Mike Morrell, the former acting CIA director, revealed to the House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan, that he played a key role in rallying former intelligence officials to sign a letter which sought to discredit reporting on the Hunter Biden laptop scandal during the 2020 presidential campaign.
In a transcribed interview with Jordan’s team, Morell explained that his role in the suppression of the key story was done on behalf of the Joe Biden campaign and at the behest of now Secretary of State Antony Blinken who was then a senior campaign official.
According to the committee’s press release, "Morell testified that on or around October 17, 2020, Blinken… reached out to him to discuss the Hunter Biden laptop story. According to Morell, although [Blinken’s] outreach was couched as simply gathering Morell’s reaction to the Post story, it set in motion the events that led to the issuance of the public statement." The committee is now investigating Hunter Biden’s laptop as well as the Biden family’s international business dealings.
The story about Hunter Biden’s laptop was originally published in October 2020 by the New York Post. The laptop was abandoned at a Delaware computer repair shop in 2019, the Post published subpoenas which showed the FBI had seized the laptop. However, the shop’s owner had made a copy of the laptop’s hard drive and provided it to Donald Trump ally and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. In September 2020, the Post was tipped off about the laptop’s existence by Steve Bannon.
Twitter, Facebook, and other major platforms outright censored or took actions to suppress the reach of the story immediately. The letter organized by Morrell, which was signed by more than 50 former intelligence officials, seeking to discredit the report was published by Politico on October 19th, five days after the story was originally reported by the Post.
Echoing statements made by the Biden campaign, the letter claimed the Post’s reporting "has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation." It has since been confirmed by several media outlets that the laptop belonged to Hunter Biden and its contents are authentic. The House committee’s press release continues "Morell also explained that the Biden campaign helped to strategize about the public release of the statement. Morell further explained that one of his two goals in releasing the statement was to help then-Vice President Biden in the debate and to assist him in winning the election."
During the Barack Obama administration and in the wake of the 2014 US-backed coup in Kiev, then Vice President Biden’s son Hunter landed a highly lucrative job on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian natural gas company.
The laptop story revealed, among other things, that – in 2015 – Hunter Biden had introduced his father to a top executive at Burisma who had previously sought Hunter’s "influence" to help the company. Joe Biden has previously said he held up a major US loan to Kiev in order to pressure Ukrainian officials to fire a prosecutor who was at the time investigating Burisma’s corruption.
Morrell says he conducted "a little bit of [his] own research" before soliciting Marc Polymeropoulos, a retired CIA senior operations officer, for his aid in compiling the letter which was also signed by the likes of former CIA chiefs John Brennan and Leon Panetta.
Joe Biden exploited the letter during the October 22 presidential debate with Trump, accusing Moscow of targeting his son in an elaborate propaganda operation. For his part in the scheme to cover up the critical story – which may have mortally threatened Biden’s chances of winning the election – Morrell was thanked personally by Steve Ricchetti, the chair of the Biden campaign, in a phone call after the debate.
Morrell was reportedly being considered as a candidate to lead the CIA under the Biden administration, a position now held by William Burns, though he claims he was never formally in talks about taking the job.
On Thursday, Jordan, and Rep. Michael Turner, chair of the Select Committee on Intelligence, sent a letter to Blinken requesting his communications related to the current investigation, including with Morrell. The House committee’s press release concludes Morrell and his fellow former intelligence chiefs participated in a "concerted effort to minimize and suppress" vital information to protect the Joe Biden campaign. They argue that this deception prevented "American citizens from making a fully informed decision during the 2020 presidential election."
Morrell was the acting director of the CIA for two months during 2011, and again for four months between 2012-2013. He was a big booster of the Hillary Clinton campaign for president in 2016 and remains an avid defender of the post-9/11 torture regime. In 2016, on the Charlie Rose Show, he also publicly called for the US to support armed groups with directions to kill Russian and Iranian forces in Syria.
Morrell clarified that Tehran and Moscow should "pay a price" for supporting Damascus and that this should be done "covertly, so you don’t tell the world about it, you don’t stand up at the Pentagon and say ‘we did this.’ But you make sure they know it in Moscow and Tehran."

Apparently Trump whining about the “deep state” conspiracy actually created a conspiracy. Careful what you wish for.
The “deep state” is responsible for the “conservative” judges all over the place, and thanks to the work of Mitch McConnell. He seeded the lower courts (filibustered 78 of Obama’s nominees), contributed to the ascendance to SCOTUS Kavanaugh, Gorsuch and pretty Amy Coney Barrett. The “deep state” has pretty much won. And that includes the MIC. Everything else is a distraction, to keep our eyes off of the ball.
“Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive”….
Where are you Red? Are you still asleep? We need you here to dispel Antiwar.com conspiracies. They made a mess mentioning the CIA and FBI all over the place. (Sarcasm alert)
lol…..
“The laptop story revealed, among other things, that – in 2015 – Hunter Biden had introduced his father to a top executive at Burisma who had previously sought Hunter’s “influence” to help the company. Wow, if that is the hottest bit of scandal Mr. Freeman can find, then I would file the Hunter Biden laptop kerfuffle under ‘Bedtime Stories for Desperate Insomniacs’. If Hunter’s Burisma colleague asked him for a favor, is that surprising? And if Joe Biden leaned on a Ukrainian prosecutor to help Burisma avoid legal trouble, well that’s not what I’d call gallant behavior but it’s a pretty low mass on the scales of US interference in foreign affairs. Hardly a burning barn, or even a burning tractor.
The laptop story was an attempt by Republicans to tar Joe Biden with dirt from his son, who is no angel. It became public because a computer repairman violated the confidentiality of a customer’s hard drive (and that, to me, is the real scandal) and the GOP then picked out some naughty-sounding bits from Hunter’s email. But it was a dud, and the GOP’s candidate lost in a fair election.
I say to them, “Let it go. You can try again in 2024.”
Meanwhile, let’s focus on avoiding WW III.
.
How do you spell “smoking gun”. Way to go Jim Jordan, drain that swamp and lock em up . This could put the kybosh on the Neocon tribe. And doesn’t it blow your mind, 40M Ukrainians putting their lives in the hands of these botched abortions.
“For his part in the scheme to cover up the critical story – which may have mortally threatened Biden’s chances of winning the election”
“May have” being the operative words. I don’t think it would have made any difference. Would the revelation of Trump paying off the porn actress or the playboy model made any difference? We had the very two worst candidates we could possibly have (maybe trump vs Clinton) in our history, and I don’t think anything was going to change anyone’s mind. They were both disgusting and perceptions weren’t going to change.
With the letter, perceptions were cemented about Russia as our enemy and Trump as Putin’s agent. The damage from crushing the laptop story in that manner helped Biden in the elections and in his war with Russia. If it were the other way around (Republicans did this laptop operation to help Trump), this would have been Trump’s Watergate. But I’m no expert. (Sarcasm alert)
Seriously? Our perceptions of Russia were cemented long before the 2020 election. Do you actually think D’s would have voted for Trump or R’s for Biden under any circumstances? Especially given the fact that both of them have been in the limelight for over 40 years and we know exactly what kind of men they are. The fact that either of them were running for President kind of puts the kibosh on anyone voting because of something as insignificant as facts. This is about our electorate. In a normal world, hell yes it should matter but if it did, we wouldn’t have the Bidens or the Trumps in the first place.
“In a normal world, hell yes it should matter but if it did, we wouldn’t have the Bidens or the Trumps in the first place.” LOL. I don’t disagree. But it serves as a political “dog whistle.” See it here before they remove it: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dog_whistle_(politics)&oldid=1151048454
We, in America, were prepped about the Soviet Union with movies such as Red Dawn in the 80’s. It would not matter who it would be that could be accused of being a “red” lover.
People in American have the shortest lived memories. Propaganda is most effective if it is repeated snd repeated and the outrage response is pinged in the brain.
‘Red Dawn’ wasn’t Charlie Sheen in that movie?
LOL remember when Sylvester Stallone had to parachute into Afghanistan just to fight some soviet guys?
Hmmm, given the close calls in the Battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, etc. a 1% change would have made a big difference.
Great minds think alike. LOL. See below.
Do you think 1% of the evangelicals would have changed their support if they’d known Trump had paid off the porn actress and Playboy model? I don’t. That’s my point. Everyone knew they were both corrupt as could be and they still voted for them. I still have yet to meet anyone who voted for Biden for any other reason then who he was running against.
Evangelicals are quite two faced. Finding a triple adulterer OK is not OK .
Many Evangelicals overlooked Trump’s sleaze factor because they knew he would be giving them what they wanted on the centerpiece of their faith—eretz Israel.
I often wonder where we would be WITHOUT faith?… If we can “F” things up this badly with it, perhaps we’d be better off without it?
Faith in God is good. It’s faith in man’s erroneous ideas that is what causes troubles.
It’s good for the people that believe and don’t push what they believe on others. God is unknowable to me. If he made me in his supposed image, he left out some things. Namely, the intelligence to grasp eternity. I’ll die not knowing how I got here and I’m good with that. If there is a god and he/she expects blind faith, then I guess I’m out.
Faith is ‘blind’ belief without justification or reason. it is essentially inviting someone to deceive you. This has always appeared to me as a character flaw; not a virtue, but a willful and sloppy mistake and a shirking of judgement and the discernment required of an actual sapient being.
It’s not so much whether it would have changed anyone’s mind about who to vote for as whether to vote at all. That’s the essence of negative news: it doesn’t change the voting preference so much as it changes the voting participation rate.
Again, a miniscule 10,000 fewer people choosing to bother to cast for Biden in Georgia and it goes for Trump. Similar for a few other states and the election outcome is changed.
Well, we shall never know. Denizens of the Deep State and their collaborators in the MSM chose to not inform the people of the news and there you are. All very free and fair, of course.
Plus it was censored across social media.
I’m really only giving an opinion on the matter based on how I feel about Trump and Biden. Sometimes I can’t think outside of that. I’m still dumbfounded as to how 150 million people voted for men Walmart wouldn’t hire as greeters. So, in my mind there can’t possibly be anything that would have swayed the vote.
I hear ya … this is all late stage empire stuff … rediculous executives you wouldn’t hire to run a grocery store in charge of mega-nations. And it would have made zero difference if the other cretin had won in 2020 either. If he would resist pulling the triggers in Ukraine, they would have gotten rid of him.
My only consolation is that things are so much more obvious now than they were 20 years ago and these things can’t go on forever.
The question, then becomes… How does it end?……………………………………………………..
Thank you. I voted for neither.
It would have raised serious questions about the war in Ukraine and the intelligence (on Ukraine) secreted at the thinktank, where Blinken was also active.

Well, for starters, the shop’s owner committed a crime by making a copy of the laptop’s hard drive. For another, who “abandoned” the laptop? And another, how did he know who to provide the laptop to? The whole thing is really weird.
It’s likely and customary that he would have made a copy of the laptop’s hard drive before working on it. That he kept it could be deemed questionable ethically but a good number of us in the same situation would be tempted to since the FBI deemed it important enough to seize. For instance any journalist would certainly keep it, either under wraps for future use or outright write about it. In this case, the guy was a fan of Trump and passed it on there. I probably wouldn’t want this guy working on my laptop but seems mainly just to be bad luck for Biden is all.
This is such a Dick Cheney move. Step one: plant a story in the media using “expert” opinions. Step two: use your own planted story as confirmation of BS you are promoting*
*See NYT and weapons of mass destruction.
I remember that. I believe an article in the NYT.
Say what you will about Trump, but he exposed the man behind the curtain.
I agree. But I wish people would look at what he exposed himself to be. Or what he was all along. What I hate most about the perception of Trump is that there are people that think he’s more than just the better of two nasty evils
Trump was not a DC insider nor a true conservative. He certainly was not a man of class. He was loud, crude and made comments of the cuff. But he spoke the common tongue and highly entertaining.
This is what comes of not jailing Hillary. We had our chance, and we chose corruption at the highest levels.
Whadyu mean by “we”? I’m in favor or putting current and past POTUS on trial for crimes against humanity. Along with their supporting staff. Ditto for Congress too.
Keep in mind in the actual timeline the only thing changing here is that it became public of the laptop’s existence and contents. The FBI had it for months (10 months I believe but not sure) and it is inconceivable that Biden would not have been tipped off about it well before the NY Post uncovered the story. Regardless of whether he was or not, he and Blinken certainly knew it was Hunter’s laptop by then. I mean Hunter is the guy’s son. He’d be the first person to ask. Blinken by playing dumb to Morrell wondering if it could be Russian in nature is lying already.
Trump should find a Trump impersonator to be his VP.
Trump y Trump ’24!
LOL he could be in two places at the same time
