Though President-elect Barack Obama’s office said it has yet to receive official confirmation, confidants of Senator Hillary Clinton report that she has decided to give up her Senate seat and will accept the offer to assume the role of Secretary of State when Obama takes office in January.
The move comes after the two engaged in a particularly rancorous battle for the Democratic Party Presidential nomination, and is just the latest in a series of surprisingly hawkish cabinet appointees for Obama.
Senator Clinton voted in favor of the Iraq War and was harshly critical of then-Senator Obama for expressing his willingness to meet with the leaders of nations which don’t have favorable relations with the US, labeling his position “irresponsible and naive.” Despite the conflict between the two, their foreign policy advisers insist that the two hold very similar views on security issues.
