The military contractor who’s name has become synonymous with some of the ugliest chapters in the war in Iraq has decided that it would be best to change its name. The Iraqi government has informed the US embassy today that it will decline to renew Blackwater Worldwide’s license to operate in the nation. This will require the security contractors, still being used by the State Department, to leave the nation once the joint US-Iraq committee finishes drawing up its formal guidelines for contractors.

President-elect Barack Obama will face the decision of whether or not to renew Blackwater Worldwide’s contract to provide security for the State Department in Iraq when it expires in the spring, but if a State Department advisory panel has anything to say about it, they will be in the market for a replacement.
