The State Department on Thursday said reports of a potential agreement between the US and Iran related to Iran’s nuclear program are “not true.”
“With respect to Iran’s nuclear program, there is no deal. The reports that there is a deal or some agreement or some other description, however, you want to describe it, are not true,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
Miller’s comments come after multiple media outlets have reported that the US and Iran are close to a deal that would involve Iran pledging not to increase uranium enrichment in exchange for access to frozen Iranian funds. The two sides are also reportedly discussing a potential prisoner swap.
On Wednesday, The New York Times quoted an Iranian official who called the potential deal a “political ceasefire” to reduce soaring tensions between the two countries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Israel Knesset’s foreign affairs committee earlier this week that the US and Iran might reach a “mini agreement.”
Iran has confirmed it held indirect negotiations with the US in the Omani capital of Muscat in recent months. Oman’s foreign minister on Wednesday said that the two sides are close to finalizing an agreement on Americans who are held in Tehran and said there was a “seriousness” to also reach a deal on Iran’s civilian nuclear program.
Despite the deluge of reports and signs that the two sides are working out an agreement, the Biden administration continues to deny it, possibly due to pressure from Iran hawks in Congress.
Bibi (the Terrible) must be pissed.
If you want to see what chance in hell any deal ever gets honored by the US, just put the deal up for a vote in congress.
50 million US evangelicals, 80% of whom voted for Trump in 2020, have a collective hard-on for Armageddon and nothing short of WWIII will get them off.
And yet there was NO major wars when Trump was president. And now with the brain damaged zombie in D.C., we have war in Ukraine, and things getting ready to get fired up with China and in the Middle East. You don’t have to wait to see if the Trump supporters will get their wish of Armageddon in 24 as it looks as if the Great Grifter Biden will get us there long before that.
“And yet there was NO major wars when Trump was president.”
His escalation in Syria involved more artillery fire than in the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.
yes it did.
Let me state it this way, ‘there were no new major wars started under the Trump Administration’. The Middle East with Syria, Israel, Yemen, Iraq, Turkey have been at war or on the brink of war for years. Trump’s missle attack on Syria at the beginning of his term which in my opinion was just Trump trying to show to his critics that he wasn’t a ‘Putin Puppet’, and was a mistake. And to compare the escalation in Syria compared to the destruction and death in Iraq is simply wrong.
“to compare the escalation in Syria compared to the destruction and death in Iraq is simply wrong.”
The US forces fired more artillery rounds during Trump’s escalation in Syria than the US forces fired in the invasion, conquest, and occupation of Iraq. That’s just a simple fact. You don’t have to like the fact that it’s a fact. It’s a fact whether you like the fact that it’s a fact or not.
Trumped bombed Afghanistan more in 2018 than at any point of the war under Obama. He also lessened the rules of engagement there and everywhere else we were bombing or droning making it easier to kill. And his missile attacks in Syria were on him. He even had to be talked into giving Russia a heads up in one of them. Sy Hersh said he was out of his league and had to be talked down into doing something worse by the very warmongers he appointed. And he almost got one started with Iran and then took credit for stopping the very war he damned near statred.
One should note that Trump inherited Obama’s/Hillary’s war in Syria. He also ended it… more or less.
Less.
Much as I hated trump I feared that Hillary would more likely get us into war.
True any agreement would likely be executive branch only and wouldn’t bind the next president. So kinda worthless
It is an agreement not a Deal…!
Once again, tail wags dog. The parable of the frog and the scorpion comes to mind…
A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: “I am sorry, but I couldn’t resist the urge. It’s in my nature.” (Wikipedia)
A imperfect description about what is going on with US and Iran was given to the professional liar from State who uttered the immortal words “it’s not true” is all what is going on here.
Sure whatever he was asked about is not quite exactly what is going on, so sure, it’s not true and he isn’t quite lying, just perhaps “misleading” for the greater good if you want to call it that.
I really doubt the folks from Oman who are the go-betweens are telling us lies about their involvement like this State Department spokes-liar does as a daily task.

Just before Biden took office, the US briefly produced more oil than it consumed. That hadn’t, to the best of my knowledge, happened since the 1970s. Suddenly, oil produced in Muslim countries wasn’t nearly as important to us as it had been. Saudi Arabia and Iran soon decided that they weren’t enemies after all, and both realized that their best customers would be in Asia. I think that the US probably lost a lot of interest in Iran when we thought we were self sufficient again. I also think that China saw no value in continuing the policy of promoting friction between Saudi Arabia and Iran. If I’m right, these changes took the wind out of the sails to use the JCPOA as a stick to get what we really wanted.
That said, we still have to please Israel, and Israel is determined to be the ONLY nation in the region to wield nuclear weapons.
Low oil prices caused by US production would cause inflation to drop, consumers would have more discretionary income and the Middleeast’s “issues” would not matter to us all that much anymore.
But that would entail a direct opposite of the American left’s desires so we can’t do that.
If you try they’ll lock you up.
Don’t believe anything coming from Wash. anymore. The credibility gap gets wider every day as the whoppers continue. And, what’s behind all this? who’s the ‘Father of Lies’?
MSM, the Justice Department including the F.B.I and the rest of D.C. psychopaths have lost all credibility. One would have to be an Ivy League graduate to believe any of the B.S. they put out, and most probably don’t believe it but they know who is buttering their bread.
are you suggesting that the FBI and the DOJ under Trump, headed by Trump appointees, was getting their bread buttered by the Biden administration?
This is becoming a pattern. A mainstream media outlet (NYT, WSJ, WaPo) releases some bombshell “national security” article citing unnamed officials, usually of the “Russia and China bad” variety, and White House coming out to deny it. No redactions, corrections, or apologies are ever made.
Who are even supposed to believe anymore? These days antiwar.com seems a better news outlet than just about anywhere in the western media. Tucker Carlson (Don’t agree with him a lot, certainly agree with him on antiwar points) is relegated to Twitter now….
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Iran were to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Russia’s answer to NATO? If Russia can put tactical nukes in Belarus, the same could probably be done for any other member of the CSTO. That would end any discussion about whether Iran 𝑚𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 build its own nuclear weapons, and Israel would no longer be the only country in the region with a nuclear arsenal.
Just brainstorming.
I doubt that the Iranians would consent, at least openly, to a foreign power putting nukes there. The Supreme Leader has been pretty clear that nuclear arms are haram.
Also, Belarus is a Russian imperial satrapy and Iran is unlikely to become one even if it joins CSTO.
You’re probably right.
I have long suspected that US antipathy towards Iran is driven by two factors: 1. Israel’s determination to be the only nation in the region to have nukes, and 2. A continuing desire to control and profit from Iran’s oil.
The reason, in my opinion, that the CIA organized the overthrow of Mosaddegh in 1953 was that he supported nationalizing Iran’s oil.
What is the upside for Iran? If they had control of the nukes well I get it. Otherwise just becoming even more of a target doesn’t seem like a win.
The purpose of today’s sanctions is to prevent Iran from getting the bomb. If they actually had it, they might be treated more like India and Pakistan.

The machinations behind an imminent Iran ‘deal’
Alastair Crooke
“The second objective — again a Biden campaign imperative — is that no war in the region should break out in the run-up to the 2024 Election. The Team wants ‘industrial quiet’.”
What about escalation in Ukraine?
Escalation would be US troops involved, more shells or fewer shells but only Ukrainians dying is a detail. A win would be nice.
Probably an attempt to stop Iran from supplying Russia with weapons. Due to the Ukraine war fiasco the Russian and Iranian military industrial complexes are now joined at the hip.
