Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview published Wednesday that Poland is open to hosting US nuclear weapons and has approached Washington about the idea.
Currently, NATO members Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey host US nuclear weapons under NATO’s nuclear sharing program. The US and NATO have previously said that they wouldn’t place nuclear weapons in countries that joined the alliance after the Cold War, but Duda said discussions on the issue are happening.
“There is always a potential opportunity to participate in the nuclear sharing program,” Duda told the newspaper Gazeta Polska. “We have spoken with American leaders about whether the United States is considering such a possibility. The issue is open.”
The provocative statements from Duda come amid soaring tensions between the US and Russia that largely stem from NATO expansion east of Germany since the end of the Cold War and the alliance’s promise to eventually absorb Ukraine.
The US recently announced it was building a permanent military base in Poland, breaking from an agreement with Russia known as the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act. Under the act, the US and NATO agreed not to establish permanent bases east of Germany.
The US argues that the base in Poland doesn’t violate the act because troops will be deployed to the facility on a rotational basis, but it’s unlikely Moscow will see it that way.
Great. Nukes in Poland. Gotta love that.
More like President DoDo. And you know what happened to that bird.
Did it get eaten?
Ran over by accident by a customer at Outback Steakhouse.
The US and NATO have said does not mean much.
Placing nuclear weapons in Poland would make nice targets for Russian nuclear weapons too. The Poles must really like the idea. But hate is really powerful and they do hate Russia.
Agreed. “Resentment is like swallowing poison and expecting the other person to die.” Poland’s hate to Russia is so intense that it wants to make sure Poland is the first to be wiped out in a nuclear war. Although, I’m not sure if they’re going to win first place from the UK. It’s a close call but since I’m antiwar altogether, I’m not cheering for one of them over the other. But they don’t have to worry too much, they’re probably programmed to get nuked together by the dead hand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand
Great, Nukes in Kaliningrad get reciprocity.
What does all of this remind me of?…. Ah: Lie, deny, then alibi!
Understandably Poland is now terrified of a new partition, considering the recent Tweet of its ex-foreign minister. Is history repeating itself?
Just my view, but the one of the most likely causes of the next war involving nukes will be Poland, a nation bent on revenge against the non-existent Soviet Union.
And given the current administration, I would only be mildly surprised if president Blinken took the Polish up on it, given his demonstrated lust for global chaos.
The closer we put our nukes to Russia, the less time the Russians have to react if they have reason to believe that the United States has launched an attack.
There have been several false alarms involving nuclear weapons in the past, and there’s every reason to believe there will be false alarms in the future.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_close_calls
If our missiles are in Poland, the next time there’s a false alarm, the Russians would only have a few minutes to decide whether or not to launch a retaliatory strike.
By reducing the time that the Russians have to ascertain whether an attack has actually been launched, we’re only making it more likely that the button gets pushed accidentally, and if the button gets pushed that’s the end of human life on earth as we know it.
Nobody really in this world takes US words seriously. Promisses, agrerments, treaties, Inly ourpose — get something from opponent today. trash it when ibligations must be fullfilled tommorow.
Poland, a big hero of Ukraine’. Why has it sccepted an exemption, and is getting cheap Russian gas via pipeline? EU was supposed to exempt only lanlocmrd countries —Chechia, Slovakia snd Hungary. But behold Poland and Bulgaria are added, Why? Becsuse population is rebelling. Poland lives West only when it brings goodies. Bulgsria is ready to explode and West is trying to replacce current lresident Dummy1 with another Dummy2. But give them oil until the election and masses will go back to watching soaps.
Wonder how many millions in bribes (our money) Wash. gave Poland’s politicians to host nuclear weapons? This is about as malicious as a joke can get. Obviously, like the other countries involved in this ongoing blood bath, those who are in power in Poland don’t care about the people they are supposed to serve.
The dangerous bit is BEFORE the nukes become operational. If the Russians see construction, then a delivery, might be time to hit the nukes with conventional ordinance. Waaaay better silence B4 operationally. Too much posturing, too little deterrence. Anyone with a brain can see the dangerousness of such talk!!!!!
The primary point of the Ukraine war is for Russia to place strategic weapons in western Ukraine opposite the Aegis Ashore installations in Poland and Romania, to reassert MAD by placing Europe in the same 5-10-minute attack window as those installations place Russia.
If Poland tries to get nukes, this will merely guarantee that the above will be implemented. Belarus is already going to host Russian nukes, it’s inevitable that Ukraine will, too. It won’t matter if the US builds a permanent base in Poland, because Russia will build one – or more – in western Ukraine. And how the western Ukrainians feel about that is not going to matter. This is an existential issue of Russian security.
Then so might Cuba and Venezuela and Nicaragua.
What we do to them, we must expect they will do to us.
When the US was installing antiballistic missile systems there, it declared there would never be offensive nuclear weapons put there, only defensive missiles.
So much for those promises.
I thought that too. But Ray McGovern, the retired CIA official who co-founded (VIPS)Veteran Intelligence Professional for Sanity) said on a video post a couple of weeks ago that these missiles were only defensive was a ruse. He said to turn them from “defensive” to “offensive” missiles all that was needed was to replace a “defensive” CD with an “offensive” one by a computer programmer and reboot the software.
I’m pretty sure Moscow is 100% on board with this plan. Totally committed to US nukes being that much closer to their border. Of course, this is a great plan and they’d be silly to disagree with it. I’m pretty the Polish people are all for it as well, since they would be the latest guaranteed Ground Zero when the balloon goes up.
That is an awful idea.
