In an interview on Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said some NATO member states want the war in Ukraine to last longer as a way to hurt Russia.
“There are countries within NATO who want the war to continue,” Cavusoglu told CNN Turk. “They want Russia to become weaker.”
According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, Cavusoglu did not think the war would last long after Russia and Ukraine held peace talks in Istanbul last month. But following a NATO foreign ministers meeting, he was given the impression that some alliance members don’t want the war to end.
Since Russia invaded on February 24, the US and many of its NATO allies have abandoned diplomacy with Russia. Instead of seeking a diplomatic solution, the Western powers are pouring weapons into Ukraine and waging an economic sanctions campaign against Russia.
The view among some NATO members on the war was summarized by a recent report from The Washington Post. The report said: “For some in NATO, it’s better for the Ukrainians to keep fighting, and dying, than to achieve a peace that comes too early or at too high a cost to Kyiv and the rest of Europe.”
The blatant cruelty and cowardly self-interest of those wanting to prolong Ukraine war. Just watch Germany’s Generation War mini-series for view of what probably looks like on the ground now in Ukraine.
Probably true, lots of Eastern Europe owes Russia a favor. The length of this war is entirely in Russian hands, they leave tomorrow, it ends tomorrow. Stick around for longer, it lasts longer.
Or it’s entirely in Ukraine’s hands, they surrender now and commit to only nonviolent resistance, it ends tomorrow.
Where do you live? I need a house. I can come over and beat you and your family until you surrender then I move in.
Like in Baghdad?
Go to Israel. They made their country that way, and it is still happening all over the West Bank.
Pacifism can be an ideology or just a more effective strategy to get what you want. You’d find out the hard way which I follow.
Well except for the kill lists. There are piles of dead civilians shot in the back of the head in the formerly Russian held territories. How does that get explained? Hit by artillery is one thing could be an accident. Shot in the back of the head with your hands tied behind your back seems more intentional.
Not a fan of Russia; but I would be very cautious about assigning guilt for war crimes at this point; the stalwarts of the Ukrainian government have long been an odious assortment of neo-Nazi groups, who committed more than their share of war crimes during the Maidan coup, and in 8 years of fighting in the Donbass; one very un-reported fact is the “disappearances” (read, likely assassinations of) Ukrainian mayors who were leaning towards surrendering to the Russians, and the Government’s arrest of anyone they feel is un-warlike enough. David Stockman produced some well researched articles showing just how divided east and west Ukraine are, in terms of ethnicity and sentiment. And, those groups have had 8 years of pretty intense civil war (14,000 dead) to build up grievances; there’s definitely going to be a lot of killing, for which the invasion is a catalyst, but not the root cause.
Funny kind of neo-Nazi with a Jewish president and all, they aren’t doing it right. Or are we discussing the benefits of National Socialism if we can manage to keep the racial theories of Hitler out of it? You know don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
There is no question the Azovites are a neo-nazi organization. That Zelensky is Jewish is rather beside the point; Zelensky is a puppet; he was elected on the premise that he would enact the Minsk agreement, but was then pressured by the neo nazis in the government to double down on the attacks against the Donbas. So, he’s either a liar or a puppet, your choice; but he was certainly elected under a false promise.
The issue is that the eastern Ukrainians would rather fight and risk dying than be ruled by the west; and if it’s “ok” for the US and NATO to support the western Ukrainians in their 8 YEARS of aggression, it should be perfectly ok for the Russians to support the Donbas.
Hitler was a Catholic Fuhrer too. Zelensky knows he would be assassinated if he went against the neo-nazis and they are, in a sense, fighting for the dictator.
Zelensky made a statement that when the Russians abandoned some of their positions around Kiev, that they were going to go in and get the traitors and sympathizers? There’s your “shot in the back of the head” poor civilians.
I don’t know for sure who did that without a real investigation, which can’t happen while a war is still going on. If one side stops killing people perhaps the other will too. Only one way to find out.
Or Ukraine agrees to Russia’s very reasonable original demands that our own country would be making under the same circumstances. Only difference being is that our country would have flattened Ukraine by now with the help of multiple other countries that were threatened or bribed to join in on that flattening. While our jingoistic morons, including you, danced in the streets chanting USA! USA!
Well that isn’t happening Russia needs to abide by the treaty it signed in 1999
We needed to abide by our promises to not expand NATO beyond a reunified Germany.
You got paperwork on that?
Look it up yourself – readily available
We also shouldn’t instigate, plan, fund, and aid the overthrow of the last legal democratically elected government of Ukraine, when all the eligible voters had a say so in who won.
Well, true to a point; but he was elected by voters in western Ukraine, not by those in Crimea and the Donbas, who either didn’t vote because they were fighting for independence or because they were cowed from going to the polls by the neo-nazi elements (who have used violence as a tactic, beginning with the Maidan revolt). So, let him rule in western Ukraine, and let the Donbas and Crimea go their own way. The Russians seem willing to allow this.
NATO, NATO, NATO… A bit of sick and twisted logic…
“There are countries within NATO who want the war to continue,” Cavusoglu told CNN Turk. “They want Russia to become weaker.”
The understatement of all understatements. And they don’t care how many Ukrainians die to achieve that goal.
Just like they didn’t care how many Afghans died during the 1980s to achieve their goals. They traded 1.8 million Afghan lives that weren’t theirs to trade in order to help bring down the Soviet Union. Without any regrets, according to Carter’s national security adviser at the time.
Well DUH. Of course that’s true; the US government and media wants nothing more than for this war to continue for months and months; Biden wants this to be an election issue in November, to show America how he “stands for freedom”; the fact that there is no scenario where Russia DOESN’T fully occupy the entire Donbass, and the land bridge to Crimea, AND the entire seacoast between them, doesn’t matter to these war mongering tools; as long as they keep getting to go on cable news, spouting their “military knowledge” and “theories”, they are more than happy to let the Ukrainians bleed themselves white. Meanwhile, the Eastern European NATO members will take every opportunity to get more and more military aid and upgraded hardware from the US for free, sparing themselves the expense they never intended to make at our cost; a financial bonanza for them. They could care less about Ukrainians dying either.
Years and years. It is meant to be the new normal — firm DC control of alliances, arms sales, and the world economy.
Erdogan is sore because the West has lost interest in perpetuating the war in Syria. There is not much to be gained for Turkey in Ukraine in terms of territorial acquisitions. They won’t get back Crimea. The Turks can still exploit the difference between the West, Russia and China to expand their own sphere of influence, but the role of peacemaker is probably too big for them.
What Cavusoglu is saying is just a lame copy of what the antiwar crowd in the West has been saying all along. Anyways, good of him to say it publicly considering that Turkey is a Nato member.
The war was provoked by the US refusal to do diplomacy. This is just the same course, continued.
The US expected a smaller war against Ukraine while hoping for all of these sanctions, to firm up US control of its alliances and the world economy. It has not gone as planned, but more of the plan is the intention.
Yes, of course the US has no desire to end this. That is why and how the US started this.
This war was entirely avoidable, by the same means it could be ended. The US is the one that refused both to avoid it and now to end it.
Nice folks. Hopefully the Ukrainians will read this. For sure it’ll give them such a warm feeling. Who wouldn’t want to join a club like that.
Ukraine takes the prize for suckers of the century.
Other nations ought to look at Ukraine, and see what could happen to them if their destruction served US policy goals.
Yes Joe Biden wants the Ukraine war to last longer than his life span.
Only a foolish analysis will conclude that this war will end soon. Most probably NATO will not take the risk of providing Ukraine the nukes, but will provide all other weapons to keep the military industry working at full speed. As for Russia a defeat will prompt the excuse of evistential threat. And it is there that things will go crazy for Ukraine and the countries pouring weapons to Kiev. Only God knows what will happen in 2022. Anyway sanctions, famines, corruption, bunkers, depopulation: all these agendas are on high alert, reinforced by the fear of Covid variants. Populations cannot think. Daily survival is taking all their energy. Will soldiers sacrifice themselves. No… they would prefer to use sophisticated weapons. Civilians will pay for colateral damage. The NWO will rejoice in their bunkers when this apocalyptic event will take place as prophesied in the Bible. This End Days scenario is imminent. However there is hope.Matthew 24:22 “And unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days shall be cut short. ..”
