Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said Monday that he will be the Republican co-sponsor of an amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that aims to block the provision of cluster bombs to Ukraine.
The amendment was introduced by Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) and is co-sponsored by Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA).
“I’m going to be the Republican co-sponsor of the Jacobs amendment before the House Rules Committee,” Gaetz said on his podcast.
The amendment reads: “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no military assistance shall be furnished for cluster munitions, no defense export license for cluster munitions may be issued, and no cluster munitions or cluster munitions technology shall be sold or transferred.”
Gaetz said that the NDAA will be voted on this week in the House. “We have an opportunity with bipartisanship to stand against the war-mongering Bidens,” he said.
Cluster bombs spread small submunitions over large areas, many of which do not explode on impact, making them a hazard for civilians who can come across them years or even decades later. Because of their indiscriminate nature, cluster munitions are banned by over 100 countries, including many of the US’s top NATO allies.
“Children will be left without limbs and without parents because of this decision by Joe Biden if we do not work together in a bipartisan fashion to stop it,” Gaetz said.
While there is an effort to block the shipment of cluster bombs to Ukraine, they could already be on the way. The Pentagon announced they were providing cluster munitions in the form of 155mm artillery rounds using the Presidential Drawdown Authority, which allows Biden to ship weapons to Ukraine directly from US stockpiles.
Biden has defended his decision to arm Ukraine with cluster munitions by saying both Ukraine and the US are running low on ammunition. Colin Kahl, undersecretary of defense for policy, said the US will arm Ukraine with “hundreds of thousands” of the munitions.
The shame — it’s just horrible. Gaetz, et al are doing the right thing — sadly the “claim” is that these cluster bombs will explode on impact something like 96% of the time. Which I have no reason to believe is true, but that will be the “reason” the US feels empowered morally to send these devices of deviltry to a land nearly 5000 miles away.
So Medvedev has threatened to strike nuclear power plants, and cluster munitions are what I’m supposed to concerned about?
“”Medvedev has threatened to strike nuclear power plants …””
really? here is what i found re that = Yahoo =
Quote from Medvedev: “If the attempt to attack the Smolensk NPP [in Desnogorsk, Russia] with NATO missiles is confirmed, we should consider the scenario of a simultaneous Russian strike on the Pivdennoukrainsk, Rivne and Khmelnytsky NPPs, as well as on nuclear facilities in Eastern Europe. There is no reason to hold back.”
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/medvedev-threatens-strike-three-ukrainian-170458071.html
right then. it seems that what Medvedev allegedly said was that Ukraine has allegedly tried to strike a Russian NPP and if that happens then Russia will strike Ukrainian NPPs.
——
be advised that next time you say something inflammatory, you should say it in its entirety.
Be advised that Medvedev has made numerous nuclear threats and this is just another variation of those.
If you don’t think this is a threat, then no threat coming from the Kremlin is a threat to you.
hey Julio check this out =
“doodle diddle daddle waddle diddle widdle fiddle faddle hoooo”
that is an electric guitar solo that i just composed in my head.
So is all of this theater?(as usual)
As soon as Gaetz became involved it became theater.
Let’s juxtapose cluster munitions with COVID “vaccines”. More in common than not. Depopulation is at the top of both agendae. The latter lead to many slow and often painful debilities and deaths. The former, as armaments, earn no rhetorical cover. They are instruments of absolute, unexceptionable cruelty. Depopulants, in both cases. Any questions?
I look at the two “dislikes” and wonder: where are their rebuttals? Most disappointing for the antiwar.com readership. No matter. I’ll be back.
“Depopulants, in both cases. Any questions?”
Sure. If the COVID “vaccines” are “depopulants,” why are there more people now than there were before the “vaccines?”
Your question/challenge is bereft of logic and based deficiently on correlation. Check all the salient facts and figure it out.
If he weren’t such a virulent Sinophobe, Gaetz might have the makings of a real statesman.
yeah, the sinophobia gives it away … he’s just another tool of the Complex, aimed at “official enemy no 2”.
I thought the superior ability to manufacture in the West would keep Ukraine supplied?
Now we hear they are out of shells so they are pulling these out of storage as a stop-gap until production can start….really soon.
Germany has already shared they can’t replace all those tanks that are currently being lost and now they are out of shells.
Western production prowness is not what some are claiming……lol.
Have they breached anything yet or are they still just getting all giddy about taking small barely defended hamlets in-between lines?
Running out of stuff prior to a breakthrough is not looking as a victory is coming soon.
Matt Gaetz want the US to hold onto those munitions, so they can be used against Mexico and China.
In response to Washington’s decision to supply the Ukrainian military with dangerous cluster munition, Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu recalled that Russian forces also have similar weapons and they will be forced to use them against the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Shoigu noted that similar Russian shells are more effective than those made by the US, but the Russian military refrained from using them because of the threat to civilians.
According to you, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were defeated last year. Why would Shoigu be “forced” to use them on a defeated force?
The Ukraine was defeated a year ago, it lead to the peace agreement that was signed by Ukraine. Moscow has made public the agreement. As per the agreement Russia withdrew its forces from Kiev.
Russia since then has been fighting a NATO proxy force, which Boris Johnson set up in his trip to Kiev, which rescinded the peace deal. Hence the change to a slow grinding war of attrition. And why Moscow has left over half a million reserves in place in case NATO does something stupid.
I estimate that the combined NATO forces have spent approx. US $1 trillion so far and approx. half a million casualties.
I get you have a different POV you believe the polar opposite. One of us is wrong, time will tell us who. But its looking more and more like a NATO strategic defeat.
In the board rooms of the manufacturers of death machines here in the U.S. of A., there are loud cheers. A few kids losing their hands an arms, perhaps dying? A cost of profits made. A farmer losing his leg to one in his field? Similar. DU? A mother giving birth to a child horribly deformed, or having a child die of cancer? Similar. Ah, the beautiful sound of American dollars flapping in the breeze…………………….
Ukraine doesn’t need cluster bomb neither does US. Blow all of them up.
Gaetz pretending to be antiwar again. At least democrat wars. Now let’s go kill us some “chinks”.
Biden is one sick unqualified man to be in the WH. Biden is a puppet with no functioning brain. Stop this insane war. Zelensky is another puppet, as is Biden, for the deep state. End this stupid war.
