Friday October 7, 2011 marks the ten year anniversary of the United States invasion of Afghanistan, considered by many as the nation’s longest war. To date, it has cost some $460 billion.
Hundreds of thousands of US troops have been sent to Afghanistan, many on multiple tours, nearly 1,700 of them are dead, tens of thousands are wounded, and at least 20 percent of them have mental health problems. No organization or governmental body bothers to tally the total number of Afghan civilians killed directly from the war, but it’s known to be in the tens of thousands, not including millions displaced.
What anyone has gained from all this loss, is not clear. Currently, Obama’s strategy is to continue an extensive, brutal military occupation of the country until at least 2014, although reports continue to surface that US presence will continue for many years after that. Afghanistan’s government, headed by the top American choice Hamid Karzai, is one of the most corrupt in the world and continues to benefit from mountains of US aid.
Reports of widespread torture in government-controlled Afghan prisons has not prompted action from the Obama administration.
Local militias throughout the country are being funded, armed, and trained by the US despite being responsible for grave violations of basic human rights. The militias, mainly the thuggish Afghan Local Police, get off scott free because of their connections to corrupt powerful individuals in government.
Night raids, one of the central strategies in Obama’s war, have increased many-fold, fuel resentment, and undermine US troops. An estimated 12 to 20 night raids now occur per night, resulting in thousands of detentions per year, many of whom are non-combatants. Senior commanders in the Joint Special Operations Command claim these raids get the wrong person 50 percent of the time. As one man from Nangarhar said in a recent interview “They claim to be against terrorists, but what they are doing is terrorism. It spreads terror. It creates more violence.”
One of the principle effects of the Afghan war has been to push militants over the border into Pakistan, prompting the US to unleash a deadly drone war along the border that has killed hundreds of children and many more hundreds of civilians total. It has also led to the proliferation of cross border kill/capture missions by the US, further destabilizing the country and damaging an already precarious alliance.
Nothing tangible has been gained from any of this. By most accounts, the war has only exacerbated the terrorist threat facing America by fueling hatred and fundamentalism. When ninety-two percent of Afghans have never even heard of 9/11, the war is viewed as an unprovoked abuse. The memory, for example, of the family – including pregnant women and children – murdered during a house raid by US troops, will reappear in the future as blowback.
In fact, the war was intended to be directly against US interests. Al Qaeda, who planned to draw America into a long and costly war there, aimed to bleed the empire dry, believing they accomplished just that with the Soviets.
The feeble attempt to withdraw troops was primarily symbolic and political and was met with a violent insurgent response so as to make clear the US would not leave with peace and security. The point was well received, with military commanders conceding that foreign presence will remain for the foreseeable future.
President Obama will not give a speech marking this anniversary. His public focus, with the 2012 campaign in full swing, is decidedly about domestic issues and jobs for the American people. He understands that Afghans don’t vote in American elections. Six in ten Americans, according to recent polling, say the United States should not be involved in Afghanistan, but as is usual, they will vote themselves jobs and benefits.
At this rate Obama's daughters will soon be old enough to be sent to Afghanistan to continue daddy's murderous, open-ended war – but of course they won't go. By Obama and Bush's reasoning only suckers get killed and maimed and The Banksters dance on their graves…
41 US soldiers died in Afghanistan in September 2011. 5 US soldiers died last Wednesday in Kandahar reported in three separate news releases at defense.gov.
This is the outcome of illegal war. War brings nothing but destruction and killings.
Naturally we have gained deaths and desruction of american and world economy. The people are more dieing of hunger. etc. This is the outcome of a super power which is drunk in military might with no shame or excuse to kill innocent Irakis ,Afghanis and pakistanis.
Happy (?) Afghaniscam 10 Year Anniversary everybody. Be a great day to throw a 'quagmire' party. Tommy Ricks? How's it all look to you this fine day? Mountains of dead innocents, thousands of maimed service boys and girls, national treasure squandered, and oh yeah Amerika is still in the middle of it. Ten freaking years later and the insanity only escalates exponentially.
Quagmire Party!! Is there Jell-O wresling??
“To date, it has cost some $460 billion.”
Yearly cost of US military, including interest on military share of National Debt, is $1.4 trillion. So, if we never had an Iraq or Afghan War, if ten years ago we put our military in moth balls, we would not have a $14 trillion National Debt.
Actually, if we now sold off all our military hardware and privatized to the highest bidder all our 800 military bases worldwide, all that priceless real estate with choice harbors and ultra modern airports, we could pay off our National Debt and have a $5 trillion surplus.
Oh – but – Corporate America sure has made a lot of profits on the war during these past 10 years – haven't they?
While the Taliban had control of Afghanistan – they offered to surrender Osama bin Laden to be tried in a World Court – George W. Bush rejected their offer.
The 9/11 terrorists all took their flight training in the US under the watchful eyes of the FBI, NSA, and CIA.
Afghanistan has always been known as 'the graveyard of soldiers and of empires".
Yesterday's 'freedom fighters' against the Russian invaders are now today's 'insurgents' against the American / NATO invaders.
It is 1984 – isn't it?
Before the Talibans Sudan offered Bin Laden to Bill Clinton he said "not interested".
Waddya mean, nothing gained?
The banksters, contractors, and crooked politicians have gained BILLIONS, and will continue to do so, as long as our phony wars continue.
We need to get the hell out of EVERYWHERE we're not wanted and needed, and start minding our own business.
To say that America has gained nothing after 10 years adventurism in Afghanistan is incorrect. Here's what we have gained:
1. A crippling economy where Congress refuses to reallocate the Billions of dollars being wasted in Afghanistan to a better use here in our own country. They want to build schools and hospitals there while ours crumble around our ears.
2. Speaking of crippling…We have gained thousands of military service people who are now maimed and disfigured for life – for those who managed to not be sent home in a flag-draped box. And the promise that their injuries would be taken care of for life are as hollow as the idea that they are fighting for our freedoms.
3. We have gained the animus of the Muslim world in which we ply our trade of wanton killing and destruction with little regard for noncombatants – which are generally chalked up to "stuff happens." There is no amount of "humanitarian aid" that will ever offset what the USG has done in our names in their world. And the reasons, when asked for, are legion and all over the map – which basically boil down to little of substance.
4. So, saying we have gained nothing is not exactly true. We have gained little of value and much that is negative. And all for a couple of hundred religious fanatics. Doesn't make much sense, does it?
Nothing gained? I'm willing to bet that Blackwater, Halliburton, Triple Canopy, et al beg to differ on that assessment.
Nothing was done except an illegal war and occupation. They killed and used tortureto scare civilians that were guilty of nothing. What they gained is money illegaly through the military industrial complex for the top 1 persent well destroying America for all others.Everyone involved thats alive that ever broak the constitution witch is the law should be jailed.Obam should be impeached right now and have no chance a a secound term.Ron Paul should be president and laws should be made that if you stay at all from the constitution at the very least you lose your job and never get another government job.And the peop[le that break laws that people elected should be punnished worse than others for lieing top the country they are supposed to represent. These laws need to be put in place along with dual citizens not being able to be in office or any government job.Israelise hold top many top jobs in the government and there loyalty is to Israel and congress allows it there loyal;ty is to money.Look into Ron Pauls face and record and you will see a man that can not be bought a real patriot. The only real American president since JFK.
Well said Jamie! Amen to that.
