At Least 50 Killed in Heavy Fighting Around Yemen’s Maarib

Saudi-backed forces attack areas west of Maarib

Backed by Saudi airstrikes, the Yemeni government pushed into the western districts near the city of Maarib over the weekend, engaging in intense fighting that left at least 50 killed, and dozens of others wounded.

As is often the case, the government’s statement claimed the overwhelming majority of casualties were Houthis, with “more than 44” Houthis killed, and only six soldiers killed on their side.

The Houthis have not confirmed the casualties, but reported at least 17 Saudi airstrikes in the Sirwah District. They did not elaborate beyond that on what was hit or who was killed.

The Saudis have been intensely attacking the outskirts of Maarib, the last government-controlled city in northern Yemen, in recent weeks, trying to remove the Houthis from the immediate routes into the city, and force the fighting further away.
