Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said Wednesday that the “numbers” favor Russia in Ukraine as Russian forces continue to make slow but steady gains against Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donbas region.
“I would say the numbers clearly favor the Russians, in terms of artillery,” Milley said at a joint press conference with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. “In terms of artillery, they do outnumber, they out-gun and out-range.”
Ukrainian officials have admitted in recent weeks that they are out-gunned in the east as they are pleading with the West to send more heavy weapons. The US pledged a new $1 billion aid package for Ukraine on Wednesday, but there is the matter of the time it will take to get more arms to the battlefield as Ukrainian forces still need to be trained.
Western arms shipments to Ukrainian forces fighting in the east could also be disrupted by Russian missiles. Russia said Wednesday that it hit a warehouse in Ukraine’s western Lviv region storing ammunition for arms provided by NATO, including munitions for M777 Howitzers.
Despite Ukraine’s setbacks, the US appears ready to support the war for the long term, and Ukrainian leaders still insist that their goal is to drive Russia out of all the territory it has captured. Earlier in the war, Milley said he expected a “protracted conflict” that will be measured in years.
“Numbers clearly favor the Russians.” No sh!t, Sherlock. You noticed.
🤠
The “hip-hip-hurray is apparently over. Now we are going to wage real war against the Russians.
Why on Earth is Antiwar.com paying the least bit of attention to what this
über-mediocre clown-in-uniform opines?
Who should they be paying attention to if not him? He’s the f*cking joint chiefs of staff. And unfortunately, in our world, those are the idiots that are listened to and have great influence.
Believe it or not, I knew the answer to my rhetorical question before I posted it. Thanks anyway for your response, Captain Obvious.
Bullshit.
What America now needs, more than any thing else is a defeat. To redeem itself from the evil that America has become. It is a nation in turmoil. Civil unrest, widening income gap financial collapse. . Every other day gun violence.Spiritually and morally deprived.Above all the country is taken over by Zionist fifth columnists and Americans have no say in their own affairs. Their freedom surrendered to this cabal.Scenario is of a nation visibly disintegrating
Hopefully defeat is coming and let America return to its roots as the the founding fathers intended it to be
Yes the American idiots will commit economic suicide bleeding and weakening America in a vain attempt to protect Joe Biden’s criminal buddies in Ukraine.
Thank god Joe Biden’s other criminal son Beau had the grace to die so his crimes could be hidden.
Even in Czarist times the Russian artillery was excellent but there were also typical Russian problems. When Krupp, around 1890, demonstrated his superior new breach-loader cannon to the Russians they admitted that this was by far the most superior cannon ever made. The Czar did not buy because he was told by his generals that it would take at least one year to produce even a new manual for the gunners. And then one more year to train them. By then Krupp would already sell an even better cannon.
The real cannon which Krupp gave the Czar is still in the Peter and Paul fortress!
Duh. LOTS of “numbers” favor Russia, including 1) number of miles between the Polish border and the Donbas front, 2) number of rail bridges still open to military traffic over the Dnieper, 3) % of equipment and ammunition crossing the Polish border that actually arrives at the fighting front.
There is ZERO chance that “more western arms” will arrive in time to “save” Sevierodonetsk; this will result in another mass surrender of some 3000 Ukrainian soldiers currently surrounded in the city.
And then what? The west will continue its buildup of weapons and equipment to Ukraine; but time doesn’t stand still on the Russian side; they will continue to destroy bridges and transportation infrastructure between their occupied territory and the Polish border, while further consolidating their hold on Donbas, Kherson, and Zaporizhie, strengthening their defenses, and moving their logistics and air support into the occupied territories.
If the west thinks the relatively small scale fighting to date is “like Verdun” (what an asinine comparison) the new round of fighting being supported by Biden, where an untrained army of 1 million Ukrainian conscripts is thrown against the prepared defenses, massed artillery and superior airpower of the Russian army will be beyond their ability to comprehend. And THAT slaughter will be largely on Biden’s head.
‘Numbers Clearly Favor the Russians’ in Ukraine
except for the number of bioweapon labs there, which has clearly been favoring uncle sam
No matter what the outcome of the next election, there will be no change. Both parties are essentially war mongers and benefit from all the MIC lobby money.
The US continues to be delusional and liars. Milley should know full well that there is zero chance that this war will last much more than a few months before the Ukrainian army has totally collapsed – by end of year at the absolute latest. If Russia decides this is too slow, they can easily bring in another couple hundred thousand troops, another thousand tanks, another 1,000 artillery and more aircraft and finish it sooner. Obviously at this point Russia is quite comfortable with the pace and the time frame. Reports say they can continue firing 70,000 artillery shells a day for a year.
I’m not so sure about that. While there is little doubt that Russia can control the Donbas, it will become progressively more difficult to gain territory between the Donbass and the Dnipro River, and crossing that river could be nearly impossible.
Ironically, the US recession could be very hard on Russia… because it could cause the global price of oil to drop. I think Russia realizes this. The price of oil could determine where the new borders are drawn, and could put pressure on Russia to move much more quickly than they would like.
Russia will have no problems going anywhere it wants once the Donbass reduction is done. Aside from Kiev fortifications, the rest of Ukraine has not been prepared for a full-on Russian advance and they don’t have the troops remaining capable of resisting. I saw an interview with a Ukrainian soldier who said basically all the Ukrainian contract troops are dead – all they have left is territorial and reserves. Ukraine has lost at least 100,000 troops, so he might be right. Ukraine loses 20-30,000 a month and have since the beginning.
As for oil price, Russia’s budget is for $40/barrel – anything above that is gravy. I don’t see oil dropping that low any time soon.
It’s the territorial soldiers who will be on the west side of the Dnipro river. AFU supply lines will be much shorter than they are now. Russian supply lines will be much longer than they are now. Rivers are formidable barriers.
Profit per barrel is not the problem. Revenue is the problem. Sanctions have failed because as qty sold goes down, price per barrel goes up. So total revenue stays the same. But if we see another global recession, both qty and price will go down. That would cause total revenue to fall. (Of course, the US economy would also be compromised for this to happen.)
The Russians are taking in at least $700 million dollars per day. If they take that in for ten days, that ten percent of their total annual military budget. They are in no danger of running out of money. The Russian economy right now is booming. Inflation is down, interest rates are being cut. You need to start following Alexander Mercouris Youtube channel who will explain to you the real economic situation.
As for any possibility that Russia is going to have any sort of problem with Ukraine territorial troops, you are delusional. It doesn’t matter how long the Russian supply lines are as long as they control the territory through which it passes. You have zero military comprehension of the balance of power. Don’t waste my time.
You know, even after Russia wins the war, our government will probably recognize some nonsense Donbas and Crimea “government in exile”
rather than face the facts on the ground.

The war in Ukraine will be decided by infantry like any war that has gone before lethal weapons can only get you so far ask the US Marines who fought the Pacific War with Japan , from the get go the USAF bombed every Island until not a tree stood yet when the Marines stormed the Island the Japanese infantry where waiting dug in to the hills / mountains like ticks on a Coon Hound , the Marines won the day but it cost them dearly in lost lives and countless wounded .
Russia deployed some 3000 howitzers into Ukraine but the interesting fact is they still have 17,000 in reserve.
As always the key factor with artillery is availability of ammunition.
