The House on Wednesday passed a resolution that suggested the US would use force against Iran in the future in the name of preventing the country from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The resolution says a nuclear-armed Iran is “unacceptable” and declares that it’s the policy of the US to “use all means necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.”
A US intelligence report recently affirmed that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, but reality doesn’t stop Iran hawks in the US and Israel from constantly hyping up the threat of a non-existent Iranian nuclear weapons program. The same officials do not officially recognize that Israel possesses a nuclear arsenal.
The resolution passed in a vote of 354-53, with 50 Democrats and three Republicans voting against the measure. Explaining his opposition, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) because it seemed like a call for war.
“Yesterday Congress passed a resolution (354 to 53) that claims Iran possesses all it needs for a nuclear weapon,” Massie wrote on X. “The same resolution says the US should ‘use all means necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.’ Seems like a call for war on Iran. I voted No.”
The resolution pointed to Iran’s uranium enrichment at 60% and its stockpiles of enriched uranium as evidence it could make a bomb. But in order to make a nuclear weapon, uranium needs to be enriched at 90%, and there’s no sign Tehran is considering taking that step.
I think it behooves the US to enter into a productive discourse, with Iran and from there, present Iran with the opportunity to engage, conversationally, and make viable options, such as nuclear agreements, which would be binding and also contribute to further nonproliferation of additional weapons development programs.
The nuclear genie is out of the bottle and it cannot be put back in.
You mean like the JCPOA? What’s the point of even pretending that the US is even capable of “productive discourse”?
the irony of this seems to whoosh right over everybody’s head
Exactly what I was thinking. The JCPOA is and was exactly the “productive discourse” suggested, and in the end it was the USA who broke the deal – and in the process, ruining the domestic credibility of Persian moderates who’d pushed against the hardliners for the deal.
You have to remember that Joe did not give back Iran’s money, directly. He passed it off to Qatar, to be doled out (if, at all) to Iran in increments. Or not at all.
uncle sam had a deal with Iran re: nukes. Trump eliminated that deal, and then earlier this month he suggested that uncle sam should “make some sort of deal with Iran re: nukes”
you couldn’t make this sh*t up.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA! But of course.
In Iran a Fatwa is an order from Allah.
A fatwa isn’t an “order from Allah” anywhere. It is an opinion or ruling on Islamic law. In Iranian “Twelver” Shia specifically, a fatwa from a marja’ al-taqlid is considered binding (unlike Sunni fatwas), but the marja’ claims to speak for the hidden imam in interpreting the Quran, not to to be delivering a direct “order from Allah.” Muhammad was the last guy allowed to do that.
In Iran’s case, there was a fatwa to NOT manufacture a nuclear weapon.
the marja’ claims to speak for the hidden imam in interpreting the Quran, not to to be delivering a direct “order from Allah.” Muhammad was the last guy allowed to do that.
“oh hidden imam please instruct your self-appointed mouth-piece to tell us what to tell everybody else what to do!”
……. every Jewish, Christian & Muslim holy guy ever
If they’re serious about “all means necessary”, I’m all for it. And the first and most essential step must be to destroy Israel’s arsenal.
Do you not remember, or choose not to remember, that Iran has the goal of removing Israel and Jews from the face of the earth?
Israel by its racist criminality has repeatedly forfeited its right to exist as a state. No one is suggesting “removing” all the Jews, … a very large population of which live peacably is Iran.
“No one is suggesting ‘removing’ all the Jews”
“the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah’s promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said: ‘The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews.’ (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).” — Article 7, Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS)
Not Iran Hawks…. rather Iran Retards…!
Development of a nuclear weapon (like any other military system) requires testing.
..from armscontrol-
“Any state will be prevented from acquiring new-design, two-stage thermonuclear weapons in which it could have much confidence. Although a state might design and even build new weapons within its existing range of experience, it would not have full confidence in their performance or reliability.”
Yes, it does.
I would say that was true from 1940 to maybe 2010. But today’s computers and modeling technology have changed that. Of course full testing is the still the best. But I’m willing to bet Israel, for example, has complete confidence in their weapons working. Of course the quote is about two stage thermonuclear bombs, AKA hydrogen bombs.
The much simpler atomic bombs do not require testing.
I guess sanctions just don’t cut it anymore. Let’s send Biden over there, scare the crap out of them (that’s he’s actually the one in charge of the nuclear arsenal).
Its anti semtism to even doubt that Iran has ongoing
active nuclear bomb making program .
Netanhyu has been alerting US that Iran would have a nuke in 6 weeks .He has been quite confident repeating the timeframe from 1992.
When Israel has the Bomb, many of them. Supposedly, around 400. Or so said Mordecai Vannunu.
This is like fantasy football. Dream matchups are highly unlikely.
“The resolution says a nuclear-armed Iran is “unacceptable” and declares that it’s the policy of the US to “use all means necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.””
I don’t think the USA really fears a nuclear-armed Iran attacking anyone with nuclear weapons.
I think the USA fears a nuclear-armed Iran DEFENDING ITSELF with nuclear weapons. Against a US- or US-allied attack.
Wise words, good sir, wise words…
No more wounded warriors, like in Syria and Iraq, for Israel.
July 15, 2019: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “At the moment, the only army in the world to fight Iran – this is the Israeli army.”
Let “the Israeli army” do it!
