China sent a record number of warships around Taiwan in a single day last week, topping a previous high set when the Chinese military responded to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island in August 2022, The South China Morning Post reported.
The Taiwanese Defense Ministry said that it detected 16 Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) ships operating around Taiwan on Friday, although it’s not clear how close they came to the island. After Pelosi’s visit, the PLA sent 14 vessels around the island for drills that simulated a blockade.
In April, when Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with the current House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, China also conducted large-scale exercises around Taiwan and sent 12 PLA warships to the area.
Major Chinese military exercises around Taiwan are typically done in response to actions the US takes with respect to Taiwan, and Washington has continued to boost ties with Taipei despite Beijing’s position. It’s not clear if there was a single event that sparked the PLA’s decision to send 16 warships around the island.
Global Times, a Chinese state media outlet, mentioned that the PLA warship activity came as the House passed its version of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes provisions to boost military ties with Taiwan, and after NATO issued a communiqué at its summit in Vilnius that took aim at China. Taiwanese media said the record number of Chinese warships came after a few days of steady PLA activity around Taiwan.
Could the battle for computer chips and control of rare earth minerals start WW3.I think absolutely
At this point, it would be very weak and STUPID for China not to make it clear that they are ready for battle if pushed too far.
If all trade from China stops all at once, it will not be a good day for non-millionaire US citizens.
No more “made in china” worldly goodies could possibly awaken many woke from it’s stupor. That would be good.
Get our unemployed people working on full time, well paid jobs. End our dependence on semi disposable manufactured goods-make things to last.
Your idea is sound. Trump tried to start moving us in that direction in the last two years of his Presidency. He got the impede Chinese imports with tariffs part started, but US industries did not do the start creating factories part.
The US business supply chains will take at least 5 years to recreate. Profits for our businesses will drop due to your well paid labor force request. No one has even started talking about what business incentives will be needed to start making your plan a reality. Businesses will need both infrastructure improvements and start up money as well as ongoing incentives to make this happen.
Furthermore, the pollution that these businesses are causing in China will be brought here. Live with polluted air and water? Who is going to pay for pollution prevention and cleanup if we decide to reduce the amount of pollution?
I would love to see your plan come to fruition. We are far away from making it a reality.
It was US businesses that chose to produce disposable goods over durable goods. Durable goods fail to provide recurring income.
This is a separate issue. Getting businesses to produce durable goods will be a tough sell to the business community because it produces so much less profit for them.
They can fork us royally by mass dumping Treasury securities-but that would also cost them.It appears that China is doing the pushing-their rule over Hong Kong and Tibet has been brutal, and Taiwan can expect the same if conquered.
Or they could wait for Russia to economically weaken the Anglo-American empire before buying everything.
“detected” LOL
Obviously the solution is even more chip production in Taiwan not less (say the war mongers)
Ain’t de-industrialization great. The USA can’t produce enough shells or armaments now to supply its proxy Ukraine in a war the USA has wanted since 1945. Russia and the rest of the world wins. You lose. China is in no danger of being in a war with a rapidly declining has been.
These maneuvers are intended to desensitize and push the limits so one day they can make their big move.
