Niger’s military junta has ordered police to expel the French ambassador from the country and revoked his diplomatic immunity.
Ambassador Sylvain Itte was ordered to leave the country within 48 hours last Friday, but Paris ignored the deadline. The order for Itte to leave was made in response to his refusal to meet with the new post-coup government that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
Despite the junta’s new order for Itte to be expelled by the police, France is still refusing to comply. The French Foreign Ministry said Thursday that the ambassador will stay put and that the junta, led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, has no authority to make such an order.
According to Al Jazeera, a French military spokesman threatened military action if the situation became too tense. “The French military forces are ready to respond to any upturn in tension that could harm French diplomatic and military premises in Niger,” the spokesman said. “Measures have been take[n] to protect these premises.”
France has about 1,500 troops in the former French colony and has strongly backed threats from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intervene in Niger if Bazoum is not reinstated. French President Emanuel Macron said this week that Paris would support such military action, which could spark a major regional war.
Exploiters, Get Out! France is a colonialist without the name.
Imagine still trying to keep your colonial status over Niger after all this time.
Yeah because being decolonized worked so well for other places like hong kong right?
Sometimes when you remove the colonial parasite, the body tends to get weak and begins to fight the infection. It’s pretty standard.
Good! They are probably tired of the French taking all their stuff.
The French Foreign Ministry said Thursday that the ambassador will stay put
Seal the Embassy, he’ll stay put alright!
He’ll be like Julian Assange, trapped in the embassy for years to come.
France is sleep… It’s time to wake up…!
France does not get to say who the rightful government of Niger is … it is not their country. Pack up and leave, ye bastards, the free ride is over.
Just, on their way out, I hope they take our 1500 men with them.
We will have to leave, elegantly. Without France controlled government in Niger, no foreign troups are safe. If US government asks tge new government to guarantee out troups’ security — that is de facto recognition.
France has about 1,500 troops in (Niger)….
and they are literally threatening to throw their weight around.
wouldn’t that make them some kind of terrorists?
isn’t that was is happening with US troops stationed in Syria?
Like the yanks the French think they are still in the colonial era and refuse go when when told to , the French have killed untold numbers of Africans over the past 200 years time for them to GO no one wants them in their countries .
Pick him up, give him 15 minutes to pack his clothes, put him on a commercial airliner (coach; hopefully in a middle seat in the back surrounded by 4 screaming infants!), delay the plane on the tarmac for 3 hours before allowing it to take off, fly his frenchy ass back to france, and good riddance!! He’ll have been treated about as well as most american tourists in France are.
Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali just signed the mutual defense pact. Niger also made it clear that if anyone invades — France or France organized neigbori gvstates, Mali and Burkina Faso are authorized to come in.
It is clear that this anti-colonial mood is the cause of the coup in Gabon. Of those states, Mali is tge best prepared. Niger played it well. It irdered French troups and Ambassador out — but not American troups. Once French military and their enablers in Niger government are gone. America will linely pull out. American soldiers were once before ambushed with deadly cinsequences. US can stay only if French controlled government. Doubt USvwill risk them staying.
The real gorila in the center of attention is Nigeria. The nain source of oil, but also a disfunctionsl and corrupt system. The key is military, Time will tell.
