green light for Ukraine to use their weapons to strike targets inside Russia.
The Netherlands and Denmark plan to supply Kiev with F-16s in the coming months, and say the advanced aircraft could be used to bomb Russia. Stoltenberg added that he welcomes the policy shift, and said it should not be considered an escalation by Russia.
However, the Kremlin has issued stern warnings to the West about any F-16 transfer, with Russian officials explaining the US-made warplane could carry nuclear weapons and present a strategic threat to Moscow. Ukraine plans to store the F-16s on the territory of other NATO states, and Russia has threatened to strike those facilities.
Additionally, some members of NATO are preparing to send their own troops into Ukraine to train local forces. Earlier this month, President Emmanuel Macron said France was working to “finalize a coalition” of NATO countries that are willing to send troops. Moscow has stated that any French trainers deployed to Ukraine would be legitimate targets of the Russian military.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently blasted Western leaders for placing the world on the brink of a larger war. “Ultimately, the selfishness and arrogance of Western states led to the current extremely dangerous state of affairs,” he explained in a speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday. “We have come dangerously close to the point of no return. Calls to inflict strategic defeat on Russia, possessing the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons, demonstrate the extreme recklessness of Western politicians.”

It is tragic that Putin still believes Russia can achieve a military victory over Ukraine.
"Achieving a military" victory is meaningless. You start a war to achieve political goals through military means. In this case, such goals could include:
– Developing a buffer area in Ukraine,
– Ensuring a land corridor to Crimea,
– Making sure Ukraine never joins Nato
– Ending the Donbas attacks
etc.
Russia is on its way of achieving most of these …
You missed one… Live capturing the illegitimate zelboy…!
Putin has already achieved a military victory over Ukraine. All Ukraine has left is terrorism. Russia has not even attacked or destroyed their Parliament building. If Ukraine wants to plsy that game they might find that Russia can up the pain waaaay more than feckless welfare case Ukraine ever dreamed…..!!!!!!
Just be patient. I have seen this all before. Denial is a stage after an imperial power loses an asymmetric war. Reality is coming for Putin or his successor as it did for Nixon and DeGaulle.
Are you then under the impression that the west can, for a third time, try to beat Russia in their home front?
No. The Ukrainians are kicking Russian ass on the Ukrainians’ home front.
Doesn’t appear so.
What is tragic is what the headline of this article says. And what is even more tragic than that is if negotiations were allowed to continue on the initialed (BY BOTH PARTIES) draft of the peace deal of 2022, none of this would be happening. But, like our MSM, you like to fixate on Putin.
Peace was denied by the U.S. of Atrocities and Ungreat Kingdom.
No final agreement was ever reached. The negotiations were hopeful, but Ukraine understandably did not trust Russia to adhere to the agreement without secuirty guarantees that NATO was not ready to give and that Russia was unlikely to agree to since Ukraine wanted the equivalent of Article 5 status without article 5 obligations. The issue of Crimea was unresolved and neither government formally accepted the draft.
Everyone, including Zelensky and US/NATO underestimated the determination of Ukraine to effectively resist and when the extent of the Russian debacle at Kyiv became known, Ukraine became less willing to make concessions.
You are failing to appreciate how the Russian annexation of Crimea and the invasion of February 2022 galvanized Ukrainian resentment of Russian chauvinism into an implacable will to resist Russian bullying.
No agreement was ever reached because the West told Ukraine they weren't ready to negotiate with Putin. But I guess that's a minor issue with you. Both sides initialed the draft to the peace proposal. That is huge and you're downplaying it to fit your narrative. To get to the point of an initialed draft, the top priority issues have been agreed upon in principle. Ukraine had agreed to neutrality. Everything else you say is pure speculation. And your last two paragraphs are completely irrelevant and more speculation on your part.
You keep repeating that US and UK deliberately provoked Putin to invade Ukraine. I keep agreeing. But you are missing the point that Putin’s invasion was stupid, counterproductive and futile. Russian chauvinists and many of the contributors and commenters on this site don’t understand the 750 years of history to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict or the principles of asymmetric wars of national resistance. It is a lot like the US and Soviet invasions of Afghanistan. I don’t like the Mujaihideen or the Taliban but they are indigenous groups with popular support. They persevered and won. The Ukrainians simply will not surrender their territory. They are highly motivated. The Russians are not. The Ukrainians are fighting in their homeland. The Russians are not. Even if the Russians defeat the Ukrainian army and even if Zelensky surrenders,, Russia will be an occupying power fighting a guerrilla war in hostile territory.
Putin is proving again the limits of military power in an asymmetric war that is determined by hearts and minds, not force of arms. Eventually the Russians will withdraw from Ukraine. Wait and see.
What I keep repeating is that Russia had a leader that was willing to withdraw every time you say Russia needs a leader willing to withdraw. And that was when Ukraine was whole. You then go back in history and ignore that this could have been over before there would have been a need for any kind of resistance. And again, Ukraine would have been whole.
You can believe whatever you want about what could have been two years ago. Ukraine is persevering through a war of national resistance that will not end until Putin or his successor withdraws from Ukraine. The Ukrainians will not give up.
Putin led his country into a forever war.
The war will end when Putin or his successor withdraws to Russia.
I only bring it up because you insist on bringing up irrelevant history. If Putin was willing to withdraw, and those initialed drafts say he was, then your insistence that his invasion was strictly imperialism doesn't hold water. And given the location of Ukraine and NATO's belligerence, the Russians won't give in regardless of if Putin, or his successor is in charge. And once more, I don't say that because I'm rooting it on, I say it because I believe it to be so.
i think that Russia already achieved their goal of securing Crimea away from uncle sam hands. it doesn't really appear that Russia is trying to take over the entirety of Ukraine. really, Russia could have bombed Ukraine into a puddle of mud ten times over if they had wanted to but for some reason they have not done so.
figure that shit out man.
puddle of mud(d)
I like how you snuck the name (almost) of a rock band into your comment.
You have never beaten them in hundreds of years and you aren’t going to beat them now.
Ha ha ha ha ha … these are the same Nato nations that needed US to hold their hand when taking on the dreaded Libyans of Khaddafi?
Even the Brits and the French have minimal real troop strength for outside their area work. The only real armies in Nato are US and Turkey.
Well, the French have a bunch of troops that have been kicked out of their former colonies in Africa which aren't doing anything . . .
A completely useless conflict for the benefit of $ auodi and tuourkiey, and at the expense of any normal sane human on the planet.
Rich people want Russian resources and are willing to send regular folks to die to get more.
Oh baby; will you die for me.
I don't think many of these regular folks are particularly eager to die for Ukraine. It is much easier to have a small yellow-blue flag as a profile picture on social media where to get mad at Putin, to publicly profess faith in propaganda truth and type 'slava ukraini' a lot, but keep it at that. Not too much of those possess the necessary enthusiasm to help solve the Ukrainian shortages of manpower in reality. However stupid they may be, but not thàt stupid.
We, and Germany, are making a big deal about the reporter being held by Russia, and is to be prosecuted for being a spy. When I first read about his arrest,I asked myself,"what was he doing wandering around the Urals?". Upon reading about the Urals, I learned it is loaded with resources we would like to get our hands on. According to Wikipedia: The Ural Mountains contain about 48 species of economically valuable ores and minerals. Eastern regions are rich in chalcopyrite, nickel oxide, gold, platinum, chromite and magnetite ores, as well as in coal (Chelyabinsk Oblast), bauxite, talc, fireclay and abrasives. The Western Urals contain deposits of coal, oil, natural gas (Ishimbay and Krasnokamsk areas) and potassium salts. Both slopes are rich in bituminous coal and lignite, and the largest deposit of bituminous coal is in the north (Pechora field). The specialty of the Urals is precious and semi-precious stones, such as emerald, amethyst, aquamarine, jasper, rhodonite, malachite and diamond.
And?
Seeing as how you were able to find that out from Wikipedia, why would a “spy” need to be sent to find it out firsthand?
I would venture abject stupidity and cluelessness as a first pass, at least when it comes down to the clowns running the WH.
The kid-reporter was waltzing around Russia asking incredibly nosy, stupid questions on sensitive topics, as if he were begging to be arrested..
Wikipedia has a reputation of disclosing false or inaccurate information. Perhaps they had to sent a spy to verify if indeed it was true.
Everyone in the world knew that the Urals were rich in various resources long before Wikipedia … or the Internet … or computers … existed.
Mr. Bixby's claim, if true, makes a much more plausible case for espionage — although actual weapons production figures versus regime claims are also a plausible news item. But a foreign "journalist" asking similar questions of similar people in the US might also expect to be arrested as a "spy."
Sorry Thomas, I was being facetious.
And I was being worn down, as is often the case.
I don't know the truth about Gershkovic's case. But I don't think there are too many interested in the truth about Gershkovic's case. His tragedy is perhaps, he's way too useful to want to know the truth about his case.
Germany is not known for valuing truth and possessing the necessary curiousness to that effect very much. I've got a pipeline and a genocide to offer as evidence for that assertion.
He had managed to get to a city where travel is restricted, called the 'metallurgical capital of Russia, and was trying to get production information from employees of the tank factory and the country's largest missile manufacturer. Not the normal beat of a Wall Street Journal reporter, the last I knew.

Anyone else notice that Russia may have lowered the intensity of its attacks before and during the "
PeaceWar Summit?"Exactly opposite of the crime minister…!
How do I go about noticing that someone may – have …. anything?
Considering that any news out of Ukraine is of dubious quality at best I'd tend to look at who's making the claim first.
There will be no war. If there is it won't last long. The public(in the West) will not accept the casualties. The military is a government career, with great benefits. With all the survivor benefits we pay out, we cannot afford WW1/2 type casualties. Trip over a tent-peg, and get $4000 a month!
The U.S. has never had a war on its lands the likes of WWI and WWII.
These people are batshit crazy. I for one am not interested in watching the extermination of the human race, though based on the level of stupidity among the aholes in charge of the western nations, I'm this close to changing my mind.
In a nuclear war scenario, you can amass 2 million combat ready soldiers, but in thirty minutes they'll all be reduced to radioactive dust – idiots.
And anyway who wouldn't want to rule over a nuclear wasteland?
The War Party really seems to want to march on Moscow. How else do they think ‘Pootin’ will be defeated ?
Touché!
… trouble is The Empire is a Warfare State, like Sparta (stop laughing!), loss in the Ukraine effectively signifies the end of Imperial Washington.
As this is announced an alien family driving by sightseeing hear this and dad yells; roll up the windows and lock the doors we took a WRONG turn..
NATO is not going to war with Russia because if NATO had the defense production to go to war with Russia they would have supplied it to Ukraine instead of sending them drips and drabs. It's going to take the MIC 3 years (if not more) to ramp up 155mm production to the level Russia is producing today.
The headline is wrong – it's 300K on standby per link, not 1/2M.
And since I'm not a military analyst, the link also says:
Paper Tigering…!
I'm gonna see your Paper Tiger and raise you a Dick Measure.
The Russian stealthy nuclear-powered sub 'Kazan' arrived w/a group of Russian naval ships in Havana last week. None carry nukes but the'Kazan' can carry Russia's newest hypersonic missile – the long-range Zircon traveling @5x the speed of sound w/a max firing range of 1,000 km (620 mi.) The US replied sending it's nuclear-powered fast attack sub, the 'USS Helena.'
So I'm thinking since the US can't match Russia's hpersonics it tried to see the Kazan' and raise with 300K NATO troops on "ready" 🙂
Unless you're a member of the Russian admiralty or general staff, or are crew on that submarine, you have no idea whether it's carrying nukes or not.
"The Kremlin says" is exactly as reliable vis a vis facts as "the White House says" or "the Pentagon says."
"The Kremlin says" is exactly as reliable vis a vis facts as "the White House says" or "the Pentagon says."
I would venture you have no way of comparing the two as relates to reliability. I would assert that pronouncements made by Putin more closely represent reality than what emerges from any of Biden's orifices.
True I don't, I'm repeating what was "reported" in US media from Cuba. What I didn't 'repeat' were Putin's comments some time earlier in this conflict inferring with his unmatched hypersonics he doesn't need to use first-strike nukes regardless RF doc.
From my oberservations Ritter, McGoveren and Johnson are right, Putin doesn't bluff. However, GilbertDoctorow said last week Putin's come under pressure from the "chatting classes" for allowing the west to think he, Putin and Russia the country are "bluff." Maybe as a consequence Putin will change your opinion.
“Maybe as a consequence Putin will change your opinion.”
Which opinion of mine do you think he could or would change?
The part where you don’t take their word as a face value.
The Russian frigate also carries Zircons, 32 of them. Also Zircon range could be as high as 1,500km, according to Martyanov. Speed is also higher than Mach 5: Mach 9 (6,900 mph; 11,000 km/h; 3.1 km/s).
Martyanov covered the basics of the real meaning of this visit in this post:
Zircons Paying A Visit..

From that link:
"In related news, commemorating 80th Anniversary of the D-Day, Biden didn't even mention a key role Soviet Union and Red Army played making Allied landing possible."
I read the other day that France had originally invited Russia to send representatives but Biden threw a hissy fit and refused to show up if the French didn't rescind the invite.
Tks for the link, tho it reminded me why i forget to check Andrei's blog. My languages ended w/unix, Andrei's makes my eyes cross! But I get the Zircons aren’t there to stain the ITBs’ tidy whities, I'd figured the Kazan could mosey on up the Innercoastal. And I learned, or I think I did, that the 3M14s are the Kalibrs & were the Kazan carrying them it wouldn’t need the Innercoastal and then my eyes crossed 🙂 When it comes to Russian presents, I'm definitely rooting for the Houthies!
Good point, JS2024. Also, they say 550k, but which countries actually have people willing to go? Even the US I do not think could get many willing to serve in a war there. This conflict in Ukraine seems to be on verge of being as unpopular as Vietnam was, and more realizing of our mistakes, and the unnecessary deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan
Every military branch of the U.S. does not meet the recruiting numbers needed to replenish those who are or have left.
Colonial Outcasts/Greg Stoker ex-ranger and an AF combat controller buddy, missed the name – also ex, were talking blowback from Israel's hostage rescue/massacre expecting/speculating recruiting would be taking a further hit.
Do these countries think that Russia will not have an answer the country that is the first to attack Russian forces…..?????? Or do they think Russia will do nothing……?????? My opinion is that Russia will do something to any invading NATO forces crossing into Ukraine or perhaps the Capitol city of the state that is first to cross the frontier.
They meant to say they're expecting to defend an attack by 500,000 Russian soldiers… since NATO is a Defensive organization…!
The availability is meaningless without support.
How will these countries feed them in Ukraine much less support them in combat.
The Ukrainian logistical system is in chaos. Most of the trains are electric, and Russia has shown they can take the electrical grid down whenever they want. It's apparently taking weeks just to get artillery shells from the receiving depots in western Ukraine to the front, and troops are walking for days.
Hey Hey USA! How Many Kids Have You Killed Today!!!
Anyone up for WWIII?!
The NATO death cult is getting ready to drink their own Koolaid.
More like their own Urine
And body bags to match.
NATO: 500,000 Troops on High Readiness for War With Russia.
Officials say the alliance now has hundreds of thousands of soldiers ready to deploy to fight Russia within a month.
what are those half a million troops going to do, line themselves up on Russia's border?
"oh any minute now Russia is going to invade Europe! time to bust out half a million troops and send them to the front-lines that we have drawn!"
fuckin what.
right. and uncle sam will pay for the entire affair out of the goodness of his heart.
i wonder how many bullets does it take to properly arm a 500,000 man army.
… presumably they'd be rotated into the Ukraine to suplement and replace dead and wounded units, and stiffen the battle line where needed …??
The German defense minister recently said that after shipping almost all its ammo to Ukraine, the German army only had enough for two days of combat.
so NATO is planning to attack Russia, even though no NATO country has been attacked.
Hah! A load of PR BS. They have zero readiness. They could not put together that many troops in a month or six months. This is pure propaganda intended to scare the Russians and mollify the public. The Russians know exactly what NATO can put in the field and they are not impressed. It is only the ignorant public that won't understand that this is pure nonsense.
Hopefully Russia will answer any NATO aggression by nuking each and every NATO countries capital.
In the case of the US we can only hope that it's when the Presidiot is addressing a joint session of Congress.
I pray to the nonexistent gods every State of the Union for a meteor strike, but none have answered yet.
