The House on Thursday night voted down an amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act that would have prohibited the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine.
The amendment was led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and failed in a vote of 147-276. The amendment received support from 98 Republicans and 49 Democrats.
The night before the vote, Republicans on the House Rules Committee voted down the original amendment relating to cluster bombs that would have banned the export of the controversial munition to all nations, not just Ukraine, which had bipartisan co-sponsors. The Republicans then added the narrowed-down Greene amendment, which was less likely to get Democratic support.
Narrowing the amendment to Ukraine made it more of a vote against military aid for Ukraine rather than a vote against cluster bombs, and there’s been virtually no dissent from Democrats on President Biden’s Ukraine policy.
Even if the amendment passed, it wouldn’t have blocked current shipments of cluster bombs as they have already started arriving in Ukraine, and the NDAA still has a long way to go before it becomes law. Both the House and the Senate need to pass their versions, and then the two chambers have to negotiate the finalized version.
The House also voted down amendments put forward by Greene and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to reduce funding for Ukraine. One amendment from Greene would have cut $300 million in military aid for Ukraine that’s packed into the $886 billion NDAA, but it failed in a vote of 89-341.
Gaetz put forward an amendment to cut off all military assistance for Ukraine. The measure failed in a vote of 70-358, with only Republicans voting in favor.
276 RetardiQAns and DemoRats are now complicit in potential death of children and civilians of Ukraine and Russia…!
Love the reference to “RetardiQans and DemoRats,” but don’t forget the Ukrainian soldiers. The Russians are likely to unleash all their cluster bombs on top of their heads and all at once. If you’re into that type of thing, get yourself some popcorn. …Sorry. I take it back. That was cheap to compare them to popcorn… No, I wouldn’t do that. I am… I am morally superior. I promise. (Sarcasm alert)
I have zero sympathy for the Nazis or their supporters in Ukraine, but Ukraine was basically caught in the middle between the U.S., which is fighting for global hegemony, and Russia, which is trying to defend itself from the U.S.
Yeah, those poor trapped Ukrainians.
https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-putin-protest-kharkiv/25424952.html
That’s not relevant to what I said. Ukrainians could be totally evil, and they could still be caught in the middle. I don’t excuse their tolerance of Nazis, but if it weren’t for the U.S. trying to take over the world, this war wouldn’t be happening.
You’re right that the war wouldn’t be happening if not for the US. But you can’t “catch” volunteers, and Ukrainians are, and have long been, desperately eager to fight Russians (refer to the videos and a world of other evidence). They may be stuck, but they aren’t caught.
The ‘exceptional nation’ again feels it doesn’t have to abide by international law. This war has revealed for all just how morally bankrupt the U.S. Gov’ment is.
They are actually WORSE than U give the GHOULS credit for. 🙁
Empires like the U.S. only abide by their own laws, and even then only when it suits them.
Brilliant. Put Greene’s name on anything and it won’t pass.
Probably so, as being that she is NOT part of the NeoCon Swamp.
She’s equally disgusting. Another antiwar type if it’s a democrat war.
I have to disagree. 🙂
Did you listen to her when the Chinese balloon was floating around the US? She’s just like Gaetz.
That is apples and coconuts my Brother! 🙂
Hardly. She’s NOT antiwar.
I’m willing to bet that if Trump were to get elected in 2024, the Republican opposition to any U.S. war would evaporate, with the exception of Rand Paul. This is a perfect example of illegitimate partisan politics.
If these supposedly anti-war Republicans prove me wrong, I’ll be happy to say loud and clear that, at least on this issue, they’re on the right side and the Democrats are on the wrong one. But neither of these scumbag parties is on the right side of anything important, and I can’t imagine this happening.
To be clear, I very much welcome any anti-war votes for any reason, and I’m glad that at least some Republicans have turned against the U.S. proxy war in Ukraine. But thinking that these people are actually against U.S. wars for empire is delusional.
Jeff, they are all DC Ghouls and POS’s, evil as F##! Of course we are all as guilty as we vote them back in, time after time. Express elevator to hell, Jeff. 🙁
Regardless, right or wrong, her name is all it takes.
We get it , it confirms their values, what a disgrace for a democratic nation.
Seems like a cluster f–k to me…
US/NATO is governed by war criminals, not a single congress member has enough character and integrity to risk political capital to do the what is right. Not one, we really are governed by killers, war criminals. A total disgrace of Democracy.
The Ukrainians were told they die for the right to become a NATO member, when all know including Stoltenberg it will never happen. They have no right to become a member in
a club where they are not wanted.
The Cato people said it, NATO should walk away and close the door behind it, Ukraine should not be admitted, it would not be cost-effective.(you tube July, 07)
Hundreds of thousands Ukrainian young men were killed for a lie and a country, nation annihilated.
The inmate killer- monsters are running the Asylum.
This time as ridiculous move as it was — exposed all those pious posers that wanted all cluster munitions ban. So, they would have actually voted for banning
ALL — but will not ban export of cluster bombs for Ukraine. Hmmm. It is because these bombs actually are already gone. We woukd have banned them, Scouts honor.
Aren’t all these clowns boring to tears! They “wanted” to “”stop” war in Yemen, for ver concerned. Now, most of them would dearly live to restart war in some shape or other, as Saudis no longer care what US Congress thinks. Between Iran and Gulf, problem of Yemen, North or South will be sorted.
What is nexr? Who will take a fake banner advocating end to Ukrainian aid?
The empty games for our amusement continue,
There is profit to be made and officials serve the donor class not the voters. They do as expected. Nothing but scumbags.
Yes, , nothing but scumbags. But what really irks is this periodic show of piousness — acting so selflessly and humane! I thought were were done with this crap once Yemen war got out of our control.
But no — here comes cluster bombs! What virtue signaling! They will ban ALL sales of such dreaded weapons aimed at civilians. How magnanimous!
Then comes crude and rude Ms Green to make it easier to be so munificent! Why not ban cluster bombs for Ukraine, let us start here! What! .Ban cluster bombs and deprive poor Ukraine. Never!
Let them stick to scumbaggery. So much easier to stomach.
There is money to be made, which explains it all. The high percentage of unexploded duds, little bomblets which will exploding years and decades after the war, killing civilians and mostly unexpecting children, is the big issue, and again they lie about it, of course only a small numbers will be duds, so they say.
MTG is FOS….!
Nothing but groveling pigs.
The UniParty runs the show by way of national security state direction.
Sleep well friends, we are protected tonight and each night from Putin and Slavic hordes marching across Europe with their eye eventually on the US of A.
If the Ukrainians can’t stop them we will fight them to the last Pole.We will never give in as long as we have weapons to sell.
Gotta kill as many kids as possible for Uncle Joe – especially if they’re ethnic Rooskie kids. Right Uncle Joe?
A disgrace and war crime. This is going to end extremely badly for the United States – it’s the worst decision they could have made at the worst time.
They will find a way to fall even deeper, they will open the door for nuclear weapons too. They are people without a conscience and stupid enough.
We have a bunch of psychopaths running the planet, the worst of whom are the leaders in the U.S. I think we’re in this situation, at least in the U.S. but probably also elsewhere, because the population is filled with unevolved fools who lust after money and material things. So the general population votes for leaders who they thing will get them money and material things, and we end up with these psychos in power.
As the late great George Carlin correctly pointed out, politicians don’t just magically appear from nowhere. If you have a country of bad people, you get bad politicians, simple as that.
And so many voters can’t understand how important a politicians character and integrity really is. We have bad and greedy people running for office because the salaries, benefits and future lobby positions and no work except campaigning is an easy way to get rich fast and very rich.
The idea of a politician with integrity is an oxymoron, with only rare exceptions that no longer exist in the U.S., at least at the federal level. Dennis Kucinich was the last one in Congress, and they made sure to get rid of him.
People are easily fooled by what politicians say instead of watching what they do. If you stick to watching what they do, you can clearly see whether they have any integrity.
The people in Congress who voted against this amendment should be removed from office and imprisoned. I’m not just saying that because I’m seething about this, but also because making, providing, or using this type of weapon is totally immoral, and should be a war crime even though it isn’t (neither the U.S., Russia, nor China have signed the treaty banning cluster bombs). While I’m not a big fan of prisons — I believe they shouldn’t even exist, though in this grossly overpopulated society it’s a lot more complicated than that — I’d happily make an exception for the war mongers and mass murderers.
Of course they have they all have shares in the MIC .
At least they all rely on campaign contributions from the MIC.
To show how undemocratic our electoral system is, there’s no way to vote against war or the military/intelligence/industrial complex. There might be some candidates who oppose those things, but the system is rigged to prevent them from having any reasonable chance of winning.
