Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine was launched, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
The report, which cited people familiar with the matter, said Xi is also planning to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next week and will likely hold his talk with Zelensky following his trip to Russia.
The report indicates Xi is looking to mediate between the two sides and comes after Beijing released a 12-point peace plan for the conflict in Ukraine that focuses on calling for a pause in fighting and a resumption of peace talks.
Zelensky expressed openness to China’s proposal, but it was dismissed by President Biden and other US officials. Biden rejected altogether the idea of China mediating an end to the war that wouldn’t solely benefit Russia.
But China’s mediating credentials just got a major boost after Iran and Saudi Arabia announced they plan to normalize relations, an agreement that was brokered by China and came after days of negotiations in Beijing. Tehran and Riyadh are long-time regional rivals and haven’t had formal diplomatic relations since 2016.
Throughout the conflict in Ukraine, China has called for a ceasefire and negotiations. The US recently accused Beijing of considering arming Russia but provided no evidence for the claim. There’s no sign that China has decided to take such a step, as Chinese officials have warned sending arms to be used in the war would only prolong the fighting.
Good for China. Everyone needs to keep their sh-t wired tight and keep their heads level. We don’t need a larger confrontation.
The first and last points are ones that Putin will not agree to thus a non starter.
The 12 points are:
1. Respecting the sovereignty of all countries
2. Abandoning the Cold War mentality
3. Ceasing hostilities
4. Resuming peace talks
5. Resolving the humanitarian crisis
6. Protecting civilians and prisoners of war (POWs)
7. Keeping nuclear power plants safe
8. Reducing strategic risks
9. Facilitating grain exports
10. Stopping unilateral sanctions
11. Keeping industrial and supply chains stable
12. Promoting post-conflict reconstruction
You only ever repeat American propaganda, so forgive me if I discount your expertise on Putin and his likely responses to more sincere attempts at statesmanship.
Yes, only American propaganda because I absolutely don’t follow the BS coming from the Kremlin.
For example, here’s this bit of US propaganda:
Quote from Peskov: “There are no reasons for the situation in Ukraine to obtain a peaceful course at the moment. Achieving our goals continues to be our absolute priority, and will always remain such. This is currently only possible through military means.”
https://us.yahoo.com/news/kremlin-claims-no-conditions-peace-103246444.html
Now go ahead and spin this, Putin expert.
So you come here, a refuge from propaganda on both sides, to spread yours around. Maybe read some of the articles here?
I’ve been visiting this website since 2001 so take your BS lecture elsewhere.
Don, Putin was the one who wanted negotiations DECEMBER 2021, and again APRIL 2022. Get it??
Putin was right to want negotiations. But he was stupid, crazy and cruel to start a war that killed tens of thousands of people, destroyed a country, and made things much worse for everyone, including the Russian people.
You’re right. Russia would have been much better off with NATO missiles on the eastern border of Ukraine.
Thats true. Russia traded the threat of war on its Southern border for a forever war on its Southern border. How many thousands of troops has Russia lost? How many troops has NATO lost. Putin traded a security threat for a security catastrophe.
As did Biden.
You mean I will take have your country kind of negotiations?
You are ridiculous.
Let’s give China a chance. The Chinese are good at finding common ground and win-win outcomes. I can’t think of anyone better to lead a successful mediation. At the end of the day, Ukrainians and Russians will have to be neighbors. So eventually they have to stop killing each other. An end to the war that respect’s Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and gives Russia and Ukraine real security guarantees is in everyone’s interest except for US/NATO.
I agree however, I’m not convinced Putin will negotiate any occupied land but I Hope you are right about China.
The Paris peace talks took 5 years to end the Vietnam war and the Aghan war negotiations also took several years. This could be the beginning of a process which could lead to de-escalation and maybe eventually to peace. China is the only country that can talk Putin into making concessions. The question is how the Chinese leadership will balance loyalty to an important ally against China’s historic commitment to peace, self determination and territorial integrity.
Xi knows peace is good for business, war is not.
“China is the only country that can talk Putin into making concessions.”
Your lack of bias is charming.
If there is going to be peace, both sides will have to make concessions. The definition of a successful mediation is reaching an agreement that both sides are unhappy with.
Nope. That’s an American definition.
Win-win for whom?
There is no win here for the US or NATO.
Ukraine might survive in some form, if that is a win.
The war is lost, and even yesterday’s WaPo started to notice on its front page.
This is great news!
China is Russia’s ally, but China’s foreign policy is based of respecting national sovereignty and self determination. China is the ideal country to mediate this conflict. A successful resolution of the conflict would be good for the world.
Alll attempts at moving to peace should be encouraged and supported. The USUK warmongering here is incredibly destructive and shameful.
The problem is that even if Zel wanted to make a change, there are probably people installed around him to conduct a “removal” operation a la president Diem.
Zelensky expressed openness to China’s proposal, but it was dismissed by President Biden and other US officials.
“we still have some bullets and bombs to sell you”
….. uncle sam
“Blackrock and the IMF will be there to r*pe you of your resources”.
Actually, they don’t. Shelf is bare.
Chinese can only think of peace, while Biden, Blinken and Austin want only war and division.
War is final diversion to keep people from worrying about plastic molecules mixed in with their protein molecules, fire retardant in the water and Bayer Roundup in the food. If people start worrying about reality they will bring up the touchy subject of global climate collapse. Who knows what people will come up with if they start thinking for themselves? Maybe that the US Pentagon is an occupying force and we need a new form of real democracy.
Careful. China has been quite willing to use war, and often used it better than did the US. See the India border fighting, the Soviet border fighting, and the Vietnam border fighting.
F*CK BIDEN! Do it, China! Listen Zelenski! Listen Putin! My G-d in Heaven this proxy war by us needs to be unplugged.Ukraine’s fortunes lie with the East. Peace with Russia is the way. Stay the h*ll away from Blackrock and all of the other predators.
Ukraine could have found a safe place in the middle, to play off both sides. Austria did. Others did. It was Ukraine’s best play.
How much of that is still possible? Hard to say.
Putin would be a fool to agree to anything the US is likely to offer, essentially a long proxy insurgency war and most of Ukraine in NATO exactly as he feared.
But how much of a middle remains possible after all this was done to poison the well?
Good for China, bad for us. As bought out corrupt Biden allows China to take the mantle from the US as world leader in diplomacy as we start endless war after endless war that the US Citizens didn’t ask for andthey skim from the endless billions and trillions of wasted dollars that went into them. Vote this corrupt POS out along with his inbred nitwit son.
So who you gonna replace the current prez with? We await the imagination of Hollywood’s CIA/Pentagon script writers.
I suggest Oprah,Matt Damon or Bernie Sanders or Chris Hedges,He would be shot on the first day.
I still want Bruce Springsteen 😐
It really depends on whom the Fascist Republicans run.
Against the Fascist Democrats. This is a bipartisan war state.
Well, you make the valid point that we have to chose between two bought out options working for elite interests and not mine. F them. I’ll vote for a Jill Stein again.
It’s a real shame that we’re the dirt bags in this entire clusterf*ck.
But we are. And no amount of manure Biden and his gang can spread will alter the fact or our complicity and shame as a people.
I am getting really tired of being the dirt bags. This has gone on since Vietnam.
I don’t think it will happen, but wouldn’t be a marvel if China managed to broker a peace deal to end the Ukraine War?
Our highly paid analysts at these MIC agencies have long said that Saudi-Iran peace is impossible, but here we are staring at a peace deal. So let’s see what happens!
Wow! Checkmate. There’s panic in Neoconia. … still, desperate people…, you know. We cant rest till Nuland and all the WestExec Group are perp-walked out of HQ in cuffs.
Dismiss all you want… It will happen…!
The deal between Iran and Saudis did not come over night. It was preceeded by Russia and China striking 20 and 25 yearvdeals withbIran respectively. Precedded by Saudis applying for and being accepted into SCO.
where Iran is a top tier member. Russia and Iran have a long military relationship. It was Tzarist Russia that was invited to organize Iranian military forces, and both countries until today have very compatible organizations. Russia build Iran’s nuclear electric power plant. Both China and Russia have much to offer, giving zero incentives to Iran to accept onerous US terms.
And they have a lots to offer to Saudi Arabia. And to Ukraine, of course. I have hard time imagining that the emboldened Nazi structures in Kiev would want Chinese mediation as their existence is tied to the West. Zelenski cannot do anything on his own.
I can just imagine what future Russia and China can offer to Ukraine. Ecinomic development, trade, connectivity to the entire Asia and Middle East. West has nothing to offer. It is nice to visit Paris and pay a lot for the privilege — but no economic benefits. With inflation in energy running over 100% in UK, West has itsvhands full with own problems,
The US won’t talk, and Zelinsky has no power to talk. The US pretends it is in his power, as the US excuse to refuse all talks.
So what is China doing? They clearly know all this.
They are setting up something else, something to follow the US refusal to talk. What would that be? We must imagine that as creatively as no doubt Xi has done.
His strings must get cut first if he wants to negotiate.
Not sure what’s China’s angle for this dangle.
