China’s representative to the UN on Thursday said that sending weapons to be used in the Ukraine war will not bring peace as the US is claiming Beijing is considering providing Moscow with military aid for the conflict.
“One year into the Ukraine crisis, brutal facts have offered ample proof that sending weapons will not bring peace, adding fuel to the fire will only exacerbate tensions, and prolonging and expanding the conflict will only make ordinary people pay an even heftier price,” China’s UN Deputy Ambassador Dai Bing told the UN General Assembly.
Dai stressed that China’s position is that the warring sides should begin peace talks as soon as possible. “We reiterate our appeal that diplomacy and negotiation cannot be abandoned, and efforts towards ceasefire and talks must go on,” he said.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has claimed that the US has information that China is “considering” arming Russia, but Beijing has denied the accusation. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the US was considering releasing intelligence that shows Beijing is weighing whether to supply Russia with weapons, but it’s not clear what information the US actually has.
In the early days of the war, US officials claimed Russia asked China for military assistance. But it was later revealed by a report from NBC News that the US didn’t have “hard evidence” to back up the claim.
China and Russia have drawn closer together since Russia invaded Ukraine one year ago as they face similar pressure from the West, but there’s still no sign that Beijing has decided to send weapons. Chinese officials maintain it’s their policy not to arm either side.
This is what I call a “duh” moment.
We actually need China to lecture some common sense into us. Everyone talks about peace but then turns around and votes for sending over more weapons.
Haven’t you heard? War is peace. The fund the EU set up for arming Ukraine is called the peace fund or something like that. CNN has somehow gotten more crystal clear than ever, the west never did anything wrong or aggressive including the escalating arms. Officials assure us that Russia has already lost, and CNN opines that the challenge is to convince Putin of that, even while it’s obvious to everyone including our best liars that Russia is winning.
The lectures have begun:

Nope weapons into a war zone only bring peace if one side quits in the meantime they bring more war. It is Chinas perfect right to pick a side and sell weapons.
Correct.
You’re certainly right about that; and Blinken’s accusatory tone rings stunningly absurd, … but, in any case, what’s the point of mooting peace talks when it’s clear (to everyone except China, I guess) this can only end when the proxy is completely routed??
China to Bleeden and Bliken: An adult attempting to talk sense to petulant children.
How misogynist of you! You left out “f*ck the EU” Nuland.
I’m glad that China is the world’s new superpower. (Sorry, ByeDone, China’s Numero Uno, thanks to their propensity to invest in their citizenry rather than endless war.) The government appears to actually be run by sane people, unlike the United Snakes, which is chomping at the bit for war with China.
Our neighbor, a GM engineer, was sent to China to work for several years. His wife taught English while they were there. When they returned home, they missed it so much that he requested to be sent back for several more years.
Additionally, I greatly fear that all the anti-China rhetoric being spewed by the MSM will not end well here at home. Our two major universities here— Michigan State and the University of Michigan, both have high enrollments of students from China, and I fear for their safety.
The Chinese diplomatic intervention may be an ice-breaker. Zelenskyy asked for a one on one meeting with Xi to discuss China’s ceasefire proposal.

Zelenskyy’s desire to meet with Xi puts him in contradiction to Biden and Stolenberg who have both condemned China’s proposal. While China is close to Russia, support for national sovereignty has been a cornerstone of China’s foreign policy. China is the ideal country to broker of a peace agreement that will respect Ukraine’s independence, get the Russians to withdraw while providing long term guarantees for the legitimate security interests of Russia and Ukraine. I am hoping that Turkey and possibly the African Union and India can get involved in brokering a realistic peace and leave the US/NATO out in the cold. .
One of China’s responses to the charge that it might contemplate providing lethal weapons to Ukraine was to sanction Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. These companies have been fined an amount that is twice what they earned in arms sales to Taiwan. The fine could be as high as $14.4 billion.
