On Monday, the State Department signaled that the US is discouraging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from making concessions to Russia in negotiations that are aimed at ending the fighting in Ukraine.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said Zelensky has “made it very clear that he is open to a diplomatic solution that does not compromise the core principles at the heart of the Kremlin’s war against Ukraine.”
When asked to elaborate on his point, Price said that the war is “bigger” than Russia and Ukraine. “The key point is that there are principles that are at stake here that have universal applicability everywhere,” he said.
Price said Russian President Vladimir Putin was trying to violate “core principles,” including “the principle that each and every country has a sovereign right to determine its own foreign policy, has a sovereign right to determine for itself with whom it will choose to associate in terms of its alliances, its partnerships, and what orientation it wishes to direct its gaze.”
Putin has made clear that one of his main motivations for the invasion is Ukraine’s alignment with NATO. Leading up to the invasion, he asked the US for a guarantee that Ukraine won’t ever join the military alliance, but the US refused to make the promise even though President Biden publicly admitted Kyiv wouldn’t be granted a membership anytime soon.
Even Zelensky has said that he was told Ukraine wouldn’t be a NATO member. “I requested them personally to say directly that we are going to accept you into NATO in a year or two or five, just say it directly and clearly, or just say no,” he said in an interview with CNN on Sunday. “And the response was very clear, you’re not going to be a NATO member, but publicly, the doors will remain open.”
Instead of pushing Zelensky to declare neutrality, the US continues to arm Ukraine. When asked if the US is counseling Zelensky on the negotiations with Russia, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that the US is in touch with Ukrainian officials every day. But she said the role the US can play the most “effectively” in the process is to send more weapons into the warzone.
“The role that we feel we can play most effectively is by continuing to provide a broad range of security assistance, military assistance to them as well as economic and humanitarian assistance to strengthen their hand in these negotiations,” Psaki told reporters. Last week, President Biden announced a new $800 million weapons package for Ukraine, which includes shoulder-fired anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles and armed drones.
The US is also leading a Western sanctions campaign against Russia that Psaki and Price said helps Ukraine’s leverage in the talks with Russia. Last week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russia stopping its invasion wouldn’t be enough for the sanctions to be lifted. He told NPR that it would take an “irreversible” Russian troop withdrawal for Moscow to receive sanctions relief.
Ukrainian and Russian officials have been holding intense negotiations via video link, which continued on Monday. Zelensky and other officials have made it clear that they are willing to discuss neutrality, although they do want security guarantees from the West.
When it comes to Russia’s other demands, the Ukrainians are more stubborn. Russia wants Ukraine to recognize Crimea as Russian and recognize the independence of the Donbas republics. An aide to Zelensky told Politico on Monday that a deal on neutrality would be “easy,” but any talk of Ukraine giving up territory is “not going to go anywhere.”
As Mencken said “every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under” …
This though, this is just evil now … I mean, come on! Really? Each country has a right to determine its own foreign policy and alliances? After all these decades? After Guatemala, after Iran, after Vietnam, after Chile, the Central American bloodbaths, after Iraq and Libya, and after the 2014 coup in Ukraine?
And for this nonprinciple, Ukrainians must continue to die? Did the press corps have to wash themselves in boiling water to try to clean up after that press conference?
Indeed. Every Cold War don, Henry Kissinger and all the other strategists, warned against expanding NATO eastward, saying Russia could not accept a future where they are encircled. But they were ignored by the neocon, the media owners, and politicians financed by arms suppliers.
Russia remembers what happened to Serbia. Bombed to bits, which Biden bragged about being in charge of, to hand over Kosovo to the illegal aliens from Albanian that Serbia had started to expel after the UCK guerilla started murdering civilians and burning churches. Russia remembers how a “color revolution” overthrew democracy in Georgia, with the military there quadrupled and trained by the CIA and Mossad, the president bragging about his and his wife’s shopping sprees in Washington while visiting the White House, then invading Russian South Ossetia during the Olympics.
Ukraine is Europe’s most corrupt country. Zelensky was a comedian financed by the top oligarch to be his puppet. An eager henchman for Washington. Of course Russia will not let them aim NATO missiles at Moscow, from half the distance between Cuba and Washington. We know what Kennedy did to prevent the Cuban missiles.
The Ukranian people are not that stupid. When this is over, they will realize how the US government, for the umpteenth time, has used another nation as a battering ram in its war agenda! They will see how US leaders corrupted the Ukranian government and overthrew a democratically elected President who just happened to be “too friendly” with the Russians. The USA always talks about spreading “freedom and democracy”, but its actions do just the opposite!
Talking about evil empire.
When American support the peace package, after finished weapons,
Normalisation of people kept dying is succeed and war is normalisation if murdering people stack with us,
Then go ahead , move to Russia, but there you would not be able to read this or comment on it. This is what Ukrainans are figthing for, and it’s not you or Bidens decision that counts now, it is Ukrainas.
Have you checked the media? Even the “progressive” media is on board for “rescuing” Ukraine and head to head war with Russia. We are lied to consistently by all. Propagandists they are………..for war.
I guess it depends on what you mean by “progressive.” Most of the publications I read that use that self-description are 100% against military intervention and mostly against sanctions, etc., although some of them are for aid to Ukraine.
ukraine is an independent european country, like norway where i am from, such as poland, finland. Their speaks as if Russia owns Ukraine. Have you checked the media? Do you want to be subjected to Putin and thrown in jail and tortured for criticizing?
Ah, mamma, don’t be that way!
I just don’t understand why you people think Ukraina should trow it self under Putin. I think you guys don’t understand. I am so tired of Putins stupid terror and manipulations that I would rather get nuked then Nato not to stop him. If I was alone with him in a room I would just run and attack him. I think you guys should take a trip to Russia, and Ukraine , I not say this to be rude, I just don’t, think you really understand. I used to be neutral , but after his tsjtsjenia propaganda puppet pm s actions, not so much. Do you know what Putins plans ?
Well, I’d rather I and the other 7 billion + of us on this earth, not “get nuked” for the sake of “principles” that the west does not apply to itself over Ukraine. So if Ukraine needs to comply with unreasonable security demands from Russia, that’s just the way of the world. Ask the Central American countries about US’s attacks and interference in their countries sometime.
Let me ask you something: are you this exercised over the Saudi/UAE/USUK attacks on Yemen that have killed hundreds of thousands of civilians? Are you ready to be “nuked” for the sake of Yemeni kids?
I was about Syria. Because I am european I can relate to this. Half the population has migrated.
Love it or leave it. How 60’s redneck of you.
I remember that, Wars! 😆
😎
“freedom” might be what individual ukranian people’s are fighting for but that is not what their US puppet govt masters have in mind for them
What do they have in mind for them?
‘Universal principles’ eh? Maybe they should change the name from NATO to PLATO? https://media2.giphy.com/media/lYhiKN9BgU0eyYlaOE/giphy-downsized-medium.gif
There are realities to consider, not principles, US organized, sponsored and paid for a coup in Ukraine that resulted in a Nazi forces getting imbedded into armed forces. The human rights situation againsst minorities was critical,
We are losing sight of the bigger picture.
If we need refresher, reading Chinese Glibal Times is instrumental.
War was provoked by US undermining security in Europe. The ssme formula was used by Clinton to prevent peace settlement brokered by
EU in Balkans. Chinese is NOT neutral. Neither are over 100 countries that refuse to implement ssnctions.
All of them are not condemning Russia, But every country wants to help Ukrainian people that are the victims of the war. US policy makers are incapable of subtlety, Humanitarian aid is necessary.
NATO exansiin is still the issue, not just Ukraine. Weapons placed in member countries after German reunification are still the problem.
And the Nazism has been ignored by US and Europe. At home, the glibalist media acccuses our conservative populatiom of Nazism and supremacism. While in Ukraine, real Nazism has made a comeback in force, and we pretennd no to see what has
been happening for the last eight years. In Mariupol a town with majority Russian population a Nazi Azov brigades are the defenders!
Russia tried to negotiate to let the population go, but the
Nazi guards would not let them leave.
Ukraine is blaiming Russia! Russia is not comenting, that csn wait. This provocstion of Russia’s memories of millions civilians dead — is dangerous. We ard playing on fears Russia still did did not recover from.. We have deliberstly pushed that button by letting Nazis holld several Russia majority towns being st their mercy.
This has become a major topic
globally. China published one among many TV programs in which the anchor went in a rant how Himmler was right in advising killing Russian children, as if you leave children they will grkw up and hate you. He was forced to alloligize as the world saw it. During “appology”, another anchor, a woman laughed hysterically. Workd will not give this a pass anymore.
President of Turkey said that the abuse of Russian
populatiom will be a stain on Ukraine for yesrs tk come,
Indian press is full of doubts that Eurolean club, Western relugion, can ever accept others as equals. Urging India to get out of AUKUS. The hatred that Europe has against Orthodox Christianity is not new. Look at US News and World Report caricatures Putin. With a cross. Knowing full well what it means. His mother secretly baptized him during communist rule, and he stl wears.
If I know anything about history, Mariupol
will never again be psrt of Ukaine if Lviv cintinues to control Kiev.
This is a reason I think that slow and deliberate process iscounting on Kiev stalling.
At least they are open that Ukraine is a US puppet state. This revelation will if course pass over the heads of the serfs of our corporate media and if such an obvious interpretation is made it willbe dismissed as Russian propaganda as surely as Nulands effective admission of sinister stuff being held at Ukrainian biolabs was swept into the same bin.
A Washington puppet state. Ordinary Americans just watch the news and believe what they are told, most of them, but let’s not say the US did this. The cabal in Washington and in the top media is very specific. It’ wasn’t “the US” that got paid $50,000 a month by Ukraine’s Burisma after the coup, it was Hunter Biden.
May sound picky, but I think it’s an important distinction.
Research shows that when the grassroots want one thing from a party and top lobbies and donors want another, the latter nearly always win.
Peter Finch in “Network”……….less than 3% of Americans read. All “information” comes through the TV. (It was $85,000 per month).
This is a big problem. I meet Americans all the time and they’re mostly normal rational souls and yet their government is one sick and evil puppy. How to reconcile? My theory is the nation is just too big, All that negotiation just brings corruption.
After a couple of days 25% of the people wants nato vs Russia even if it means nuclear showdown(I m quoting from memory so I might be a bit off). When I used to read 20% of people in usa think Baraka Obama is a secret Muslim I genuinely believed it’s just headline grabbing shady statistical manipulation now I know better. So atleast 1/5of the population can be easily manipulated or genuinely stupid and that’s is enough to give momentum to any well organized… (in Dumbo bush’s words) evildoers
The No Fly Zone question was another scary poll. 38% were in favor of one even if it started WW3.
“the US is in touch with Ukrainian officials every day.” Which is why Zelensky isn’t making any real concessions. Not to mention if he does, he gets the “75-Cent Solution”, as Scott Ritter says: a neo-Nazi puts a 9mm in his brain.
“75-Cent Solution”
$7.50 if it were a Pentagon bullet.
😆
You got that right!
And the blame is placed on Russia.
And the run of American ‘journalists’ somehow shot while on the Ukrainian front-line does kind of flag a little disappointment from the home team about the lack of a No-Fly Zone… Personally I think a better move would be immediate capitulation – that would really annoy Washington, plus save Ukraine from getting any smaller…
Of course Ned Price is right, but it is the PRINCIPLES, that Russia is, and has been for at least fifteen years, trying to enforce at an international level to give it some rights to its security which are supposed to be inalienable. NATO is supposed to be defensive, and has decided that Russia is an enemy that must have no rights to defense at all. What possible real reason can NATO give for expanding, for taking in so many disparate nations? For filling them with weapons? For throwing out the government of Ukraine in 2014 and providing it with huge training, weapon stocks, support for the Azov battalion that nobody can deny are fascistic for the last 8 years? Look online for stories of the Donbass, Ukraine for the last 8 years- there is no pretence that Ukraine is a free, independent, democratic, peaceful nation, even in BBC, CNN, DW etc programs over all these years.
There is scant mention in the media about the 14,000 killed in the Donbas by the Kiev government in the last 8 years. Scant. As if it didn’t exist.
It deems the USA decides what is allowed to exist and what is not.
Did someone hear a phone? I called this at least two weeks ago, that The West™ (ie, the US) wasn’t going to LET Zelensky surrender or otherwise make a deal with Russia. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, if Zelensky goes off-script and does indeed make a deal the US isn’t party to, he’ll quickly find himself going the way of Hussein or Gaddafi- we’ll be glad to have Bad Guys in charge of our puppet nations, as long as they’re OUR Bad Guys. But when they do things on their own, they instantly get put on The List and we know what happens to those people. I had the opinion of Zelensky that he was simply acting stupid in not making a deal with the Russians to stave off the destruction of his country but at this point, he’s a pitiable figure- just another pawn of The West™ who has to toe the line or he gets it in the neck.
Zelensky is also investigated for fraud, I think in Hungary or Czechia, one of those countries. He prefers to stay president.
Much like Daniel Ortega imprisoned all the top opposition leaders in Nicaragua and banned the other parties from campaigning before the election, controlling the election completely, because if he ever loses the presidency he’ll be prosecuted for the 300 students that were arrested and then “disappeared” after protests in the past.
No he did it so when he wins the POPULAR MANDATE west doesn’t declare one of these puppets the legitimate president and hand over all the foreign reserves and try to instigate coups. The man won popular mandate before, overseen by outside observers and things haven’t changed much to have the public turn on him just because west targeted him and didn’t send election observers.
If the opposition was popular they would’ve won with a goat as it’s leader
And we will defend those ‘core principles’ to the last Ukrainian.
🤣🤣

Who the f*** is Ned Price to talk about “Principles”? 😆
Sounds like the Neocons are in control in Washington, diplomacy is dead, Bombs Away.
https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2022/03/22/why-the-west-hates-putin/
Why the West Hates Putin.
That first paragraph is a bit much.
I don’t have a problem with a policy encouraging all Ukrainians to fight to the death, and supporting them with small arms as long as they are willing to fight. But we must recognize they will lose. Russia will ultimately use nuclear weapons, which is fine with me because they will be forced to utterly destroy their Ukrainian prize in order to conquer it. Ukraine’s farmland will be radioactive and/or poisoned with Novichok, and nearly worthless. Ukraine’s population will all be dead. Putin will get his prize, but it won’t be worth much.
No one will use nuclear weapons. Period.
“Putin will get his prize, but it won’t be worth much.”
But it will be neutral.
No war is about principle but every war is about power.
https://patternofhistory.wordpress.com/
HarHar. Until Hungary or Poland insist on THEIR Sovereignty
Classic “fight until the last Ukrainian” position… Ordinary Ukrainians are those who suffer the most while obstinate politicians pile up the body count while they hide in their bunkers.
So under this principle, Ukraine should tell the US to f_ck off instead of allowing the US gov’t the power of determining which terms it has to make, while Ukrainians are being killed and forced from their country. The US gov’t has now admitted they are at ar and willing to sacrifice humans.

It must finally be starting to sink in that Zelensky’s refusal to accept independence for the Donbass region is becoming irrelevant. When Mariupol falls, the borders sought by the separatists will be established, whether or not he agrees to yield Ukraine’s claims to the region. Even his handlers must be wondering if Kyiv will suffer the same fate as Mariupol.
The U.S. will fight the war in Ukraine until the last Ukrainian…
As we should.
I suspect when the monetary damages and death in Ukraine become too great, Russia will launch nuclear missiles into relatively desolate sections of America.
Those events alone would collapse US economy and financial markets while minimizing deaths that might otherwise be meant for Washington, DC.
Unfortunately, I suspect events would snowball from the US military. No viable solutions, really. It’s about saving your own populace, ultimately.
Of course they won’t fire nuclear missiles.
My country (the USA) sucks.
It’s the establishment in Washington and the top media, not the U.S.
But it’s the voters who vote in the establishment in Washington.
I hope so…
I agree, LB.
My husband and I are talking Mexico.
You are wise….
It all comes down to MONEY…! Free Fall Profit for MIC…!
Chilean author and filmmaker Gonzalo Lira lives in Kharkiv. He’s interviewed by ex-UK MP George Galloway. Worth viewing as Lira explains the overall situation in Ukraine from his personal perspective inside Ukraine.
FULL INTERVIEW: Under shot and shell our man in Kharkiv #Gonzalo Lira is on the money
The NYT has been doing some halfway decent reporting about actual military facts.
https://archive.ph/ou9Vj
Russia flies 200+ sorties a day, while Ukraine flies 5-10 with old MiGs.
Russia’s surface-to-air missiles can reach anywhere in Ukraine. They have almost taken out the last of Ukrainian air defenses. They took out important command and communication centers in the first days. Zelensky’s forces are losing their radar and warning systems.
When a base in western Ukraine was hit, killing dozens, there was no alarm sounding. (That’s the base that also housed foreign Rambos, who then made videos about what fools they have been. But the Ukrainians won’t allow them to leave once they’ve signed papers.)
Expanding strikes to western Ukraine is an obvious move, part of the Russian strategy to cut off the Ukrainian military. Ukrainians still use old Soviet bases, so Russians only have to look at the old maps. The missiles that hit the training base, fired from ships in the Black Sea, also struck a location used to repair the last MiG fighter jets. They have also hit airports in central and western Ukraine.
“Russians haven’t taken the biggest cities!” we constantly hear as war propaganda. Why fight street to street, and then have to run the cities, when you can just cut them off? Zelensky has tried and failed to push out from Kiev with infantry. All he can do is abolish democracy and media in the city.
Keep in mind the bulk of Ukrainian forces are holed up in the east. The Russians have encircled them and no supplies reach them. Now it’s just about waiting for them to run out of fuel and ammo. The invasion army Zelensky amassed to invade anti-coup Donbass takes no initiatives. They were not prepared to fight like this.
Ukrainian tactics in all cities have been to withdraw from the outskirts and fire missiles and artillery from among civilians. The Russians, after being reluctant in the beginning, have started hitting the cities, so naturally the NYT and others accuse them of targeting civilians. They get no credit for having accepted a slower initial advance by avoiding hitting urban targets.
A video of Biden is going viral in China. Biden boasted about being the first to propose destroying Serbia’s capital Belgrade.
https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/resurfaced-clip-biden-boasting-he-proposed-natos-78-day-airstrikes-belgrade-goes-viral
“I suggested bombing of Belgrade. I suggested that American pilots go there and destroy all bridges on the Drina. … I was suggesting very specific action.”
-Joseph Biden
China says it will never forget who bombed their embassy in Belgrade, after they had protested the war.
“Despite the seemingly extensive target vetting, on May 7 the Chinese embassy in Belgrade was struck by five Joint Directed Attack Munition satellite-guided bombs, delivered by U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit bombers. Three Chinese journalists—Shao Yunhuan of Xinhua, and Xu Xinghu and his wife Zhu Ying of the Guangming Daily—were killed in the attack. Twenty other Chinese nationals were injured, five seriously.”
The NATO bombing of Serbia killed 2,500 people. It was focused on completely destroying their economy. They froze and starved in the winter. Cities that surrendered to Washington received fuel.
From these cities security guards were sent in civilian clothing as “protesters” to attack President Milosevic’s home, grab him and hand him over to the U.S. He was tried for “war crimes in Bosnia,” and put in a small, cold cell, which caused his death. After his death he was freed of all charges. He had very clearly opposed Radovan Karadzic’s war crimes in Bosnia and then cut off ties with him.
Russia will remember how Washington can always come up with a reason, and always funds “civilians” who “spontaneously protest”. Like Vice Prez Biden’s henchwoman Victoria Nuland bragged about doing in 2014 in Ukraine. She is running Ukraine policy under Biden once again.
The phrase ‘criminally insane’ comes to mind when you delete all of the mumbo jumbo and just observe what these idiots are doing, as if they were complete strangers.
Well, well. All principles were explained by a TV anchor on Ukrainian mainstream channel.
The age old problem that Catholic Galicia had with Christian Orthodox population. Get rid of them. Thst region was Hitler’s ally and helped exterminate Jews and Orthodox Ukrainians and Russians.
So the anchor said that Himmler was right. The key is to mill Russian children so they will not grow up and want revenge. This sentiment is not new. It was there ever since Soviet Union pursued Hitler retreating from Ukrainian front and crushed his Galician alies. While in power, Galician Nazis exterminated Russians and other minorities, but also Poles, as they saw their future state in Europe to be bigger. Many willl be surprised to hear that Lviv was a Polish town once.
With Hitler, their dreams were crushed. Being then alllored to Siviet Union was a disaster .
But not for long. West threw them a lifeline. They were reinvented first as anti-communists, then anti-Soviets and finally — when it became acceptable — anti-Russians. A smooth transition funded and lionized by the West.
But now they hold us hostages — we brought them to power un Kyev, the heart of Orthodox Christianity.
Now, they can flaunt their Nazi background, show how THEY, the Nazis won! Their flags, insignia of batalions that foght alingside Hitler — all proudly displayec! And who would try to stop them? A Russian soeaking Jewish comedian, with a Russian wife! He was put un his place day one. His ife dependent on Western protection, and allowing Lvov Nazi battalions to do what they want,
We are now their hostage, and have placed our bets on their brutality — to “defend” predominantly Russian populated cities from — Russians!
We see their grizzly deeds in Mariupol — a city hostage to desperate Nazi brigades. People are fleeing — but to Russia, for safety. Yes, all the brutality wil be known.
Truth will out.
There are other towns to rescue from their Nazi overseers. And the longer Ukraine stalls — it will be costlier. Russia will probably connect forces accross Zhitomir and Vinnitsia. Without any need to enter Kyev. Bu separating it from Lvov, there will be no need for it,
The war will not end for as long as there is no some sort of separation from Lviv.
Yesterdday Turkish president said that the treatment if Russian people in Ukraine will remain a stain on
Ukraine’s future for long time to come,
For Russia, this is an existential issue of its survival, and the reaction up to now has proved Russia is correct to fear the future. NATO is obsolete, has no need to pretend it is defensive as its belligerence and cruelty are obvious. The USA hates even the suggestion of peace anywhere. Russia and China, plus most countries not allied to the USA, prefer peace, as the people (if asked in the USA), also need and want.
This is progress… This video was ostensibly uploaded from the Azov Battalion itself. It was targeted with TOS-1 thermobaric weapons. I predicted that as soon as the Azov isolated themselves from the civilians that Russia would bring out the big guns.
Russian army destroy the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol (Ukraine war)
Ukraine is the last piece in the game of Risk we have been playing since 1991. We are going to complete the noose around Russia if it takes the last dead Ukraine citizen.
Um, when you have foreign troops surrounding your capitol and making inroads into your country the war isn’t going to end without negotiations. And concessions are going to be a part of that. I mean I’m not going over into lala lala land here, am I?
