China Definitely Hasn't Invaded Pakistan, Insists China | Pakistan likewise denies invasion has occurred

The Chinese military’s invasion of Pakistan has been greatly exaggerated. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu today denied the reports of an invasion, insisting the reports were “totally groundless.” Pakistan has likewise denied the claim.

The report of the 11,000 strong Chinese invasion of the border region of Gilgit-Baltistan emerged last week in an opinion piece in the New York Times, and gained an enormous amount of currency in the Indian media.

India’s External Affairs Ministry announced earlier his week that they were investigating the media reports and that it would be “a matter of serious concern” if it turned out the Chinese military had invaded and occupied the territory.

The ability of such a rumor of a Chinese occupation to float around for nearly a week before formal denial is primarily because the Pakistani government has severely limited media access to the area, as a way to keep their own Kashmiri separatist movement as quiet as possible.

Pakistan Reels as Bombings Continue | Over 100 casualties in latest attacks

Well over 100 casualties were reported today as Pakistan was rocked by multiple bombing attacks, the latest flurry of strikes in several months of attacks against sites since Pakistan invaded South Waziristan.

The biggest attack was against a military hospital in Muzaffarabad. The bomber detonated at the gates of the hospital, killing at least 10 people and wounding 81 others.

Another blast in Karachi was somewhat mysterious, as officials claimed it was a result of a gas-blockage, while witnesses say it involved a remote explosive. The attack left 31 wounded, and led to clashes between locals and the police.

Other bombings were reported, including the assassination of a political administrator in Pakistani Kashmir. It seems the attacks in the nation are far from over.

Kashmir Separatist Slams Pakistani Taliban | Says killing innocents cannot be tolerated

Syed Ali Geelani, the leader of a hardline faction in India’s Kashmiri separatist movement, today condemned the Taliban militants in neighboring Pakistan. Citing in particular Thursday’s bombings, Geelani said the attacks “are forbidden in Islam as innocents are killed.”

Geelani suggested that the “Taliban leadership needs to give up violence and adopt peaceful means to get their demands addressed,” warning that innocent casualties cannot be tolerated.

Geelani’s status as a high profile member of the Kashmiri separatist movement puts him in a unique position with Pakistan’s more conservative and Islamist factions, upon which the Taliban groups rely for support. However his reluctance to publicly condemn terrorist attacks in Kashmir leaves his decision to publicly castigate the Taliban somewhat perplexing.

Pakistani forces seal off an LeT camp in Kashmir

Pakistani forces raided a camp being used by Lashkar-e Taiba (LeT) in the Pakistani-held portion of Kashmir today. Details of the raid were unclear as the military sealed off the entire area, but an official for a local charity with LeT ties said the forces have taken over the camp.

The LeT has been publicly blamed by multiple parties for last month’s Mumbai attacks which killed over 170 people. Their responsibility has been given considerable credence in spite of the fact that they publicly condemned the attacks while they were going on and denied any link to anyone involved in them.

The Pakistani government has been under increasing pressure from both long-time rival India and the United States to act quickly against those accused of perpetrating one of the largest terror attacks in Indian history. Pakistan has repeatedly refused to hand over suspects to the Indian government, citing lack of evidence. The Pakistani military has yet to comment on the raid.

Though hardly an unfamiliar role for them, Muslim residents of the Indian portion of the disputed Kashmir region find themselves once again at the center of worsening relations between the neighboring nuclear powers.

This time, the tension is coming as the Indian government points the finger at Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a group whose primary mission is Kashmiri separatism, for last week’s Mumbai terror attacks. The allegations come as a result of claims made by the only gunman captured in the multi-day standoff, and seems to have growing credence in spite of the fact that the LeT publicly condemned the attacks when they were still going on.

Pro-India political groups in Kashmir have urged the Indian government to exercise restraint and avoid engaging in “punitive measures” against Pakistan, while Kashmir’s separatist factions publicly deplore last week’s attacks and hope, perhaps beyond hope, that the outrage over the violence doesn’t spill over into public sentiment to crack down on their movement.

In a move that has riled up some members of India’s opposition parties, Barack Obama linked the tensions in Indian Kashmir with Pakistan’s clashes with militants along its border with Afghanistan, and suggested that “we should probably try to facilitate a better understanding between Pakistan and India and try to resolve the Kashmir crisis.”

A spokesman for India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the Obama comments as “an unwarranted interference in India’s internal affairs.” The Indian government is attempting to downplay the statement however, with official sources saying it “could be pre-election rhetoric and needs to be ignored.”

India’s government has faced growing difficulties in containing separatist sentiments in the Muslim majority state, with police regularly resorting to violence to quell protests. The state government collapsed in July, and the national government has declined to set a date for new elections. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said he opposes external militant groups taking part in Kashmir violence, but he believes the Kashmiris are justified in using force to expel Indian forces from Kashmir.
