Baghdad Twin Suicide Bombing Kills at Least 32

ISIS took credit for the attack, the first major suicide bombing in Iraq since 2018

At least 32 people were killed, and 110 were wounded in a twin suicide bombing at a crowded market in Baghdad’s Tayaran Square on Thursday morning, Iraq’s Health Ministry said.

An Iraqi official told Al Jazeera that one perpetrator lured a crowd towards him by feigning illness and then detonated explosives. The second bomber struck after more people gathered to help victims of the first blast.

With such a high casualty rate, Iraq officials expect the death toll to rise. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack early on Friday, according to the group’s Telegram channel.

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said in a statement that the attack on civilians “confirms the continuation of our war against terrorism and that there is no retreat in the fight to eliminate its remnants in every inch of Iraq.”

Thursday’s attack was the first major suicide bombing in Baghdad since 2018, when 27 people were killed in a similar incident, also in Tayaran Square.
