In the wake of an attack on the protest city of Slovyansk, Ukrainian interim Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia suggested that not only was Ukraine not being deterred by the threat of Russian intervention to protect the protesters, but is actually planning to “confront Russia” militarily.
“The Ukrainian people and Ukrainian army are ready to do this,” insisted Deshchytisa, saying the military was ready to fight Russia the moment it crosses into the protester-held region along the border.
Russia has had troops along the border for weeks now, and the 40,000 troops there are likely sufficient, in practical terms, to rout the whole of Ukraine’s poorly equipped military if it came down to it. Russia seems to be seeking to emphasize the troops’ proximity, but has so far ignored calls from the protesters to intervene to protect them, while insisting that they reserve the right to do so.
Ukraine, for its part, seems to be tired of waiting, and has given Russia a 48 hour ultimatum to “explain” its military exercises near the border, and with Deshchytsia talking up the nation’s readiness for a full-scale war against Russia, they seem to be daring Russia to invade at this point.
Ukrainian officials gave no indication what would happen at the end of the 48 hours, but have emphasized claims of US military backing for the offensive against eastern protesters, which they dubbed an “anti-terrorism” operation.

A key lesson from the start of WW 1 is how an alliance between a world power and weak country is extremely dangerous. The weaker country tends to act like the little brother of the neighborhood bully. Constantly starting confrontations, and then always either threatening others that big brother will come take care of them, or actually relying on big brother to step in and end the fights they've foolishly begun.
Germany had this problem with the weak and collapsing Austrian-Hungarian empire, and it resulted in a local dispute over who controlled Serbia and the assassination of the archduke to expand into World War that ended up with the destruction of the Europe the Victorians knew.
If there was any wisdom, someone from the US would be delivering the message that if Ukraine fights Russia, they do it on their own. Most likely, little brother would back off in a hurry when big brother says he won't fight. But, the superpower always seems to foolishly see small advantageous in the alliance with the weak power, and makes the mistake of backing up little brother and ending up in a fight that's well beyond the capabilities of a bully to win.
I suspect that if the US "pushed" the Ukrainians into an armed conflict with the Russians, by the time the US could scrape together a large enough force to make a difference, the Russians would be having tea and vodka in Maidan while the "coup" Ukrainian government makes hasty tracks for western Europe (Ukrainian treasury, comprised of the $xxxM the US has foolishly given them in pocket.)
I'm assuming they wouldn't be able coerce the EU/NATO to provide troops, except Cameron, to fight against Russia. Most of Europe understands what a land war in their neighborhood would do. But even if they could, it would most likely be all over by the time marching orders were organized. Emergency logistics can be a real b*tch sometimes.
Your saying the right thing for the wrong historical reason. It was actually Tsarist Russia that had the problem with troublesome little Serbia. They supported terrorism to undermine Austria-Hungary. They were at least indirectly involved in the assassination of the Archduke and his wife. They then appealed to 'big brother' Russia to protect them. Had Russia made it perfectly clear to the Serbian government in Belgrade that they were completely on their own, with no prospect of help from them, undoubtedly they would have acceeded to Vienna's terms, however humiliating they may have been. The foolish Tsar would have avoided a war, saved millions of lives, his dynasty, his family and his own life too. The Tsar SHOULD have been the most war-averse ruler in Europe. He alone had the example of 1905-06 when Japan defeated him and revolution nearly swept him from his throne. That SHOULD have been a big warning to him to avoid conflict at all cost.
The US/UK/Zionist psychopaths are apparently in the process of opening another killing field far away from their own countries on the other side of the globe and let the locals do the killings, same as we see happening in the ME. Kiev needs a war and the interventions following it. They're already bankrupt and their debts are even worse now with the loans from EU and IMF since these have strict conditions on reform attached. Reforms which Kiev cannot afford politically. They are fully aware what will happen when all the further assessments will be made about the state of their economy and what the people in the street would do (at the very least start hating the new power block). This is why war seems increasingly like the only way out for the political class in Kiev. Or at least use it as grand bargaining chip in their negotiations with their new creditors.
Russia however knows that Ukraine minus Crimea and the East (or with a semi-independent East) will have zero chance to repair their economy and sign up for the EU. Stale mate? Or is Kiev waiting for some Gulf of Tonkin incident with sufficient civilian causalities to get the thing going? Desperate bankrupt governments are the most dangerous in the world. Actually no. The Finns lost the winter war. True, they put up a very valiant resistance, but they didn't "beat off the Soviet forces". They held them off for a while, but they ultimately lost. Don't forget those same Soviet forces essentially crushed Nazi Germany, a far more dangerous foe then Finland.
